I wanted you all to see my new friend, my Paw Pal Blackie, from "PuppyMill Rescue." I thought the Chihuahua Moms would especially like seeing him. Thanks to Aly, who gave us the link here on Pet Talk a couple of months ago, I was able to make Blackie (a.k.a. "Black Jack") a part of our extended family. Hope this little boy finds his forever home soon! I'll be getting monthly updates, so, all paws crossed!! The director is not too, too confident as he is still very shy and has several health issues, including a broken chest bone which was not reset before it healed. But even if he is not adopted, he will never leave a loving foster home! He did find one forever home, but was returned:( The shelter described him as "older" (he is 7 years old) and not too "pretty!" I think he's precious; don't you??:)

P.S.....My first Paw Pal Bill Jr., a yellow Labbie, was transferred to Lab Rescue! Seems he was a typical Lab puppy, with a penchant for escaping his confines!:D He needed the love and guidance of an experienced Lab Mom!!:)

Sandra,

That's soooo Neat !!! I didn't know you were a Paw Pal.
What a sad past for Blackie, yet another disappointment
after he thought he had found a 'forever home' and was
returned. Congrats to you on getting a New Pal !!! Liz.

SANDRA!!! You big sweetheart!! How nice of you to do that for precious Blackie. That is just my favorite site. I need to go there and get a new Paw Pal ASAP!

Blackie reminds me of Tabby, my 7 yr old foster Chi who I am taking through heartworm treatment right now.

Hi Sandra,

Just wondering if you would please post updates
from time to time(when you get them), on your
new Pal Blackie? I would consider him part of
the Pet Talk Pack too. It would also serve as
a nice reminder to us all of the existance of
these Puppymill rescues in need of a Special Pal.
Thanks, Liz.

I can't see the picture!! :(((( You are a good person to save the little puppy mill victim....I can't even look at pictures of those places without being disgusted. Keep us up to date!!

Mugsy,

Just wanted to say that the rescuers don't go to the
mills to get these dogs but usually buy them at dog
auctions and bring them into a rescue situation. You
won't see pictures of the dreaded puppymills, those
people are much to savy to let anyone in with a camera
that would reveal their dirty secrets. Auctions are held
by the millers to sell off the old, maimed and used up dogs.
(Ones that have stopped reproducing for them) The dogs who
have little chance at being rehabilitated & adopted, can be
helped by people who can sponser them by being a Pal.

I can guarantee that if you check out the rescue at

http://igrescue.org/index2.html

you will find "happy endings that will warm your heart",
and even give you some hope for the human species
after all. There really are more dog lovers in this world
than we will ever know. Liz.

OMG!!! I'm so happy, and so will Blackie be, to know that he has so many friends.:):):) Oh, please, do not give me ANY credit for "saving" the little Blackie! That is credit due the wonderful people all over the country who devote their LIVES to saving these tortured souls!!! And to the true foster parents who share their homes and their hearts these beautiful creatures; to them, thank you!!! I am proud just to be called his friend; his "Paw Pal!" At the kennel where I work, we fostered 6 doggies plucked from the evil grasp of a puppymill in suburban Mass. It was just a about one year ago. Over 100 dogs were taken from this woman/breeder. While being adjudicated, the dogs were placed in foster care throughout the state, in shelters, foster homes, and kennels providing care at no cost, pending the final outcome. Well, it took ONE YEAR before the case came to court. The woman wanted the 6 doggies we were fostering at the kennel most of all; she claimed she "loved" them! Their names are Bud, the Rottie, Honey, the Golden (who became seriously ill from heartworm infestation) Blackie the Pom (who now lives DOWN THE STREET FROM ME!) Jake the Shep, and Millie and Wille, the Basset Kids. Oh, how we all cried when they left. But, they are all now in wonderful forever homes! Their case brought to light the horrors of the "puppymill." I have pics of them all. When I get them scanned I will post them for all of you to see! And it would be an honor to post monthly updates on my little Blackie pal! I guess Photogra has performed it's magic and "erased" my Blackie pic. So, I will post his pic. here in an attachment. Isn't he a dapper little man! I love you Blackie!! Thanks everybody SO MUCH for reading about him! Love, Sandra

What a sweetie....I really hate stupid people....and anyone who would do that to dogs (or for that matter, any living thing) deserves that title and that's being WAY too nice. But Blackie is really cute and I'm glad he's got a good home.

Who said Blackie is not pretty??? He is so cute with the sweetest expression. I'd fall in love with him very easily. Good on you for caring about him, Sandra. I just know that Blackie will go on to have the wonderful life that a cute little chappie like him deserves.:)

I got some happy news today; an encouraging update on my little PawPal Blackie. When I get the pics I will post them. I think it's such a good sign that he is starting to cry when his Mommy leaves for work:) These pups have been so physically and emotionally traumatized. Every step forward, albeit little ones, are reason to celebrate! Good job Blackie!!

I'm Blackjack's foster mom! :)

He is doing very well here...we had a few problems come up, but, with the help of a rescue friend familiar with chi's, we "overcame" the obstacles.

He's still scared at times, but, he whines now when he knows I'm getting ready to go to work. (He doesn't like it when I go to work...neither does anyone else, but, someone has to pay the mortgage! LOL!)

I will try and get some pics of him up soon on PMR for you! :)

So the little guy is doing his sponsor proud. I hope that they will be able to find a forever home for him soon. Having sponsored several dogs at HUA, I know how much your pal can get into your life even though you never see him. Blackie, we are all rooting for you.

Sandra, Blackie is just an adorable little pup. He looks like a little lovey. I guess I missed something I don't understand what it means to be a PawPal, are you keeping him until he finds a home or are you sponsering him? I was just wondering what a PawPal meant?

Thanks everybody!! I'm going to check for new pics shortly! Hope to see him happy and playing!:D Jackie, a PawPal is a sponsor to a puppymillrescue. com foster home. The foster Mom emails me updates, pics., etc. Poor little one had a rough life:( But he's in a wonderful foster home now! Thanks for asking!

Sandra,

Any news on Blackie lately? If you've already posted info
some place else, I apologize for asking again, but I missed
it. Hope he's still learning to enjoy life with his foster mom.
Thanks, Liz & Buddy.

Thanks so much for asking Liz! I just got an email from his foster mom recently. The news wasn't too good, I'm afraid. Seems he was adopted, then returned:( He is just soooooooooo fearful! His foster mom says she will continue to work with him and will always be there for him no matter what. I've always been a "big dog" Mom but I must say, these sweet little Chi's have really stolen my heart. At the kennel I work at, I have found them to be such mighty little pups, so active, curious, sweet and loving. And I adore there muscular little bodies!:D They are not little yippers and snappers as they have so mistakingly been described by some. I'll let you know when I get an update. She's supposed to send me some new pics soon!

And Liz, look out for my Petland update. I was escorted off the property last weekend and the security guards attempted to confiscate my literature! They wanted to know "where I got it!!" I told him that I do not live in a police state where public info. is confiscated or my right to distribute it impeeded! That's when 5 more officers appeared and we were asked to leave! We have been speaking with the police and Mall manager about returning. And WE WILL be back in force! Even several animal control officers on the Cape will be in attendance! If we cannot access the mall proper, we are permitted to set up our table, signs, literature off site at the entrance, as long as we don't hinder the flow of traffic. The store IS selling puppies, though the rumor was they would not be. We found out that the dogs are sedated at night to keep them "quiet!!" The whole thing started when one of our group asked a young worker who was out for her cigarette break, if she was aware of the horrors of the puppymill, and why she was contributing to the suffering of helpless animals for minimum wage. She was the one who called security! Well, I think I just updated you! Thanks for asking, and wish me luck! The handcuffs come next! LOL!

Our resident REBEL, Sandra!!!! Making "waves" at the mall!!!! Just wish I were closer and I'd be there in a heartbeat....although I am ashamed to say that I financed a few Petlands before I was "in the know". :o I'd pass them on to someone else these days.

I feel so in the dark--I didn't even know what a PetLand was/is until Mugsy's post in Dog General!

We don't have them out here but tell me how I can help!

Sandra, are you a member of "Their Guardian Angels?" If not, if you will email me the who, what, when, where-- (and any updates thereafter)--I can fwd it to the group.

Hi Tonya! Like Logan AND myself, for years I was unaware of the horrors of the puppymill and the fact that those cute "puppies in the window" came from such shops of horror! I checked out Their Guardian Angels. What a wonderful org. and site! I had not heard of them until now. I belong to one org., www.puppymillfighters.com that has a ton of info. about puppymills, and especiallly about Debbie's Petlands' "partnership with them!!!!!!!! It give all sorts of info. on demonstrating, leafleting, protesting etc. And it gives a list of locations of Petlands established and ones in the planning. I got so much of my info. and protocol from them. They have leaflets and pamphlets that you can print off to distribute. If there isn't a Petland near you, you can still ask other petstores like Petco and PetsMart, as well as vet. offices and places where animal people visit, if you can leave/post some pamphlets. Most people are totally unaware that such a thing as a puppymill even exists!! I'll let you know how it goes this next go round. This time we hope to get the media involved and I'm working on a letter to the editor of our local newspaper. Thanks for asking!!

Sandra,

Thank you for the updates on Blackie and also on the
Petland boycott by your group. Poor Blackie may be too
emotionaly scarred to ever adjust completely with anyone
but his foster mom. But she did say he had a home with her
no matter what, didn't she? It's a miracle he can trust any
human being at all after what he's lived through. Bless his
heart. There should be no handcuffs needed, if nobody loses
their cool, and sticks to the program.( It's hard not to be
emotional about these issues), but like Puppymill Fighters
says "Be kind, you too were ignorant once".

Zippy,

Check out http://puppymillfighters.com it's one site with
a lot of info about Petland in particular, but there are other
Pet Stores that sell puppymill dogs. Liz.

Thanks guys--goin' to check out the links now.

I can not believe these (Petland) creeps actually colaborate with the puppymill owners!

Just to clarify :o , I (unfortunately) do know the horrors of puppymills. I understand, supporate, and congratulate those who work hard to stop the pain, suffering, and abuse of pet store critters, but the question that weighs heavily on my mind...

Who saves the Pet Store Puppies, Kitties, Bunnies?

The root of the problem lies in greed (more bang for the buck--more pups per litter) and a general lack of concern for the animals' wellbeing (no spay/neuter operation, no shots, no LOVE). There seems to be alot of attention at the beginning (puppymill) and the end (shelter) of the cycle....but at what point do we focus on the pets who are presently *IN* the pet store? (Please don't get me wrong, I have nothing but applause and well wishes for rescue/shelter pets placed in good homes.)

I'll readily admit that Sophie came from a pet store and by doin' so, I'll also admit to being part of the problem. I knew the "pet store" game of buying from bad breeders (*though at the time, I did not know that they bought bunnies WAY BEFORE 6wks of age). However, Sophie was soo tiny and soo sick that I just could not leave her there. (eek! here come the tears...) I know I was/am a part of the problem by purchasing her from a pet store. I can't explain the spark that happened between us, but I knew I couldn't leave her there to die or become snake food.

...I apologize...I can't finish this post right now... gotta go get tissues 'n dry my eyes :o

Gio
07-25-2002, 03:16 AM
I'll also admit to being part of the problem

I actually don't think you are part of the problem. You saved her. If you didn't buy her she would not be here with us. I don't think many people would have bothered with her if she was sick. It's another form of rescue.

Over here cats and dogs are usually in a store only if someone ordered them. You can get cats and dogs from shelters but if you want other pets, like ferrets rabbits and birds you can only get from a pet store.

Every time I pass in front of a petstore and I see rabbits birds and other small animals I just ask myself "What happens if noone buys them?" It's so upsetting I've never had the courage to go in and ask. :(

wolflady
07-30-2002, 05:39 PM
Yes, the whole cycle really stinks when it comes to dogs and cats in Pet stores. It's really a no-win situation. The poor animals are in there because of the greed of puppymills relying on the cuteness factor of the animals to sell them. Most of the time they are under 8wks of age and unhealthy.
The sad thing is that if nobody buys the animals, most will be sent to laboritories for experimentation! :(

tatsxxx11
07-31-2002, 06:57 AM
Exactly WL!! And the cycles continues. Businesses like Petland count on all of us animal lovers out there, our big hearts, to keep the vicious cycle going. Seeing a sick, homeless puppy in a cramped cage, one that we fear will be euthanized, makes all of us want to "rescue" them.:) And as soon as that puppy is purchased, they replace it with another:confused: I believe that legislation, banning the breeding of ALL dogs in puppymills, is the only way to stop this once and for all. The AKC does have a LOT to do with this as they issue AKC Pedigree papers to these puppymill owners and their puppies! I constantly email/write my legislators, and those in states where puppymills flourish, imploring them to support legislation to shut them down. Sudilar has a great thread running with an email "chain" to muster support from notables and celebrities. I'll find and post the link to the thread soon.

That would be great! Yes, I agree...the whole puppymill industry needs to be shut down! I don't think the USDA should even be regulating...let alone allowing such a thing to go on. It would be so much better if petstores got in league with rescue orginazations, so we could adopt out all the homeless animals instead of letting puppymills take over the show. I would think that if ALL petstores worldwide did this...what would be the purpose of puppymills?? Stores wouldn't 'SELL' dogs and cats, but would 'ADOPT' rescued animals into homes. Let's help stamp out those puppymills and puppy brokers!!!
