A new update from the ASPCA this morning in regards to animal rescue efforts in the areas most affected by the hurricane. Please note that info changes by the hour. Thanks to the ASPCA for their report.
Right now their Southern Regional shelter is helping to coordinate efforts between the various rescue agencies to identify the rescue and housing needs of shelter animals. They have some people on the ground already including veterinary staff trained in animal rescue as well as humane enforcement officers in place along with a 40 foot van, a rescue boat, and a mobile hospital unit. They have joined their efforts with other animal rescue agencies including the Louisiana SPCA which lost its shelter after it evacuated their animals to Houston, TX.
On Saturday morning the LA SPCA, ASPCA, HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), American Humane, EARS, and other rescue organizations finally got the clearance to go into the flooded areas to rescue the many animals stranded and left behind by humans who evacuated. Shelters have been set up and a few agencies are already beginning to collect the names, descriptions and other information of animals rescued into a database which will soon be up at petfinder.com. Humans looking for their animals can search this database or also let the rescuers know they are searching for their four-legged family member. There are at least 600 names already in the database and the number is expected to rise to at least a 1,000 by the end of today (this number is most likely higher since this was as of Saturday).
As of Monday morning a caravan of animal control vehicles, zodiac boats, equipment, and personnel from The ASPCA, HSUS, Code 3, ARL of Boston, Louisiana SPCA are en route to rescue at least 50-150 animals after they became stranded on the roof of Windy Boggs Medical Center in New Orleans. A doctor stayed with them after refusing to be evacuated with other hospital staff members and they were quickly running out of food and water. The animals belonged to the hospital staff.
Rescue workers will also pick up animals seen stranded in the area as well. As you can tell many animal rescue groups have sent workers to join in rescue efforts including the Arizona Humane Society, as well as Noah's Wish. This is a massive undertaking and as many animal deaths that are to be expected there will certainly be quite a number of cats, dogs and other animals that survived and are in need of immediate help.
We here at Cat Galaxy will stay on top of trying to get the latest info on rescue efforts. We are also developing an audio PSA on what people can do if they wish to donate towards rescue efforts. The PSA will air on Cat Galaxy but we will make it available for other media outlets should they wish to carry it.
