Hello,

Does any one have any idea why my daughters cat seems to be jaundiced. He had pneumonia about 6 weeks ago and seemed to recover just fine. However, he just recently started to act sick again but when she took him to the vet, he said that he did not have pneumonia again, but he did have a fever. He gave him antibiotics and said if he wasn't any better on Monday to bring him back and they would do blood work. he did mention testing him for feline leukemia. Well today we noticed that his nose, lips, paws and eyes appear to be yellow. Any ideas?

Hi kas. Has your cat been eating normally? When my cat was very sick and stopped eating he became jaundice. The vet said that this sometimes happens in certain cats. The vet even tested my cat for liver disease but everything was normal. As soon as my cat began eating again his jaundice went away. I hope your cat feels better soon.:(

kak,
thanks for the reply. No he doesn't seem to be eating or drinking. I am hoping that you are correct and that once he starts to eat again, he will be fine. He is only 2 years old and the vet is going to do bloodwork tomorrow to see if he can find out what is wrong with him this time. the last time he was sick he knew right away that he had pneumonia but this time he had no reason for him to bave a fever until he does the bloodwork. He gave him 5 days of antibiotics first to see if he improved, if not the bloodwork is set for tomorrow. i hope he is going to be ok, he is the BEST cat.

Yes my daughter is calling the vet right now but they are not there until 4:00 this afternoon so she called the emergency clinic and may take him out there but she has a friend who has a niece who is a vet so she is calling her first. thanks, will let you know what happens.

Any news yet ? Hoping for a good outcome. Kitties have such amazing re-cuperative powers.

kas
03-24-2002, 04:53 PM
Well they took him to the emergency clinic and they couldn't or wouldn't make a definite diagnosis. Did bloodwork which they are going to fax to the regular vet and she has to follow up with him tomorrow. They indicated that it could be either liver disease or FIP but they (the emergency clinic) wants their normal vet to look at the results and make a diagnosis. They said to bring him home and try to get him to eat a mixture of chicken and rice. So I guess we won't know anything definate until tomorrow. we are very worried. AS I said he is only 2 years old and is the BEST cat. He will actually give her is paw and sit there while she trims his claws. Between her and I we have 4 cats and he has been with all of them so i am hoping that he first of all doesn't have anything fatal and that second of all, he doesn't have anything contagious and we won't loose all our cats. That would be heartbreaking too all of us as we love our cats to pieces.

Well Peterson is staying at the vet's office over night. He still is not sure what is the matter with him. While he does have some of the symptoms of FIP, he can not be absolutley sure that that is what is the matter with him. He wants to keep him, give him IV fluids, and antibiotics. He kept all of the paper work she has ever had about his health including the x-rays that were taken yesterday at the emergency clinic so he can really study his case tonight. He said that if he isn't any better by tomorrow, he may send him to another vet in the area and get some ultrasounds.. No really sure what he is searching for but hopefully he will get to the bottom of it soon. I will keep you all posted.

Kas,

I have four kitties but never heard of this jaundice
problem before. I'm glad the vet is keeping him overnite
so he can stay hydrated. Prayers and good wishes for
your kitty. Is is name Peterson ? That's a great name.

kas
03-25-2002, 08:38 PM
Yes the vet wants to get him hydrated and wants to keep a close eye on him. My daughter has to call tomorrow afternoon to see how he is and if the doc knows what this "virus" is. yes, he was already named Peterson when we went to pick him out at a pet adoption clinic at Pet Smart 2 years ago this August. He is the most affection, docile, loveable cat. Compared to what he was when he was six weeks old, what a change in his personality. He was a devil as a kitten but now he is just a big lug who is just so loveable and squeezable and he lets you do it.

Any word on how Peterson is doing?:(

kas
03-26-2002, 08:07 PM
Peterson is still holding his own. He is still with the vet, on iv antibiotics and fluids. The feline leukemia and the FIV both came back as negative but the FIP test will not be back until tomorrow. So we still don't have a diagnosis but at least he is still with us and hanging on. WE are praying for him to recover an be back with us soon.

The update today was good news. the FIP tets came back negative. The vet is really stumped. He is sending him to a specialist tomorrow for an ultrasound. When my 9 year old granddaughter heard that she was taken back. She said, he is a boy, he CAN"T be preganant. Guess she doesn't know that they do ultrasounds for other reasons than pregnancy. Anyway, so far, he is the same and is still hanging on with us. Keep praying everyone, we really appreciate it.

My prayers are with you too kas. I hope Peterson recovers soon. I know what you're going through because it happened to me last year. For about four months, my cat Pepper was sick off and on and went through many tests and was finally diagnosed with megacolon. He's a happy, healthy cat today. You can have a happy ending too :D just like me.

Well Peterson is home but not a definate diagnosis yet. She took him to a specialist today who at first thought it was lymphoma but after the ultrasound and looking at his blood work, and xrays he wasn't so sure. so they shaved his belly and did an ultrasound. His liver is very very hard so the new vet took 3 biopsies of his liver and will have the pathology report on Saturday. He gave my daughter his card with his home phone to call and get the results. In the meantime, he is on steriods plus 2 other meds and they have to get him to eat even if it means force feeding him. the vet said he could eat anything as long as they get some food into him. He loves tapioca pudding and yogurt so he did eat about 2 spoonsful of pudding this afternoon. If need be, they may have to put in a feeding tube until he starts eating again. I was over to see him just a little while ago and he has lost a lot of weight (but he could afford to lose it, he was very big). Ohter than than, he looks good and seemed to be comfortable. he was using his scratching post. It is so good to have him back home but so far since Sunday, she has paid the 3 vets almost $900. Thanks for all the prayers. Everyone has been asking about him, so I wanted to let you all know that he is doing ok for right now. lets just pray that he will continue to get better and stronger and back to his normal self. As the vet said, he is so young to be having all these problems.

Peterson will stay on my prayer list. It's good he is home now. Please, keep us posted.

kas
03-30-2002, 03:50 PM
Good News...the pathology came back negative so Peterson does not have liver cancer. The oncologist feels that it is fatty liver disease. He said to keep force feeding him for a week, continue the medications that he gave him and to call the regular vet on Monday to see how long he wants her to force feed him until they think they should put in a feeding tube. her feeling is that if she can get the food into him with force feeding why put in a feeding tube. The doctor today said this could go on for 2 weeks or it could be 3 months. But he does feel that he will recover. We are praying he will anyway. Looking at him today, he is so thin. He is a big cat and now we can feel his back bone. also today even inside of his ears are yellow but the important thing is that he doesn't have anything as fatal as cancer, FIV, FIP or leukemia. Keep praying for him.

03-30-2002, 04:04 PM
That's good news. Does Peterson even try to eat? I thought maybe something like baby food, beef or chicken, would help get him interested in eating again. If you got the strained kind it might be easier to get down him. You could ask your vet about it. It may not be too good for cats. We had an old dog we fed it too when she lost all her teeth. It was kind of a last resort type of thing. I'm sure the vet knows more about this than I do. It was just an idea. I wondered about the little guy earlier but didn't want to bug you. All paws and fingers still crossed here for all of you! Please keep us posted.

Oh, what wonderful news!!!!!!! I am so, so relieved for you.:) My heartdog, the Lab of my life, passed from liver cancer, and I was so hoping that Peterson's biopsy would come back negative. Liver disease, however, is tough on a kitty!! So try not to despair over his appearance right now. The important thing is that you know now what it is, and he can be treated. The weight will come back slowly. Just take it a day at a time. Bless you precious Peterson. Hearing the good news has made my Easter extra special. Love and hugs to you dear boy, from Sandra, Mr. B and Oliver

Thank you all once again for all the well wishes and prayers. He is trying to eat a little bit. the vet said that it doesn't matter what he eats as long as he eats something. He did give him some special food and she is able to get some of it into him and he has been eating just a little bit of tapioca pudding and yogurt. Hopefully each day will get better even though we know he has a long way to go before he is out of the woods but every bite is a step in the right direction. Again thanks for all the prayers and Happy Easter to everyone.

I'm so glad to here the good news about Peterson.:D When I had to force feed my cat the vet gave me Hill's Prescription Diet a/d. I then diluted it with some water and put it in a big suringe tube that had a curved tip. Pepper hated it but he got stronger each day and recovered. My vet will only put a feeding tube in animals as a last resort. Good luck and my prayers will be with you.:)

kas
03-31-2002, 06:28 PM
Yes that is the same food that the vet gave to Peterson. They dilute it and put it into a syringe and give it to him that way. He is still eating the pudding and yogurt and today he had a big drink of water on his own. So maybe that is a good sign. Thanks for all the advice, support and prayers we have gotten on this list. As I said before, there are no people like cat and dog people.

Sandra and friends,
Peterson is still the same. He is eating yogurt and tapioca pudding. they have to force feed him the special diet food that the vet gave them. My daughter thinks his nose is starting to look a little pink but I can't really say that I thought it was pink. Stilll looks yellow to me. He doesn't do too much but just lay around. His little brother Sean just can't understand why Peteson won't frolic and play like before or chase each other. So there really isn't much change but at least he isn't worse and that is the best news. the vet said he could stay like this for a week or 3 months. Just depends on how he responds to the meds. Time is the key. thanks for asking and keeping in touch. KAS

Hi all....just a little update. Peterson seems to be doing a little bit better. He actually got up the other morning with my daughter and sat in the bathroom while she took her shower which he usually does every day but hasn't been doing since he got sick. He also went out into the front hall way of their apartment buidling which he hasn't done in weeks and then last night and this morning she got him to eat bonker treats on his own. He is still pretty yellow though. he has started to fight them a little bit with the force feeding but my feeling is that maybe he is fighting them because he is starting to feel better. At least I hope that is what it is. lets keep all finger and paws crossed.

My daughter, granddaughter and I are going to be away starting on Thursday for 6 days so I won't be able to keep you posted. Peterson will be in good hands with his Dad and his Papa. They will take good care of him but I didn't want any of you to worry if you don't hear from me until next Wednesday or Thursday. Just keep him in your prayers. They seem to be helping. Hi...we are back from Disney World and Peterson has continued to improve and is doing much much better. He is eating like normal, acting like his old self and just seems so much better. He is still a little tiny bit yellow but my daughter is going to call the vet tomorrow to see if he needs a followup visit and to see if he is really out of the woods. We just don't want to let our guard down and then have him relapse. He is such a good kitty. He got to the point that he would let them open his mouth, drop the pill in and he would jsut swallow it. Thanks for all of your support.

Thank you for your concerns. Peterson is doing GREAT !!! He is eating, playing and acting completely normal. He is still a little yellow but the doc says that that is fine. He said it is almost like an orange stain and that it takes some time for it to go away but that he is fine and not to worry about the color. He is still a little on the thin side but I guess that will take time also for him to get back to his normal weight. Again, thanks for all your warm wishes. The supplement is called: Nutri-cal. It's great stuff. I keep it on hand for my cats. It's a high quality vitamin supplement in a paste form. The cats just eat it. My cats love it.
