You are soooo loved Phred/John/Dad. That must help, at least I hope it does. Being loved by so many of these totally wonderful people *cough cough* that appreciate everything you have done and will continue to do must, and I hope will, give you strength. You are a precious gem among rough stones ;)

"Loved by Many" ...

Yuppers; you don't know how much that helps!!! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif

Furry Family, Pet Talk Family and Fire Family ... couldn't ask for more!
---------------------------------

Sunday 5:30 AM, ~6 hours after Sir Jury, still groggy ...
Open my eyes and see a tall shape in the doorway ...
"HI! How ya feeling!?"

Leave it to Brian to sneak his way into ICU! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/biggrin.gif He'd just said he was "Family".

12:45 PM ... Pat & Joan, Tracy & Deb, Jason & Amanda arrive and form up around
da bed ... Nurse Bobby has to *fight* his way in ...
He reminded the "mob" that visits were SUPPOSED to be limited to TWO "Family Members"
at a time ... I said I could only see two - what's da problem?
He <grinned> and told "the Family" that I HAD *perked up* since they arrived;
then pulled the curtain across to cover the doorway on his way out.
"Family" stayed till about 3pm when another nurse looked in and "suggested"
the Mob might want to "leave for a while".

And then there were the PT Phone Calls ...

SORRY, to ALL who called and never really "got through" http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif ...

Sometime on Saturday night I'd "X'd" a Contact Form - the THREE people the
Hospital would "talk to" about me ... Pat, Tracy, & my Sis were listed.
I didn't know they'd be almost http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif *rude* to everyone else! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

There were at least two or three Pet Talkers who "made" it to the ICU Desk phone ...
only to be "forgotten" between the Desk and my room! (All of 25 feet!) http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/mad.gif
I sorta remember hearing a few reports of "some lady" calling from a "Pet Place" ...

There were at least two "Lucky Ones" who got to Nurse Bobby - a really Nice Guy!
Johanna had a conversation with him that was immediately "reported" to me -
Bobby came in and said he'd had a long chat with "your friend from Cincy ...
Joe - JoeAnna - Joe?? ..."

How bout JoHANNA?
"Yeah! THAT's who she was! She sounded pretty worried,
I told her you were doin realy well!"

The other "Lucky Dawg" was Randi. - She got to Bobby, too.
He came in while the Fire Crowd was hiding inside the curtain ...
Bobby: "Scuse me; but I've got a Friend of yours on the phone -
says she's form DENMARK!
Anyone like to speak with her?"

I quickly filled Unka Pat in: "That's RANDI - a Pet Talker!
She really DOES live in Denkark! ... Please tell her I'm *OK*!"

Pat rushed out to do the honors and returned to pass Randi's Get Well Wishes!

Bobby later said THAT was a First for him - he'd never had an overseas caller
asking about an ICU patient before!

And Many THANKS to Miz Staci for taking the LATE-nite call from
Tracy & Pat on their way home after I'd been tucked into my ICU room!

I remember trying to tell Pat HOW to sign onto PT as "Cinder & Smoke" ...
then thought to suggest he might just CALL Staci and let her handle it ...

THANKS, Staci!! - You Did GOOD! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

Introducing ~

"Mr. Bear" ...

My Walking Coach and Traveling Companion >>>

http://petoftheday.com/talk/attachment.php?attachmentid=24925

Mr. Bear arrived with a Volunteer just before lunch on Tuesday ...
as I was *waiting* for the Doc to come and change my "orders" from
"confined to bed" http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif to "allowed to WALK".

The Volunteer only said I'd "Like It" and left with a Big <GRIN> on his face ...

"IT" was "Mr. Bear" - a Bear-Gram from The Vermont Teddy Bear Company!

He carried a Card that said:

Get Better Soon!
With big hugs & prayers from
Paul, Karen, Miss Hoppy
and All of Pet Talk

http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif
He's wearing a Checkered, Piped Bathrobe with a Sash and pocket,
removable Blue Slippers - with EYES,
has a Hankie on his right paw,
and a Chawklit Bar tied to his left paw, and the Bear Tail Story Book.

He's *NEAT* - THANKS, Gang!!! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/biggrin.gif

We shared Lunch and curled up on the bed together to *wait* for the Doc.
She never came, but two "Interns" arrived and said I was allowed to"walk" ...

Mr. Bear said he wanted to come along ...
so we bagan an afternoon of Hiking in the Halls.

After a couple "laps" up & down "MY" hall -- I asked the girl watching the
"radio pack telemetry monitors" if she could "see me" in the ICU ward?
She said she "thought she could" ... so Mr. Bear and I haeded off to visit with
Nurse Cindy (Gud Buddie & wifey of a Fire Guy) in my old ICU ward.

The ICU Gang had a good *laff* at our expense ...
Cindy said I looked like a *Dork* in my drafty "dressing" gown - WHY didn't I get a
pair of PANTS on? http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/tongue.gif
Bear and I left to requisition a pair of scrub bottoms!

My five cent:
I would prefer beer to chamomile tea all the time and if you go to your local drugstore you should find a bath that says "relaxing, calming down" or something. If you first have that bath- rather hot- plus a beer afterwards (I think 3 would be too much if the size is a pint :D) you should sleep rather well. :)

Make sure Mr. Bear gets a bed of his own or he'll have to go to hospital after Cinder and Smoke introduced themselves ;)

WHY was there no camera handy for the walk with da bear???

How are you feeling today?

Rachel
11-20-2005, 06:46 AM
I'm thinking that Bear no longer has his Chawklit Bar, and those fuzzy slippers are just the kind I'm imagining Dad wears. :D

Hope you are reading up on just what is the *good stuff* to eat. If you want to treat yourself, some pomegranite juice might even be better than that beer.

"I would prefer beer to chamomile tea all the time"

Yeah ... I forgot about the Chamomile Tea caper ...
Y'all "forgot to mention" that stuff TASTES like Yuck! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/eek.gif

Friday night I brewed a cup ... *smelled* like ???
Staci said I cooked it wrong - I Dunked & Heated in one step in the nuke box.
"Proper Method" = hot water First, THEN dunk da bag ...
First *sip* was an eye-opening experience!
By the Last *sip* I was convinced this was a cruel joke!

Dunno if it helped with sleep or not -
spent half the night runnin to the poddy getin rid of it!
Memo to Self: Smaller cup & start earlier!
Me thinkin the BEER might be the way to go!

"I'm thinking that Bear no longer has his Chawklit Bar, and
those fuzzy slippers are just the kind I'm imagining Dad wears."

Mr. Bear STILL has his Chawklit Bar! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/tongue.gif
Sadly, his BLUE Slippers with the EYES are too small for me ...
I eyed them up in the Hoppsbittle as replacements for the classy "slipper/sox"
(short, thin sox wiff "traction bars" on the soles) that I was issued.
Bear still has his Slippers with the *eyes*!

As for Mr. Bear and the Three Amigos ...

Mr. Bear is watchig over me from the relative safety of On Top of the puter monitor.
Kat did a *double-take* the first time he passed by; Bowser prolly can't see that far;
and Cinder & the SmokeMutt are playing it http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/cool.gif - showing no *interest*.
And there's a few Bear Dens available in High Places that da Kat can't get to!

But if <shudder> the WORST should happen ... The Bear Tail Flyer sez:
"If your Bear is ever injured,
even if the family dog gets a little too friendly with your Bear,
just call (1-800 #) for instructions on admitting your Bear to
our Vermont Teddy Bear Hospital.
We will repair the damage or replace your Bear at no charge.
Talk about a great healthcare plan!"
Wonder if I could slip into his robe & slippers and sneek into Bear General?

"WHY was there no camera handy for the Walk with da Bear???"

Thankfully, only Cindy's Big Kid has a camera/cell ...
She was betting I wouldn't *get out* on Tuesday ... and had promised ALL
her ICU Buddies she was bringing the camera/phone on Wednesday!
(Some photos should never be *snapped*!)

The "left" coast has been making calls to God often too. When I first got the phone message to call Zip - and it was about Phred - and she wanted to tell me in person - not leave a message - my own heart stopped a beat or two as well!

You've got lots of good nurses here who are giving you good advice, so I will leave any suggestions to them.

As for me, I am going to leave that line open to God and continue to ask Him to take good care of you.

So sorry that you got one of those "air conditioned" gowns - but probably everyone was looking at the bear anyway :D :D

You are well loved, Phred. I just wish that we could be expressing that under better circumstances.

Love, The Mom

Phred, I hope I didn't disturp the big get together in your room too much, but I had to know how you were doing before I went to bed. It was a pleasure to talk to Pat - a really nice guy! :)

Concerning the camomille tea, you might try putting a few teaspoons of sugar or honey in - makes it taste a LOT better! ;)

Still sending positive thoughts your way and keeping fingers and paws crossed!

Not allowed to drink chammomile tea because of my allergies, however, there's nothing to say you can't disguise the taste and yet have the same sleepy effects. If you got cinnamon sticks in the cupboard, throw one of those in when you poor the teabag in, and some honey. It'll taste much less like swamp water.

Oh Phred....this made me laugh out loud! It's true that chamomile tea isn't the greatest tasting drink in the world but I got used to the taste. Quite frankly, I don't drink much tea at all and I have found that a quick shot of brandy about 30 min before going to bed works wonders.....and it's not like beer that goes through you almost immediately. I had a friend once who used to say that he "rents" beer. :D

Now if that picture of Fister doesn't make you sleepy, I don't know what will. Nice to hear from you Phred and keeping fingers and paws crossed for a nappy time for you tonight.

I think sleepy time tea from celestail seasonings is better it's got some other stuff in it.

"Ahhhh, he is home at last"
"Awwwwwwwww, wot a cute bear"
"Ha ha ha ha h ..." - lavender :D

That's it
HUGS to you, gentle ones ............ and as the official BOUNCER on Thursdays ........ One Lite Beer please barman ...... and REMOVE the ashtray from Phred's bar area .......... he WON'T BE USING IT ANYMORE (will You, Phred????)

Introducing ~
He's wearing a Checkered, Piped Bathrobe with a Sash and pocket,
....Uuummmm....did Mr. Bear come with his very own descriptive catalog or is Dad amazingly up on describing bear wear? ;) :D

Glad to hear things are going well, Phred. Getting out and shopping is a good thing - I prefer "pink sugar" with my cammy tea. Celestial Seasons also makes one called Tension Tamer that is supposed to be relaxing with no caffeine. I don't know about that Klam Juize.....might want to have the amblance waiting in the driveway if you decide to try it though. ;)

As for the beer or brandy as Slick suggested, 11 years ago now my mom had a heart attack and had 5 bypasses. Having a dry hacking cough after bypass surgery is common (I guess) and the only thing she could find that would stop the coughing was whiskey. My mom maybe drinks a beer or two a year, so I was quite surprised when she told me she was drinking shots of brandy for her cough  but she said it was the only thing that helped and coughing was so painful she tried everything to stop it. Soooo....as long as the beer doesn't mess with your meds, I don't think one will hurt.

Which brings up another thing which most "heart patients" don't realize at first - if you do catch a cold, there are certain cold meds that you shouldn't take. I don't remember exactly what ingredient you need to look out for, but a pharmacist should be able to tell you.

Anyway, again, so glad to hear you're up and about and things are going well. Hoping and praying it stays that way! :)

Phred, thanks for posting a picture of Mr Bear.
If he ever gets tired of running around in his bathrobe and fuzzy slippers he can always get another outfit to wear from the Teddy Bear Co.
They even have a firefighter uniform that he can wear.
Have you looked at their website yet?

Tell Boots that Samantha was not happy when I brought my first bear home either.
I think because there are airholes in the box that cats are afraid that there might be another cat in there instead of a teddy bear. ;)

It sounds like you are feeling better now that you are home with your furkids again. :)

Awwwww, what a cute sleepy-pup!
Phred, you must be feeling well to keep up to all these PTer's comments! Bout that chamomille tea...I used to drink it "straight", the secret was to sip it, not guzzle it down. Really didn't taste so bad. Hey, how's Boots da kat at body massage, does he do that kneading thing kitty kats do? My kitty used to walk on my back (and my head) and knead it, always felt warm & relaxing -maybe you could make an appointmenst with Boots da masseuse before beddie-bye. ;)

Hope you had a good night's sleeperz last night, Phred. If I remember correctly you always have been somewhat of a night owl, so seems like getting your inner clock readjusted to that of regular folks may take a bit of time. Add to that a bit of WORRY and it upsets the whole ball game, even for the good sleepers like me. Nothing worse than waking up at 2:22 am when all the worries come out to play anyways.

Don't expect you're drinking any caffinated beverages like coke, coffee, or re
gular tea. They can wreak havoc with a good sleep too.

Anyway, keep us up dated on how things are going.

Not kickin very high - but functional.
Chased the Doc again yesterday ... squalked about the NO sleep problemo.
Doc's Secretary called back: "Take 50 mg Benadryl."

I've taken 25 mg Benadryl for bee stings (very alergic to them kritters!) and
one tablet knocks me out!
Took 25 mg last night ... sorta helped - I actually SLEPT in the BigBed for a few hours!

Down side is the effect last about 12 hours = sluggish all day.
Took another Beny about an hour ago ... starting to "fade" ... BigBed tyme soon!

Turkey Day?
I've had a couple offers - I asked that we just *skip it* this year -
I just do NOT feel like "socializing" right now!
Between what I suspect is a Hoppsbittle-sourced cold (little stuffed up + koffin)
and my general run-down / no energy condition - I'm happy just *chillin*
with the FurKids and stayin Home!

THANKS again for all the Kind Thoughts, Purrayers, and notes being sent my way!!

Dearest Phred,

When Staci texted me that night you were in ICU, I was worried sick. I had many horrible dreams... :( I went to church with grandma that morning and I prayed A LOT to God and asked Grandma too! I put you on the prayer request cards and have prayed and thought about you since.

I'm SO happy to see you home and on the mend. The sleep thing I can identify with...when you're a patient, your sleeping hours flip and you become somewhat nocturnal. Keep with the Benadryl at regular bed time hours and you'll be fine. :)

Just wanted to check up on you. I'm going to email you about some stuff, my dear. Keep on getting better.

Hey Phred, how're you doing these days? Haven't heard much from you over the holidays, and I really don't like the tone of your last post. Depression is common after an experience like yours, and I hate the idea that you might be suffering such a bout and not reaching out as much as you might otherwise. I hope some of your friends that live closer made sure you had company over the last few days.

Please check in and let us know how you're doing, even if you're feeling down so we can cheer you up.

I'm really not "depressed" - just uppyset that I don't feel "better" yet! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/frown.gif

Feeling "tired" is upsetting - but everyone keeps telling me it's "normal"
and will start to pass ... sooner would be better!

The local Fire Family has been "droppin by" evey day - bearing FOOD and company!
I've had "home cooked" for dinner every night - one more Turkey, mashed taters
and green beans in the fridge - and a promise from Unka Pat & Miz Joan of
"lots" more Turkey & Fixins just down the street!
Brian & Tami brought 3 months worth of breakfasts & snacks -
Tangerines, Pears, fruit & nut Trail Mix bars, and Brian's favorite -
Instant Oatmeals! (Oatmeal *looks GROSS* - but tastes GOOOD!!)

Today was almost HOT (55+) - so the FurKids & I took a bus trip to the BigLake Park.
We made two stops and took two "hikes" - prolly put in almost a mile!
Wasn't the "speediest" walk we ever took - but I lived through it! http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/wink.gif

Tomorrow is supposed to be 60+ ~ We'll go Hikin again even if it rains!

THANKS, Deb and ALL of you PTers, for all the "Worries" -
but try not to "worrry" too much -
I'm gonna be A-OK with a lil luck and a few more Purrayers.

It's REALLY nice to know I've got so many Good Friends!!

Take it easy. It will work in its own time - and unfortunately not any earlier ;)

Your food supply sounds purrfect. Enjoy it :)

Is there such a thing as a support group for folks recovering from heart problems? I bet there is. When I found myself in a "situation" years ago, I had the good sense to get advice and comments from folks who had already gone through the problem and then some current having the same problem. You might want to contact your local heart association group in your area. I know it sounds sorta silly to join a group, but believe me, it is great support! That could be why they call it a support group! It is especially great for someone living alone.

Glad to hear you are doing fine and have a good plan ahead.

Phred, it relieves me to know that you have such a good group around you to bring you good food. It isn't much fun when you are feeling tired to try to cook for yourself.

The walks sound excellent too - just don't try to overdo it.

You know you scared the daylights out of all of us so it relieves us when you stop by and post even a few lines.

From what I understand, God had to open a few more prayer lines for you - all of the others were busy busy busy - and He didn't want to miss any of the prayers being offered for you.

Good to hear everything is going well, Phred, even if they're not going as fast as you'd like. Guess some of Terry's worry wart trait rubs off on my now and then, especially when we don't hear any news from you, so be sure to check in often - k? ;)

It's warm here today too, but raining buckets, so if you do go for a hike, don't forget the rain coat and try to hike between the rain drops. :D

I'm also glad to hear the "locals" are taking good care of you. :D

Oh, and what SAS said....I did some research on thyroids the other day to try and get some answers, and I determined I better not read anymore! Seems there are a lot of people who have had a much harder time with their thyroidectomy and recovery than I have. It was awful reading all the horror stories of people losing their voices and botched surgeries and such. My surgery was such a piece of cake that it makes me wonder what type of doctor these people went to....was my doctor that good? Anyway, I determined I'd wait until my follow up appt. to ask my doctor the questions directly, but I do think finding a support group can be a good idea - which is why I went looking for one - but you also have to remember where the information is coming from and take it all with a grain of salt. I think a local in-person support group would be also be much better than an on-line one.

Bus Trip to the BigLake Park again!!

We'll try to overlook the "light rain".
Hey - where's ole Slow-Poke??

http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/rolleyes.gif
Ouwchie!

The ole legs & hips started to stiffen up not all that far from the Bus!
I guessed we'd gone about half the total distance we did yesterday when I
decided we'd better head back - before I had to crawl!
Good Golly - da Bus seems like a LOOONG way off!

We made it back (puff-puff).

Where's we headed now??

Back to da Ranch - I think Dad is a bit "Tired"!!

Phred, I'm glad you're feeling better and getting out in the fresh air every day, that is good for you, even for a short time - but you have to take it slow and easy! It's no wonder you're tired after what you've been through, so instead of "running" to the park, perhaps a few rounds around the ranch would be a good idea to begin with. ;) Listen to what your body tells you!

Try to get into a routine where you eat and sleep at the same hours every day - there's nothing wrong with a little afternoon nap, but be sure to set the alarm, so you don't overdo it!

It's good to hear your neighbors are bringing yummy ready made meals - now, be sure to eat all the greenies too! Vitamins will give you more energy.

It is very likely the medicine you take which make you groggy, so have a chat with you doctor about a possible change - or lower dose.

Keep getting better, Phred!! :)

Sending you lots of positive and healing thoughts! :)

Hugs and headbumpies from,
Fister and Randi

Hey, what happened to the "sticky" on this thread? I went looking for it and couldn't find it! Phred, in all your modesty did you tell Karen to unstick it? Naw-tee boy!

The reason I was looking for it is because you haven't checked in lately. We need regular uppydates to know you're still doing ok. When you don't check in we start thinking something might have happened so you can't check in, which makes us worry.

Come on C & S, let us know how Dad is doing! :D

<ring>
"HEY - Pet Talk's *lookin* for you!"
"Momma" Johanna called just as I was starting this post to see 'How I was doing'.

She sounded pretty *chipper* - she took the day OFF work and Grammy is
watching the Mini-Monster 2-Legger - two good reasons to sound *chipper*!
THANKS for the cheer-up call, Joh!!

I *thought* I'd posted on here ... guess I didn't ... sorry!

Yesterday (Thursday) afternoon "WE" took a Bus Trip -
to the "Groomer's" for ME, then off to Wally'sWorld for some
Christmas supplies an stuff. Thought we'd get an oil change for da Bus, too.
I shopped inside till they paged for da Bus ... then unloaded the 3 Amigos and
we *supervised* on the cold side of the garage while Wally did his thing.
The Muttts resumed *guarding* da Bus while I fiished the shopping.

Off to the Bank; then "What'll we do NOW?"
We stopped at a BigLake Park on the way home - out for a stroll ...
Didn't take too long for EBBERbuddie to decide we were all "cold enough" and
goin HOME sounded like the next thing to do! ... WARM felt good!

<ring>
"Dinner is on the way!"
Donny arrived moments later bearing Shirley's HOMEmade chilli, salad, chawklit cake,
and Dawggie Bisquits on the side!
YUMMY!!

I woke up in the 'Kliner Chair about 10:30 pm - to FOUR pairs of HUNGRY eyes!
Ooopsie! ... I fixed em up with their supper and watched the news ...
Zzzzzzzzzz...

Dunno what happened with Letterman and Ophra ??? ... NUTZ!
But dinner was Really Good!!

The Mutts took an Outie and then we all curled up in the BigBed. http://petoftheday.com/i/our_smilies/smile.gif

THANKFULLY the FurKids had no clue there was a problem ...
although now that I think about it, Cinder & Smokey spent quite a bit of time
perched in the Co-Pilot's spot *supervising* the drive home ...
Maybe they DID know.

Thanks, God ~ for letting me get them home safe & sound!!

I know thinks like this tend to play games with your mind. After my mom had her heart attack, she wouldn't go out of the house for the longest time becuase she was afraid something would happen to her while she was out and about. Took her awhile to get over that, so maybe you've got some subconcious thing going on where you think if you fall asleep you might not wake up, which would explain why you get all jittery and nervous. Oh, and did I ever tell you that I'm not a psychiatrist, but I'd like to play one on TV? ;) :D :p  Anyway, I'm not one to shy away from pyschiatrists and maybe it wouldn't hurt just to go talk to somebody....

Glad you're feeling ok otherwise, and glad you're keeping those Wally World security guys on their toes. :D

Have you tried putting some soothing music on? I have a portable tape player that I use when I have trouble sleeping. It shuts off automatically. I know they have them for cds now. I also leave a night light on. There's just something comforting to me to see a light.

I would reccomend a nice warm bath right before bedtime too. It's up to you if you want bubbles or not! :D (I personally would vote for them)

Being sleepy can be what's making you so tired.
