What a lovely present! You two lead such an exciting life with all these little friends you meet! We'll probably get another boring toy that we don't like from Santa!

Enviously,

Samantha, Daisy and Jessica

Dear Eddie, now there is finally a friend who is neither a dragon to be slain nor a scaredy chipmunk to die from a heart attack. I hope he stays with you and HH for a long and happy time;)

BTW: what is a Russian tortoise? Something different from a SoCa tortoise a suppose- does it mean it escaped somewhere?

Hmmmm....somehow I always pictured turtle doves resembling more of their dove ancestry than their turtle history....but then again, that shows what I know about turtle doves. ;)

Wow! That's a really neat present, Eddie. Mr. Turtle looks like a really nice guy. What's his name? Does he eat your food? It will be nice for you to have another play mate. I never saw a real turtle before. Well, I hope that you and Lady Edwina have a very Meowie Christmas with lots of other nice presents and plenty of tasty treats. I hope you'll tell us more about your new friend and I hope he plays nicely with you.

Your friend,
Groucho

He'll be back! :)

Eddie, don't worry about him eating your food - he'll be much too slow. :D

When he comes back again, I bet you'll notice right away .... if you're allowed outside that is! ;)

Edwina, you know how to give him a warm welcome! :)

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on
the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old
tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park, told AFP.

"After it was swept and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist
added. "The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four years," he explained.
