How big is your thanksgiving turkey? I was talking with my mom last night and she said she had to go and get the turkey in the sink so it could begin defrosting. I exclaimed, "This early? How big is it?" She said 23 lbs.

To me that's a big turkey. Mmmm leftovers! :D

I think mine is about 16 pounds, I bought it frozen on friday and I just let it hang out in the fridge to thaw.

If we get a lot of snow though I'll just stay home & cook something little. Some frozen turkey breast that I have which I am sure is 1lb or smaller. lol

My mom has always used the 'sit the turkey (still wrapped) in a sink of water' method for thawing a turkey. After awhile she puts it in the fridge.

For some reason, the cats have never messed with the turkey when it's in the sink. :D Such well behaved kitties. ;) :D

I don't know, I'm not eating it since I'm vegetarian. But my parents bought two since we're having Thanksgiving with my dad's entire side of the family this year. We used to always have Thanksgiving together but the past few years we haven't gotten together. Now, the tradition's back! :D

I just got a little 7+ pound turkey breast for me and hubby. I have no idea how much the turkeys will weigh that we'll be eating on Turkey Day. Considering that we have to rent out a elementary school cafeteria for one side of the family, I'd say there will be a few rather large turkeys at that gathering (no pun intended  )

Ours is 20 pounds! I had a coupon for the local grocery store that said if you bought $100 worth of groceries, you would receive a free 10 - 23 pound turkey. Well, I made the mistake of taking Bobcat with me. At first he questioned whether we could come up with $100 worth of groceries to buy. I pointed out that we needed stuffing, veggies, yams, etc. so it shouldn't be a problem. Well, the guy went crazy and started stocking up on can goods "just to make sure" we hit the $100 limit.

Then we went and looked for a turkey. The smallest one left was 20 pounds! Way more than we wanted. Then we went to check out.

How much did our FREE turkey cost? $242.00
Well, at least we're stocked up on can goods.

I got an 85lb turkey. JUST KIDDING well we actually got one that is around 20lb. We are going to be feeding alot of people so i think we will probably need more than that.

I got one that's 22 3/4 lbs, thinking that I was cooking for 4 or 5 and we'd have LOTS of leftovers....then more people called & said they'd come, so now I'm cooking for 12  --hope it's big enough!

Kuhio, LOL!! They run a similar promotion at the grocery store in my hometown. They give out 'Turkey Bucks' starting around October and how many Turkey Bucks you get depends on how much you spend per shopping trip. Then you add them all up and can use them towards a turkey. My mom almost always gets enough Turkey Bucks to get hers for free. :D

The standard "rule of thumb" is to allow 1/2 lb of uncooked turkey per person. Of course it would depend on how many side dishes are served as to whether everyone would be satiated with their turkey serving. Keep in mind they are not saying 1/2 turkey meat per person, they are allowing for bones and gizzards etc. I'll be cooking a small ham on the grill as well as the standard turkey dinner but usually end up with a fairly good sized bird because we LOVE the leftovers.

LOL!!

We aren't cooking turkey here, butI think my dad said last night he got a 14lb turkey. I don't know what size Ralph's sister got, but I'm guessing in the 20-25lb range.
