Importing Photoshop files

Hey, I have photoshop files that are saved as layers and consequently saved as .psd files. Do any of you that use other paint programs such as Paint Shop Pro know if .psd files can be imported into these other paint programs? If so, please tell me what program you use. Thanks !!

I just save them as JPEGs instead of Photoshop files.

Actually, I am asking because .jpgs are a flattened version of photoshop files with a white background, whereas Photoshop (.psd) files maintain their layers and transparency and I'm wondering if these can be imported into other paint programs for other friends to use .. that was the reason for my question. Thanks!
