This is an old thread with an uppydate further down in the thread.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the reason I'm not around much is not because of my surgery - I'm doing great and am back to work as of yesterday. It's computer problems. I almost have my laptop back up to speed, but for some reason can't seem to import my emails back to the laptop from my backup.

Then at work the DSL has been acting up. It's been geeking out for awhile now, but is getting worse and worse. When I call SBC I get the old "if we come out it's going to cost you" routine along with the "the problem is not on our end" routine. However, after much investigation and experimentation and aggravation - emphasis on aggravation - I belive I've narrowed it down to our router. When I plug directly into the wall things seem to work fine and when I plug into the router things start acting geeky. Unfortunately our fax is on the same line, so I have to plug into the router and it's sooo frustrating. Sometimes I'm downloading at less than dial-up speeds!

All we need to do is buy a new router, but that means I need to convince my boss to spend money, which isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. ;) :)

So, in case you were wondering why I've been so scarce.......

*sigh* He should know that all that plugging in and out is going to cost more time and money than a new router probably. I am glad that we are in graphics industry- so at the office everything is fine but at home.......... :(

Have you tried REbooting the Router?

There was a discussion on http://www.windowsbbs.com (http://www.windowsbbs.com/)
a while ago about "flakeyness" on an office system ...
The final "fix" was to shut down; power off; and then reboot the router.

GLAD you're Feelin Better!! ;)

T+P,

If you think the router is the problem, try doing a firmware download and updating its firmware.

Thanks for the suggestions Phred and LH. To both of you, yep, been there, done that, still acts up. I've found the only way to get online now is to either reboot the router or disconnect it completely. When I reboot it works for awhile then starts geeking out so I have to do it all over again. So basically disconnecting it completely is the better option, but I can't do it for long because of the fax line and the fact that my computer is basically the server around here, so if I'm not connected to our LAN, my boss doesn't have access to much of anything, which means I can only disconnect completely when he's gone. (whew that was a long sentence!) ;)

LH, our router is old in technology terms, so there are no firmware updates for it. There was a driver update, but that was for connecting a printer to it - which I don't need to do. I think basically they're telling me it's time to buy a new one. ;) Which, I'm sure, wouldn't be a bad idea to get the latest & greatest in routers again..... I didn't mention it to the boss today while he was here because it was time to ask for two weeks off for Christmas, which is more important to me right now than a router, so I didn't want to push my luck - and I got the two weeks - wooo hooo!!! So tomorrow I put in for the router, and seeing as I'll be gone for two weeks and the boss won't want to deal with connectivity issues while I'm gone, I'm sure I'll get it. ;)

Debbie,

I hope you do get a new router at work. Somehow a problem has to
affect the boss himself, for him to understand the problem & fix it. :D

Why is your dept. not connected to a lan network?

Poor Boss ~
He prolly has No Clue that he's dealing with The FORCE on a daily basis. http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/tongue.gif

And Poor Terry ~
Wonder if he knows he's six steps behind when he wakes up every morning?

The best news that I have read on this thread is that you are doing great, Debbie.

Computer problems - one of my favorites - and I have only a thimble full of your knowledge.

Then at work the DSL has been acting up.

Go figure. Ever since I've been back from vacation, my DSL here at work has been working better/faster than ever, but now my fax line is acting up - they are on the same line. I guess my boss had trouble last week and they came and fixed it, now it's out again. I told the repairman that I don't care what he does to the line, just DO NOT mess with my DSL! They supposedly have 24 hours to fix it. We'll see.
