An accident...prayers for Major please

On Wednesday, we went to the farm. Well, Major had gotten into some rat poison, and we are very sure he ate some. My dad was at the farm today again and he realized what had happened...I didn't know until around 6:00 pm tonight, and so we took him to the vet in Yorkton. They tested his blood and it didn't show any signs of posion, but it is the blood thinning kind, and she said that the symptoms might not show up for a little, and that it takes quite a while to show. So we are not sure if he ate it or not, but my dad really thinks he did because he found the container but no blue cubes, rat poison.

My dad doesn't know how much was left but I'm really hoping Major will be ok. They gave him a low dose of antidote I believe, and a low dose of Vitamin K, which is supposed to counteract the blood thinning. Please, please please please please keep him in your prayers! :(

Oh no. Oh my goodness not another one. I am so very sorry. Good thing you brought him to the vet, even as a precaution. This is something you don't want to mess with.
Major & you are in my prayers and will be for the next few weeks!!

Kaige just got into some yesterday. You sure got lucky though. Kaige is just a young puppy which makes it more dangerous & he was allergic to the injectable Vit. K.

How long does Major have to be on the Vit K treatment for?

God knows this is something that neither of us want to encounter again, or anyone else for that matter.

I will try to respond to your comments and answer questions tomorrow, sorry I do not have the time now. Thank you everyone though. Major is ok as of right now. I'm still worried about him though. I found blue poop and the rat poison was in blue cubes. He's not showing any symptoms or gum bleeding though.

Oh Maria! I just saw this thread. :( How is Major today? I hope he continues to get better. What a scary situation to be in. Two PT dogs within a week hurt from Rat Poison. :(

A few years ago, my friend's GSD got into some rat poison, and they didn't know it until she started bleeding. With the Vitamin K treatment she got better quick, and 4 years later is doing fine.

lv4dogs - I feel horrible about Kaige! :( I'm so sorry, I went searching after I posted this thread to see if anyone else had problems with this and was so shocked to see you had posted the same on the same day. :(

They only gave Major a low dose of Vit. K and that's it. He wasn't showing symptoms and it didn't show in his blood so they didn't want to give him too much. Plus we weren't 100% positive he ate it, but we are now because I found blue in his poop.

No bleeding yet, that is a good thing. He's good right now but a little hyper, we're going for a walk soon.

Oh no!! But I am glad that Major probably didn't eat the rat poison!!:) We once had a beagle that ate rat poison, and we had to pump his stomach to get the poison out...not fun, and it was scary!:(:(

They gave him a dose at the vets & didn't send you home w/ any?
Did you call them back & tell them you found blue feces? I don't mean to scare you but this is nothing to joke around with. Sometimes the symptoms can take up to a couple weeks to show, once symptoms show it is usually too late to do anything.
There's more symptoms to look for other than those, blood not clotting properly if he gets cut, bruises easily, color of the gums, bleeding gums, coughing, bloody &/or off colored stools, diarrhea, vomiting, hemorraghing, loss of appetite, lethargic, hair loss etc... almost any symptom can occur from poisoning.

If I were you I'd call the vet back & request some Vit K pills for home treatment. They should give you a script without seeing him and the Vit K is pretty cheap too.

Either way, but *especially* if you don't do the home treatment I'd get a coagultaion panel run in 2-3 weeks, it tests the clotting ability of his blood.
