They don't fit my lifestyle but I think they're good dogs. Poor breed, though, with all the health problems.

I'm also more partial to English Cockers. I like their personality better and I think they're cuter. No offence ;)

It's ok, everyone has there preference. English cockers are a bit bigger and more hyper, thats why I like american cockers.

It's sad for there health problems, I agree. Missy died for what we think was kidney failure. :( she was only 20 days from her 8th birthday. She died on the 4th of july :( :(

See, I like more active dogs. So they would suit me better.

Sorry to hear about your girl :(

Cockers really aren't my type of dog and like Sarah, I also prefer the English for the same reasons.

I love them. I have four. I don't have any pics. though. :( I have one of Alex on his page but thats it. I would rather have rottweilers or something though. They would suit me better. Even though rotties are better, i wouldn't give up my babies for every penny in the world. Alex, Tyler, and Buster are sable and white. Fanny is black and white. They are my life. Like in my signature:

Love my dogs, I'll love you
Corner my dogs, I'll corner YOU!

funny huh? ;)

My roan cocker spaniel is a year old. I love them; there's a breeder in our family that's where we found her. I love the American breed. Yours is such a cute little guy!

Pepper was an active Am. cocler. Very playfil and loved to run in her younger years. She didn't much like to play with toys though and only did so once in a while to please. She lived to 14 with only ear infections and dental problems (which wasn't her fault). I'd never buy from a breeder though. I had thought that their health problems from being overbred for so many years had been overcome, but then I hear from so many people that their cockers died young from problems. All of these people got their dogs from breeders. HMMM leads me to think that all the AKC breeders have poor quality, inbred dogs. Must be because they breed for colour and beauty. It's funny how the puppy mills and byb's have overcome the cocker health problems. My's grandfather's cocker was from a mill and it lived to be as old as Pepper. My uncle same story. Either its our family that only has the good cockers or it was the mills around here churning out good ones (by chance?). No breeder cockers for me though.

A well bred cocker is truly a wonderful dog, very loving and faithful even if they do have health problems, but if you end up with one with rage syndrome, it can be your worst nightmare. I have had both

I've never heard of a cocker getting rage syndrome. I though it was only a springer thing. Guess I learned something new. Too bad though. At least you are wise enough not to judge a breed from having one bad apple.

yes missy had 'rage syndrome' i think. she loved her family though, she just had major fear aggresion towards strangers. AKC breeders normally have good quality dogs. it's not true that byb's and puppy mills have over come health problems. missy died at 7 years old and she was from a byb. but its better to rescue anyway:)

Thanks Saphira and Snuggs! everyone sounds like they have cute pups!! Irescue452, sorry to hear about your baby.

Missy was likely just a shy or submissive dog, With Brody he could wake up from a nap 10' away from me and then run at me snarling and snapping, he would suddenly get aggressive simply because you were brushing him and attack. It is more commonly seen in red cockers but Brody was black, a lot of the problems with health etc stem back to when the cockers became very popular due to the coppertone commercials and they were being mass bred hoping to make a profit by people who had no interest in breeding for quality, the same happened with shepherds basically destroying the breed, most professional breeders have been importing GSD's from Germany to attempt to fix the damage and improve the breeding stock

oh, well, i didn't exactly know what rage syndrome was. Missy was a red cocker. But I am glad she didn't have rage syndrome. How did Brody get rage syndrome? Just from bad breeding?

It is more common in the english cocker and though no large studies have been done it is believed to be a inherited trait. The theories are: it is a form of epilepsy, a canine form of schizophrenia; low serotonin levels in the brain and thyroid dysfunction.

What are the symptoms of Rage Syndrome?

Sudden attacks for no apparent reason; the dog will often be sleeping and then attack without warning. The eyes become dilated and sometimes change colour during and after an attack, the dog is totally confused when attacking and will not respond to any attempts to stop it. The attacks are very unpredictable and the dog will often appear disorientated afterward and unaware of it's actions, then return to it's normal self shortly after. Victims are usually members of the family and due to the lack of warning from the dog, suffer from a flesh wound that will need medical attention.

Though medications are often tried and changes of diet, usually the end result is having the dog euthanized because there is no way to predict when or why the dog attacks. If a responsible breeder finds any pup does have rage syndrome the breeding line ends there, therefore there is less chance of ending of with a dog with rage syndrome through a breeder due to tracking of pedigrees, because they keep most or sell as show prospects and the must return policy on pets which allows them to know what is happening as far as health of their pups as they mature, but that is not necessarily the case with byb's and puppymills most wash their hands of the pups after their 30 day health guarantee, so they won't know if there are genetic or mental health problems in the litters they sell

We get cockers at work constantly --- several a day. They are very popular here. They are so not my kind of dog, but they are some of the cutest puppies and I love to watch a good cocker move. They are my very favourite dog to bathe at work because they are always the dirtiest and some of the smelliest -- their hair must trap dirt and grime because it gets so dirty, I love it! There's nothing like mud coming off a dog you wash. :p

My friend's Mum breeds Cockers and put alot of work and care into them, though I don't fully approve of all their breeding habits, most are good. I don't have any pictures of their cockers (eventhough they have over ten), but I have a picture of their Cockapoo, Brownie.

He looks a bit more Poodle than Cocker, though.

Oh... I'm sorry about that boxer_lover.

Chilli, do they breed cockers with other breeds? Is that why you don't approve? Brownie is very cute!!

Yeah, thats the main reason. I mean, if you want to buy a mutt, why not go to the pound?
