I sent an email to some of you and now Phred has asked that I make a post so here it is. Here is his original thread
http://petoftheday.com/talk/showthread.php?t=92770&highlight=extremely+urgent+prayers+phred

I talked with him last nite and quite honestly he sounded pretty ickky.
He was pretty short of breath and his feet are swollen and he hasn't slept more then 2-3 hours since he has been home from the hospital. He finally expressed seriousness to his doctor and he had some tests today. As suspected, he is showing signs of Congestive Heart Failure.
congestive heart failure

NOUN:

A condition marked by weakness, edema, and shortness of breath that is caused by the inability of the heart to maintain adequate blood circulation in the peripheral tissues and the lungs.

He went into the hospital this afternoon according to his friend Jason against his will. He will be there a couple days while they run more tests. He is going to have a Nuclear Scan tomorrow to see if he has a blood clot in his lungs.
He is resting comfortably and is in the best place he could be right now.
He is here.....
St Elizabeth Health Center
(330) 746-7211
1044 Belmont Ave
Youngstown, OH 44504

The fur kids are at Pat and Joan's. And for those of you who have his cell phone number he has that with him also.
I will update more when I know more....

EDITED TO Add:
I JUST TALKED WITH HIM.
Granted it lasted all of 2 minutes if that but he gave me the info for the hospital.
his room is 6416A -
direct line is 330-480-6416

Yikes! That's terrible! I spoke to him before Christmas and he sounded pretty bad. I'm so worried about him. I'm glad the doc fit him in for an appointment. He's where he should be. I'll try calling him tomorrow. Thanks for the uppity date. I'll be praying very hard for that sweet soul.

I didn't realize Phred had heart failure, I thought he had a blockage. I had a friend at work with heart failure, he had it for years and it was controlled. I am glad Phred is getting the help he needs, my mother had heart failure and it took me forever to get her to go to the doctor and by then it was too late, its not something to be ignored.

Prayers to you Phred, we don't really know each other but I enjoy your posts so much. Big hugs sent your way.

This is a new onset condition just 'came about' since his procedure.

It's a good thing that he doesn't have to worry about his furkids.

Staci I am so glad he is in the hospital and getting care. As I mentioned in my e-mail it sounded a little like CHF to me as my mom suffers from that. They will probably start him right away on diuretics to stop the swelling and there are medications nowadays to help. My brother's MIL lived a long time with CHF so it is treatable. Now we just have to get Phred to listen to the docs and obey. Prayers going up for this very special man. Please do keep us posted.

He will certainly be in our prayers. I was wondering last night if he had developed asthma, as one of my freinds did after a heart attack. I am glad he is in the hospital, though I know he doesn't want to be there, and he can get the medical attention he needs.

I hope Mr. Bear got to go with him!

I am so sorry to hear that our Phred is in the hospital at all. But on the other hand, if he has this condition, I would much rather have him IN the hospital where he can be monitored and helped.

Staci, thank you so much for keeping us informed of what is going on. Please don't feel you are alone in this - all of us will do anything we can for our dear friend, Phred.

And one of those things is to pray really hard that he is soon home with his critters and feeling better and this condition is under control.

I am so sorry to hear that our Phred is in the hospital at all. But on the other hand, if he has this condition, I would much rather have him IN the hospital where he can be monitored and helped.

Ditto. I'm in shock! As I was reading through some posts today I was thinking how there haven't been many from Phred lately and I was wondering how he was doing. Was going to make a post asking when I got done going through all of them, but sadly I find that my post is unneccessary. :(

I will most definitely be hoping and praying that all goes well. As serious as it is, I'm glad they were able to find a reason for his continuing to feel bad.

Phred, don't be a stubborn old man - you're too young for that! Stay in the hospital as long as they tell you to, and do anything and everything they tell you too so you are home in no time with Cinder, Smokey and Bowser!

Wonder if they have internet service in the hospital and if anyone can get a laptop to him? At least it would be something for him to do between tests instead of watching daytime TV.....

All right Phred! <<hands on hips>> it is time for some tough love!

A few years back my father did the same thing....waited until his ankles were too swollen to walk before he decided something was wrong.

So....Just stay in the hospital while they get you straightened away... then... listen up...and I mean to the health care providers! Listen to what they have to say about taking your medications, getting exercise, eating right, and discontinuing any bad habits (if you know what I mean!) But at the same time...do not let them bully you. If you thinks something "isn't right"....insist they look at it and explain it to you.

You have too many important things to do so...... get well!

My thoughts are with you....

I just spoke with Phred and can report that the e-cards are coming through. (I think he really enjoys getting them so if you haven't sent one yet, please do so.) I wish I would have thought to read him all the messages from this thread :o but like all good ideas they sometimes come to me too late. He has had a few tests (emphasis on few) but little time with the doctors and no real feedback on what, if anything they are finding. He had a visitor there, so I didn't want to take up too much time. He says he believes he will be there for a couple days, but again it is hard to tell when he is not getting much information.

Against my better judgement I tried when I was leaving work at 1130. He was supposed to call and leave me a message but being a patient he's just too busy! (I can say that I work in a hospital!) the phone in his room is shut off from 930 to 8am so I tried his cell he was really tired and kept hitting buttons on the phone so I lost connection and had to call back. He is to have a stress test tomorrow. Hasn't heard much from the docs. So he doesn't really know what is going on. I imagine he will be in thru the weekend at least. He's on a low flow of Oxygen also.
He said to tell everyone he's alive and at least kicking - but he wasn't sure about the well part. ;)
The ecards are not delivered over the weekend just to let you know..

Staci, thanks for the update. I still am glad that he is in the hospital so that they can monitor him and be there in case there is any urgent need.

I bet his mood isn't the greatest either............I would be very antsy to find out what is going on and what can they do for him.

I know that Cinder and Smoke have that prayer line wide open and all of our prayers are going straight to the BOSS.

I talked with him a few minutes as I was headed to work - he doesn't know much still. Is too have a test on his kidneys tomorrow. I don't know why or what, I don't think HE knows. His roomate that came in last nite past away and he got rehomed temporarily b/c of the family coming and going and being distraught. He's not sure when he will be discharged.
He sounded pretty chipper tho. I told him a few people were trying to call him from PT and he was sorry he missed the calls.

I just spoke to Phred, they delivered a bunch of e-cards today, which must have been from yesterday I guess, it was the second bunch. He's still waiting for some decisions and results from two different teams of doctors, the heart guys and the kidney guys. There's some procedure scheduled for Monday, but he didn't know what time.

He thanks everyone for their prayers, wishes he could post himself, wishes he had more pep, and can't wait to feel better and be home.

The dogs are getting spoiled by friends, and Boots, who is guarding the homefront, is getting used to the friends coming and going, and has even allowed himself to be petted.

I just sent the following to Phred in an e-card:

Message 2...

Phred, I wanted to pass along some information on what I've learned during my frequent hospital stays:

1. Doctors are frustrating. I've spend many days lying in my hospital bed wondering about my tests results, when the heck I'd be sprung and what was wrong with me! Doctors aparently live in on their own timeclocks. While its not fair, at least you know it isn't you...your doctor and your illness are normal, your doctor just went to a course entitled, "How to Keep Your Patient Waiting - And Other Tips on Keeping the Doctor/Patient Relationship Stimulating" ;)

2. The nurses always keep a supply of jello, pudding, chicken broth and soda in their station for patients. BUT, did you know you can have your nurse call down to the caferteria and have them make ANYTHING you want?? Seriously!! They'll do it! Anything your heart desires, they'll make you. If it helps you feel better, they'll do it. Yay for food!

3. If you get cold, ask for blankies that come from the heated thingy. They come all toasty warm, its so nice!!

4. Most hospitals have volunteer programs where they bring animals to patients to cheer them up!! Ask your nurse...or charge nurse if you get a blank stare. Pups always make a hospital visit better. :)

5. If you're sick of the TV, the volunteers can bring you the newspaper, a book or magazines. If you feel like talking, they have special volunteers for that too.

6. If you need some prayer time, to work out fear, frustrations, etc. Ask your nurse for the prayer line and for the chaplan. That has always helped me. The chaplans are amazing in calming you. They can bring you a bible and/or other relevent literature.

7. Go for walks. I know I said this before, but it really does help...it gets you up and you tend to meet other patients. I've met very nice people being a patient. :)

OK, that's enough for now. :) Get better soon, Phred. We miss you!!

Hugs,
Kelly (NoahsMommy)

Karen, thanks so much for the update on Phred. I know that all of us are very worried about him. But I still feel better knowing he is in the hospital and not at home, at least for now.

I just spoke with Phred and while I'm sure he wouldn't like me saying so here, he sounds kind of down. :(

Please keep him in your prayers, thoughts and keep those e-cards coming. Even if you just put in there that you're praying for him. As a patient getting those amazing cards from you, it helped me SOOO much to get out of that hospital funk where you're sad and upset at being there.

They really do make you feel special, that people who can't be there physically are there emotionally and are thinking of you, throughout their own lives.

Please keep sending them, or calling our Phred.

Thanks, guys. :)

Thanks for the update, Karen. I check this thread frequently to see if anyone has spoken with him, as I'm sure others do too. It seems at least that they are trying to be thorough and come to some conclusions before formulating a treatment plan for him.

I just got off the phone with Phred.

He sounded better than the last time I talked to him (Friday night) but still didn't sound "normal."

He's scheduled for surgery at 8.30am tomorrow and someone (either himself or one of his firebuddies) is to try and get ahold of Staci. I told him that if he didn't call me tomorrow, I'd try to get ahold of him on Tuesday after I got off of work. (Didn't know if he'd feel much like talking tomorrow.)

We were talking about his crew...
One of the nurses suggested that we (not sure who "we" consisted of) should try sneaking a dog in (I assume she meant his dogs); there's no formal pet-therapy program in place at the hospital.

I wonder if Pat and Joan would be willing to load his crew up and take them to the hospital? (Cinder and Smoke used to visit their grandmom in the nursing home, so they'd almost assuredly be ok. Bowser might be a bit more of a challenge.) I don't feel right asking them; moreover, I don't have any contact information for them. Ah well, a nice thought perhaps.

Extra prayers on the way tonight/tomorrow, Phred!!

I got off the phone with a very discouraged Phred about a half hour ago. The surgery is postponed b/c the kidney doctor wants to work on the kidney first. There is a bloodclot in his kidney- that they need to fix first then do the cath.
He said his heart doc sounded pretty proud of himself that he called the kidney doc at 10pm last nite on a Sunday nite. He got off the phone b/c one of the doctors was coming in.
For those of you who have his cell phone don't use that - the nurses are really **tching at him for using it so use this...
his room is 6416A -
direct line is 330-480-6416
Keep the toes, fingers, claws, paws, and tails crossed for him. And send up many prayers. He really needs it.

The surgery that he was supposed to have today wasn't kidney related - it was supposed to be another cardiac cath. But the kidney specialist wants to fix the kidney problem first.
At least that's what I am understanding. I know 'medical talk' for the most part but some of it's over my head!

Slick you are going in the right direction for removal of the blood clot, but there are now drugs that will dissolve clots. Unfortunately it usually takes about 24 hours and then other work can't be done for another 24 hours (because of an increased risk of bleeding). So unfortunately Phred is likely going to be twiddling his thumbs for another few days...

Karen
01-09-2006, 02:09 PM
He's in the "waiting for something to happen stage" - says to tell everyone he'll let us know when something's gonna happen - he's gonna go bug the nurses now. They're going to do a catheterization for the clot removal, he's just not been told when.

So he said to tell you all not to worry, he's heard this procedure tomorrow isn't that bad, and he'll let us know how it goes somehow.

As we were speaking someone walked in the room, and I heard that person say "Pet Talk," then Phred explained that was the guy delivering more e-cards! :) He really appreciates them.

Yeah, right...like that's going to happen. All I ever think about these days is Phred so had to stop work for a moment and check in. Thanks so much for the update Karen.

Hmmm, 11'ish would be about 9'ish Pacific Time I think. Is he 2 or 3 hours ahead of me? More prayers on the way.

He's East Coast Slick, same as I. Three hours diff from you. Unless of course someone happens to be in one of those Daylight Savings/non-Daylight savings situations. Then you can cross the street and been in a different time zone  Not in this case though, he and I (Karen & Paul too) just basic 3 hours earlier than you

He's 3 ahead of you, Slick, because he's 1 ahead of me. He's on Eastern time.

Karen, thanks so much for the uppydate. Sounds like he is being kept busy with all the e-cards and phone calls so hopefully time isn't dragging by too much, although I know it would mean the world to him if his friends could sneak Cinder & Smokey in, and maybe even the Bowser boy. Is it the Cardiac Catheterization he is having? There's some info about that on the site Karen posted. Click on Patient Preop info, then on the male body, and you can either read about the procedure or see a video clip.

No, it's his kidney they are catheterizing today. They have to wait until his kidneys are all set before they can do the angioplasty for his heart.

Still thinking of ya Phred. :)

I'm not sure if it's the same with all doctors but if they told him it's a relatively painless procedure, then it probably is.

They told Andy AFTER his surgery that the kind he endured was a very painful one. They didn't tell him before hand because they didn't want him to freak out.

Phred is out of surgery, but up in Intensive Care. I just spoke to his nurse, and she said he was put in Intensive Care because his blood pressure was up a bit too high during the procedure, but by the time he actually got TO Intensive Care it was fine. He's fine and resting.

I said "He's got a big crowd" and she broke in to say (not unpleasantly) that she knows, and thinks they've all called in separately. I explained that not everyone has called, as we stretch from Canada to Calfornia to Argentina and Australia, but that perhaps by posting, I'll have forestalled more calls to her!

I know when I had my surgery, the difference in how I felt from the day of surgery to just 24 hours later was like night and day. Here's hoping that the same is true for Phred and he is up and at 'em today and patiently waiting for the next procedure.

Hang in there, Phred. One down one to go, then hopefully you'll be on the road to recovery for good!

A big THANK YOU to all of you who have been calling. I guess I've been hesitant to call knowing others are, and thinking how busy a hospital is, I just don't want to make more work for anyone there. Although from your reports the staff all seem to be very pleasant and happy to keep us updated.

Just finished my conversation with him, told him about your post, Gini, and he admitted that it IS an individual's prerogative, so he guesses people can worry if they want ...

I got a call from Phred around noon - and just got off the phone with him.
He wants everyone to know he is alive and kicking just not very hard. ;)
First off he says he never was on a ventilator he was on a non- rebreather mask so that makes it a bit less scary. During the procedure to removed the blood clot from the kidney he went into heart failure where his lungs filled up with fluid and according to him he started coughing his fool head off. (his words not mine!!) The doc was irritated but the procedure went off ok - he was in the recovery room still coughing with no doc around to write an order for lasix.
He appreciates all the cards and calls he is sorry he hasn't been able to talk to anyone yet.
He is scheduled for the cath on Monday.
Honestly he sounds 110% better then he did a week and half ago before he went into the hospital.
Keep the prayers and thoughts and calls and cards coming! :)
