View Full Version : I Just Got Back From The ER With Sunny!

Hi, this evening I noticed that Sunny kept jumping in and out of the litter box. He wouldn't do it right away but would wait 10-15 minutes to jump in again. He kept covering whatever he was doing up so I couldn't see what he was doing. I finally made him get out the last time so I could see if he had done anything. He peed a very small amount so I called the ER and asked them if I should bring him in or should I wait until morning when my vet was open. They said that they could check his bladder free of charge and that if a vet had to exam him it would be $95.
I brought him in and luckily his bladder was empty. Now I have to call my vets office in the morning and I'll have to drop him off for a urinalysis. I sure hope it's nothing more than a simple UTI. Please send him lots of prayers and positive thoughts. My Sunny has never had any urinary tract problems and he'll only be 5 years old on Aug.25th. He usually drinks a lot of water and I've also been adding some water to my furkids food. He has been under a lot of stress lately because I had the carpets cleaned last week and they had to spend the day at my parents house. The people below me are also remodeling their condo and they make a lot of noise and Sky's been trying to play very rough with Sunny and bugging him to death. They also went to have their nails trimmed yesterday so Sunny's been on quite a few car trips lately.
It's very good to know that the ER will do free bladder checks because I always thought that the minute you walked in the door that you would be charged the $95. I'll sleep much better tonight knowing that Sunny's bladder is empty. I'll try to update you tomorrow as soon as I can. Thanks for all of the well wishes in advance.

Oh no, Tracey! That has to be worrisome for you!!
I hope Sunny was just playing a bit (like my Basie and Micah do) in his box.
Hugs and positive thoughts coming Sunny's way.

Oh,oh- that sounds like some UTI- it was the same with Tigris (and his bladder was empty too).
Hope they find soon that it is only a simple UTI and nothing more complicated:)

Good luck with the vet today.
Tracey (you and everyone) should ask their vet to show them how to palpate the bladder so that in an emergency they can at least tell if it is full or not. When we needed to express Rutherford's bladder before his surgery my vet had me do it at home vs. staying in the hospital. So I assume any vet could at least SHOW you what to feel for.

Good luck Sunny! I know what you mean about the straining. I rushed Pouncer to the vet a few weeks ago for the straining and it was nothing more than stress due to the fosters and the chronic diarreah... hoping its something as simple for Sunny too.

Poor Sunny! :( It could very well be stress related. If it's a UTI, I hope some antibiotics can cure it, and he'll be back to normal in no time.
Sending positive thoughts and kisses, and purrs from Fister. :)

Oh no! I sure hope it's a simple UTI, you've been through so much with Storm and Cirrus and their urinary tract troubles that you sure don't need this, especially now with Starr still recovering and Pearl not home yet!
Good thoughts and prayers going out for Sunny!

Thanks everyone.:) Sunny is at the vets and they'll call me later at work. I also asked them to make sure he wasn't constipated just in case this is the real problem. When Storm was having his problems I asked the vet to show me how to palpate his bladder. Well I still couldn't feel anything and he said it takes a while to know what you're feeling for. I wish I could learn. I'll update you as soon as I know more but it won't be until tonight since I won't have any computer access at work. Thanks again.:)

Thanks for all of your well wishes. Both Sunny and I appreciate them very much.:)Sunny most likely has a UTI and I've noticed that he hasn't really been acting like himself for the last 2 weeks. I thought it was the heat but I also knew he was stressed too. Sunny had a urinalysis and I won't know the results until tomorrow evening. He also had a culture test done and I won't know these results until 3-4 days from now. I sure hate waiting for test results.:( For the time being Sunny will be on clavamox pills 2 times a day for the next 2 weeks. Hopefully the clavamox will do the trick because I'm going out of town on Aug.23rd to pick up my baby Pearl and I'd hate to have to have some one else pill Sunny.
The vet tech called Sunny a goofy boy because after he finally used the litter box, he decided that it would make a nice bed so he slept in there the rest of the day. When she handed Sunny to me he was very stinky so I had to wipe him down with baby wipes and I also sprayed some leave in pet conditioner on him. Now he smells great.:) He was very hungry and gulped down his food. He's so glad to be home and I'm very happy too. Hopefully the meds will work and that they won't give him diarrhea. Thanks again everyone.:)

The pills should start working real soon now - if they haven't already. You probably know this already but you will usually be able to see a noticeable improvement within 24 hours, but his pee biscuits won't get completely back to normal for a few days yet.
Sure hope the results come back that it's only a UTI and nothing more serious. :)

Thanks again everyone.:) Sunny slept on my pillow for part of the night and then he slept beside my legs. I could tell that he wasn't feeling well.:( One of my furkids threw up a lot either during the night or early this morning. I sure hope it wasn't Sunny and if it was I hope that his body had already absorbed the pill that I gave him last night.
Sunny was extemely hungry this morning and was howling for his food which is his normal behavior so this is a good sign. He's also been drinking very well. He's still jumping in and out of the litter boxes and when I cleaned them there were many small little pee clumps no larger than the size of a dime and some were even smaller than that. I hope the antibiotics will kick in quickly and do there thing. I also hope that Sky will leave Sunny alone so he can rest. I told Storm to make sure that Sky doesn't bug Sunny while I'm gone. Thanks again.:)

Hopefully all will be well by the time you leave for AZ! I'm sure it will! If he keeps vomiting they may have to switch his antibiotics. Bo can't handle some, whereas others she can. Good luck!

Sunny's seems to be doing a little better and there's been no more throw up today so it may have been Storm or Sky. His urinalysis results were normal except that they had a small amount of blood in them. Luckily he has no crystals either. The vet feels that he may have the idiopathic form of FLUTD. This means that the cause is unknown. They also mentioned that he has a very small bladder.
I won't know the results of the culture test until about 3 more days or so and this should tell if or what kind of bacteria infection it is. Even if he has no bacteria in his urine, the vet said to keep giving him the antibiotics and if it's the idiopathic form then it will take about 7 days to see improvement. I sure hope it won't take this long.:(
I've been reading more about FLUTD and I'm already doing exactly what is recommended. I've stopped feeding my furkids just dry food. They now get dry mixed with wet and I also add some water to it to make it more moist. They have 3 large water dishes which I clean daily. I can't always reduce stress but I've been trying and this is another reason why I no longer have Cirrus.
What else can I do?
