Subject: Fw: Rescues/Transporters

Our Rescues and Transporters need to be aware of the health concerns
involved with handling animals from the hurricane region. When they go down
to transport animals, they need to find out what area the animals come from
and if they were from the New Orleans area, was it decontaminated? Risks of
disease is high to both people and animals. Heartworms will be a problem in
these regions. In a group of dog recently tested, 25% were heartworm
positive. We are recommending an isolation period of 7 to 14 days to watch
for signs of disease and illness prior to placing them out to the general
public. Of course, this will also give the animals a chance to rest from all
they have experienced.

Subject: Latest from Kim Keating

As you know, Kim is traveling to LA to work with the ASPCA to help these
animals. She called to say she heard that United Animal Nations of
Mississippi needs help. http://www.uan.org/ Also, she's already seen some
people living in a shelter who have their animals -- EARS is caring for them
in a nearby barn or something. There is info on volunteering with EARS on
the above website as well.

Subject: Best Friends Hurricane Relief Update

September 8, 2005.

5000 7000 emails

1000 phone calls per day

Your offers of help - volunteers, supplies, and everything else - have been
absolutely amazing.

In fact, in the last few days, the staff here at Best Friends have been
overwhelmed with messages and offers by phone and e-mail. We're getting
5,000 to 7,000 e-mails plus 1,000 phone calls every day. And right now, we
need to take two or three days to process everything that's still waiting.
The last thing we want to do is get backed up and become just another
bottleneck for people wanting to help. As we catch up, we will have a more
accurate idea of the needs that we still have and we'll again be posting our
needs on our website.

So please, no more offers of volunteer help or physical supplies for the
next few days.

If you don't want to wait that long, there are other rescue organizations
that may be looking for additional help or supplies. The two that we
recommend in particular are Noah's Wish which is stationed in Slidell,
Louisiana, and United Animal Nations who has deployed its Emergency Animal
Rescue Services (EARS) in Gonzalez, Louisiana.

This is going to be a long-term effort, and we're all still gearing up for
what is yet to come. For Best Friends, this last 10 days has been mostly
about emergency rescue efforts in New Orleans itself. When we arrived, the
day of the hurricane itself, we found ourselves immediately in the eye of
the storm, so to speak, as one of the very few animal organizations able to
get access in and out of the city.

In the weeks to come, the focus will begin to shift. We'll be looking at
foster/adoption programs, reuniting pets with their families, the health
care of animals who have been poisoned by the toxic waters of New Orleans,
and much more.

Each day brings new challenges. For us at Best Friends, we're breaking new
ground in this rescue effort, and facing new challenges every day. Your
continuing support is our lifeblood. So we will be straightforward in saying
what help we can use, and when.

If you've been delayed in getting a response from us over the last couple of
days, please accept our apologies.

Meanwhile, as ever, your donations toward the Hurricane Relief Fund are
always needed - enabling us to continue the rescue effort.

get dogs
Please forward this to all your friends...
Hi, my name is Ruby Smith, volunteer with the Humane Society of West
Louisiana! We are fielding THOUSANDS of calls from people affected by
Hurricane Katrina because we are the closest Humane Society with a
working telephone! (approximately 4 hours west of New Orleans in
Rosepine, LA)
We are doing all we can but have one big problem. SPACE!
We are taking as many strays from the area as possible but are having
hard time finding room for the family owned pets that are having to be
given up! These are people who have NO choice but to give up their
beloved pets due to this catastrophe. We are looking for help
from "Breed Specific Rescues", or anyone, to find homes for these
babies!
Currently, this is just an example of our purebred hurricane victim
dogs, who have all been very well behaved, but will be euthanized if
homes are not found.... soon!! We just don't have SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!
------ 3yo Husky, very sweet, getting very depressed, is eating
less and less
------- 7yo Pomeranian, won't stop shaking unless being held
------- ? yo Poodle, just adorable, but shivering and very difficult
to get out of cage
------- 1yo+ Collie, won't stop crying, unless being held
------- 4yo Cocker Spaniel, very cute, very, very upset.
Of course, we have an abundance of "mutts" that are just as deserving
of a loving and safe home... . If you know anyone who can
foster/rescue these loving animals, or any other rescue group who are
willing to help out - please contact the Humane Society of West
Louisiana! It is likely that we will be getting more and more calls
from owners who are having to make the choice of surrendering their
pets, but we just do not have the room for them!
Thank you So much!!
Please, continue to pray for the victims of Katrina, both human and
pets!
