Nala is currently on cephalexin for her hot spot.
It's healing nicely and fur is growing in and around it. Besides her wanting to play really bad (I won't let her because I don't want her scabs to be broken) she's itching her face and wanting to itch her hot spot really badly. I currently have a sock on her but it keeps falling off and I don't want to make it too tight so that it does stay on.

Does anyone know what else I can do to stop the itchiness on her face and hot spot? We've been occasionally sprinkling some Gold Bond Medicated Powder on the owwies.

The poor girl is just miserable not being able to play and being so itchy. I've been trying to keep her resting but it's hard when Kiara is bored out of her mind and wanting to play as well. (It's been raining so she can't go outside and swim!)

Her hot spot is looking a lot better, however..

Hope Nala gets feeling better soon! Do you have any dog booties? That may work better than a sock to keep her from scratching.

Do they give Cortizone shots to dogs? That would really help
relieve the itchy feeling for her. I know my Vet has given a shot
to RB Buddy before for an itch due to flea allergy, but I don't
remember what it was. The hot spot on Nala's back has really
improved a lot. Good luck till it heals completely.

I'm not familar with hot spots but when my dog itches and bites her feet from allergies I give her a Benedryl, it might be worth a call to your vet.

I too wondered about a cortisone shot if the itching is really bad, or perhaps even some cortisone cream. I'd give the vet a call and ask about it.

I wasn't familiar with cephalexin, so I looked it up, and it's an antibiotic. It will help her wound heal, but it won't help with the itching. I'd call your vet and ask if it can be taken with benadryl, I'm sure it'd be fine. Also ask about the dose of benadryl she should take. I would say two 25mg. pills twice a day as needed, but ask your vet first. I wouldn't go as far as getting a cortisone shot unless the benadryl doesn't work for her.

Another thing I've had VERY good luck with is Allercaine spray (http://www.activek9.com/to-6151.html). It works great, I even use it on myself when I get a bug bite. :)

Okay, I was thinking about Nala and her hot spot a minute ago, and I said to myself, "oh yeah, I have that Dog Owner's Home Vet Handbook, I bet that has something to say about treatment for hot spots!"

Anyway....
Here's what it says....

Gently cleanse the skin with a dilute povidone-iodine shampoo (Betadine) or a chlorhexidine shampoo (Nolvasan). Allow thw skin to dry. Then apply an antibiotic steriod cream (Panolog or Neocort) twice a day for 10 to 14 days.

I have no idea what all of these medications are, and I'm not sure if you do or not, but I really hope this helps!;)

When I worked at the vet, you could get some spray to help stop itching (Bentagin?). You could try that. She's probably itching because the skin is healing.

Benadryl may not help the itching, but it will make her sleepy...and not want to play as much. So maybe that could help too? ;)

Nala I feel your pain...I once had a hot spot right ON my nub!

Louie's vet has us give him Benedryl twice a day to help ease the itchy skin, also had us increase his Omega 3's so he gets Missing Link added to his Canidae twice a day too. That helped A LOT.

When it gets too bad sometimes we've used some medicated sprays. Among them being a leave in conditioner from Buddy Splash ( www.cloudstar.com ) it was the flea formula , even tho he had no fleas it helped. There we a couple of Anti-Itch hydrocortisone sprays we used too, from the local pet store.

We've also used Bitter Apple and socks --- He didn't like that. I bought baby sox and vet wrap... it worked in a pinch.

What about the no-pain Polysporn? I'll help it heal & will numb the area.

This lady at work sliced open her thumb with a box cutter. I am the First Aid person, so I cleaned it & then put the no-pain Polysporn on it. She said he couldn't feel any pain (the cut was right into her meat too, it was fairly gross). She said she had to add more no-pain Ploysporn to it after 8 hours, because it would start to again. But aslong as the no-pain was on, she said she couldn't tell the gash was even there.

And while it was healing (scabbing over) it wasn't itchy at all. She couldn't feel it :)

I know its ok for dogs. Our Vet has recomended it many times.

The fastest way to relieve the itchies is a cortisone shot. The vet has to administer it. When Dusty breaks out from his allergies, we give him the antibiotic along with 20MG of cortisone (internal) for a few days (high dose) and then wean him to 5MG every other day for maintenance. After he's been on maintenance for a week, I wean him off.

His allergies are environmental so I have to bath him several times a week in clear water (no soap). Topically, I use an over the counter cortisone cream. Any topical that works for humans to relieve itch will work on the dog too. Hot Humid weather is the worst time of year for Dusty's allergies so we are fighting it right now too. :(

yeah a spray.. I forgot what it calls but all the vet offices should have it, the common one and it helped crayola so well!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and replies. She seems a lot better now as far as itching her hot-spot. She did itch at it a bit yesterday and itched off part of the scab. I was glad to see brand new skin and no bleeding! :)

Her face is bothering her the most. There 3 really deep holes that she keeps trying to itch at. :(
Hopefully they will go away. Although the pills she's taking aren't meant for relieving itchyness, it seems after she takes the pill she doesn't itch at much.
