:D ok like I said I am not very good in telling breeds, but I do know dogs that are in the sporting group because that is the only kind of breeds my parents go for. There is a dog that has been coming around for months! beutiful young boy, so sweet, not very well mannered but i think he's young. He hasn't had a collar which got me worried untill today, so I know he has a home, but he has no id tag. I think he is a australion cattle dog or mix, but I am curious and need you herding expertise!!! ;) SO here he is. he and my dogs are so interested in metting, but I am nervous so I won't let them meet unless i meet the owner.

He's beautiful. I would say PUREBRED ACD. I really don't see any Border Collie, there's too much white.

It's not unusual for a border collies to have a lot of white.
Have you ever seen Bandit, the border collie on Little House on The Prairie? He is almost all white with some black patches.

Actually, it is unusual. It is very rare.

Most Border Collies that come out with more white than another colour have a good chance of being blind or deaf.

I've actually met quite a few Border collies with more white than any other color, and, the ones I met weren't handicapped in any way.

The dog is gorgeous, regardless! He does look like he Australian Cattle dog, but, I won't even try to guess if he's a mix or what he's mixed with. ;) Pretty pooch, though!

that it completly untrue. mostly white BC is not even close to rare, and they are ONLY prone to health problems if it the result of a merle/merle breeding.

I'd also ahev to say he's an Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie mix.

If you want to meet the owner, you could send a note home with him.....tie it to his collar. Then maybe after you get to know the owner, you could suggest he/she put some ID on the collar in case he should get lost or injured and they need to be contacted.

Not an agruement. No worries!

Haha, If I were you I probably would have kept that dog as my own.. just because I feel sad when I see a dog by itself, even if it does know where it is. LOL

I just did a quick google search on prepredominantly white border collies, all of the sites said that they were rare. It surprises me since I've met several...but either way, it says that. 0_o

I am a member on a Border Collie Rescue group.. many predominantly white BC's wind up in shelters. (just from observation) There are quite a few whites in rescue, but I've never seen them in pictures of litters by reputable breeders.

Does the AKC recognize predominantly white Border Collies? I know the CKC doesn't even recognize the BORDER COLLIE.

Why?!

BC_MoM
12-27-2005, 08:49 PM
Why?!

The CKC does not recognize the border collie as it is bred for it's brain & ability rather than for a uniform appearance. CKC (like AKC) is all about physical standardization. This is why most breeds look so much alike while the BC can have so many shapes and forms. Once registered with the CKC or AKC, they have to set what a BC is supposed to look like, right down to oh so important things like how long its nose is in proportion to how wide its head is. To say nothing of height, coat length, colour and ear conformation. Because of course all these things are just soooooo important.

It was thanks to the tremendous effort by the Canadian Border Collie Association that this did not happen. This is why we don't have mass production of barbie collies in Canada (with a some unfortunate exceptions...who register their dogs in the US to get around this). It is also a major reason we don't have as many BCs per capita showing up in shelters.

Yeah, it bites.. I have no real desire to ever own a purebred with papers and professionally show. I just think that's boring.. I prefer just loving your dog for being who it is. It would be cool to own a purebred, but I think a mix is better. You can, in a sense, some weird way, own two 'purebreds' at once. ..... Or not... haha

people say that mostly white BCs are rare because they are not recignized, the one and only reason clubs like AKC dont recinize mostly white BCs is because they like to live in their own little world and believe that sheep wont take a mostly white dog seriously, this is something that shaphered thought a along long time ago, around the same time that they thought that in dogs that had one brown eye and one blue eye that the blue eye controls up close and the brown eye from a distance. in reality there, there is a line of top working border collies that are mostly white. but because of the previous though about whites not being taken seriously they were culled, which is why there are not nearly as many mostly whites as there is mostly colour, THAT is why a lot of places will say that mostly whits are rare. what you are thinking of about mostly whites being blind or deaf are lethal whites, these are born from merle/merle breedings. mostly white BCs that result from proper breeding are no differnt from coloured BCs
