I bought a small caton of catnip at the pet shop. When I open it and put on the floor my older cat wants to eat it. My little one reaches in with her pay and scatters some of it on the floor. then she goes about sniffing and playing with it. The older one kind of gets agressive with her and wants to hog it. He loses interes first with it and then she loses interest.

What do your cats do? I thought it made them mellow but not my oldest one.

Mine seem to want to eat it rather than play in it but if I put some in a toy, they play like mad with it...

Is it bad to let them eat a lot? And how much is enough? Don't want them to be sick.

Ours each have their own catnip toy, which they just love! I have never given them just plain catnip so I don't know if they would eat it or not.

Dylan, Eliot and Lizzie love their nip. They will eat it and roll in it - looking glassy eyed like the picture of Maya! After the initial high - they go off for a L O N G nap!! I have never seen them get sick from eating it - I also drink the tea:D (I use regular loose tea for everyone and fresh from the yard)

There seem to be different sorts of catnip, but I found a few links, the first with pictures of the plant.

I've been growing Mint, then dried it and crushed it. It's really easy to grow, it spreds like weed on speed! Fister reacts to it, as to the catnip you buy - he tries to eat it. I'd hoped he would roll around in it and be goofy. :D

Perhaps I need the Canadian brand.

Oh btw, the first time we had to transport Fister in a box, our vet sprayed something inside, it was supposed to calm him down. I don't remember the name of it, it may have been Baldrian (Valerian). I'll ask! :)

Julie has no reaction to it at all. She just looks at it and goes on her way.

This is the catnip from Alaska. They sell toys with catnip inside but I think I could make the toys myself.
