So we left Saturday at noon. The drive to Haines takes a little over four hours. This time it took closer to 5 as we had to go through some nasty road construction areas! It's a beautiful drive though:

Taken through the windshield on the Haines Highway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/haines_road.jpg
Taken at the rest stop where we pulled over to eat lunch.

After a little chat with the very nice U.S. customs officer, we arrived in Haines, AK.

I refuse to sleep in a tent so we rented this little cabin.

Late in the afternoon, we headed over to the South East Alaska State Fair. We wandered around the grounds, saw lots of people we knew from the Yukon, many we hadn't seen for months at home! At 9pm, the concert started--this is the reason we were in Haines!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/allison.jpg
Allison Moorer opened for Steve Earle. She is a very talented young woman. That tiny body holds a massive voice! She's also engaged to Steve. They were very sweet on stage together (they sang a duet during his show) Here's hoping that his seventh marriage works out!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/stevie.jpg
Then came Steve Earle!!!:D :D He seemed a little nervous at first, but there was some contraversy over him playing at the fair. Some of the locals thought he was too political. However, the crowd loved him and he quickly relaxed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/stevie2.jpg
I have seen alot of Steve Earle shows--one on every tour since the Copperhead Road album, 18 years ago! This was the best one ever. He played for close to three hours, then came back out and did a 3 song encore. He was chatty with crowd, ranted lots about his political beliefs. It was a fabulous show!!

Still more coming............

On Sunday we were up early and headed out on to the ocean. My co-worker was in Haines with her hubby and their fishing boat. So we got to go fishing for Halibut. Well, Stuart fished, I took pictures. The fish weren't biting but we had a good time anyway and the surroundings were stunning!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/rainbowglacier.jpg
There are lots of glaciers surrounding the Haines area. This is the Rainbow Glacier.

Another glacier, the Davidson I think.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/lynncanal.jpg
Mid-afternoon the weather started to get a bit nasty out in the open ocean so we headed back to the marina. This was taken in the Lynn Canal area.

Sunday night we had a campfire and went hiking around the area. There are many, many bears in the area. We saw a young grizzly, but it was too dark for the picture to turn out. The salmon were running in the river so the bears were out eating in the evenings.

Monday morning, we headed out in the kayaks. Stuart had borrowed a kayak from a friend of his.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/kayak_fishing.jpg
He tried fly-fishing from it, but it was hard to land a fish from in the boat. I have to give him credit--he hates kayaking, but tried it for my benefit!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/stuart_fishing.jpg
After a couple hours, he went fly-fishing on the Chilkoot River, which he truly loves to do and I kept paddling by myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/chilkootlake.jpg
Chilkoot Lake is a massive, stunning place!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/chilkoot.jpg

This is the entrance to the Lake. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's awe-inspiring when you first see it.

Late Monday afternoon, we had to head home. We seriously considered staying an extra day, but the next ferry sailing wasn't until Wednesday and we couldn't get away with quite that long!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/leaving_haines.jpg
On the ferry, pulling out of the Haines harbour.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/ferrydeck.jpg

me on the deck.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/glacier_ferry.jpg
More glaciers were visible along the ferry route.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/ferry_fall.jpg
And lots of waterfalls. I love seeing waterfalls.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/princessship.jpg
An hour later, we pulled into the Skagway, Alaska port. Skagway is a major stop for cruise ships. This huge ship was right beside our ferry. The ferry was large, but it looked like a toy beside the cruise ships! Skagway is a tourist trap and there were thousands of tourists in town on Monday. We didn't stay long!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/cancustoms.jpg
This was taken at the Canadian Customs office. The drive from Skagway to Whitehorse is only a couple hours long, but it's very pretty too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v38/Glacier1998/scenery%2005/home.jpg
And then we were home, much to the huskies' delight!

AK - Alaska
AR - Arkansas

Glacier ~ Thanks for sharing. I haven't been to Haines in years and it's just as beautiful as I remember.

BTW - How did you edit the subject title to include (Alaska)? Seems I've tried to edit my subjects before and couldn't get it to work.

Not having the slightest ideas of state abbreviations it was obvious for me that this must be Alaska. Oh I HAVE to see that one day. And seeing you kayaking on Chilkkot Lake- I'd wish I was there:)

The problem is: I love it if it's not too hot and can live very well with nasty weather but Siegmar wants it warm. So we got to the British Columbia-Alaska border- but I am not sure Siegmar wants to repeat that experience :)

It just let me edit it like the rest of the post, but I think that might be new. I seem to remember not being able to do that before too!

I lost the US map in my head for a moment. THEN, I realized........"OHHHHHHHH ALASKA! DUH!!!!!!" LOL!!!!! No wonder!!! Now we ALL know Alaska is one AMAZING, GORGEOUS, STUNNING state! Makes so much more sense now. :D

I love Allison Moorer! The first I heard her was on the Horse Whisperer soundtrack. She's beautiful! That's cool that she's engaged to Steve Earle. Looks like a concert I'd have enjoyed, for sure.

That picture of the entrance to the lake made me cry. It's just so beautiful, and, I love that feeling of being so small standing in the presence of nature like that. Awe inspiring, is right. That picture of you on the deck of the cabin is actually my favorite, though. Not sure why, it's just comforting somehow.

Nope, he won't be going anywhere for fires this year. His back is too messed up to let him fight at all. Since he's a private contractor they usually keep him in the territory. I think most of the Yukon's firefighters are in Ontario and BC right now. I hope the fires aren't too close to you.

Most of the huskies are always up for a visitor. Ozzy will bark at you every time he sees you for at least 3 days. After 3 days, you don't qualify as a stranger anymore and he'll be your buddy. Delta lets no one touch him, but he'll have long conversations with you! Earle will immediately flop for a belly rub and stay that way for as long as you keep rubbing! Founder will lean in for pets and knock you on your butt if you aren't careful! Muskwa will whine, cuz that's what he does! He's very hard done by, you know!

Glacier the cat will meet you at the door. Pete will immediately want in your lap. Boots will play with your shoes, while you are still wearing them. Felicia will hide for a few hours. Polly will yowl cuz that's what she does! Ivy and Onyx will watch from a distance until they see a chance for food or a warm chair!

Wow, truely stunning! I don't think I'd ever get anything done if I lived up there, I'd be too busy taking in the view all the time! (This is what I tell myself- that it's a good thing to live where it's flat and boring, cause I'll be more productive.)
Thanks for sharing the gorgeous pictures! Hey, is that Muskwa woo-wooing you home?
