I love ducks but I must admit, I've never heard of a Muscovy. Any pics?

I've bookmarked it for later reading. :)

Poor duckies. :(

Thanks to Google.com (http://www.google.com/), I found a few links to additional information on the Muscovy Duck and it's impact on Florida...
Deltona newspaper article (March, 2001) (http://www.n-jcenter.com/2001/Mar/21/WVOL2.htm).

Univ of Florida Extension Service article. (http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_UW015)

Biscayne Bay campus sign (with pix) (http://www.cs.fiu.edu/~tho01/idh/sign.duck.html).

Seems as if the Muscovy was not ever native to Florida, and is therefor considered a domestic pest when it is allowed to multiply and begins to frequent suburban yards and waterways.

Many Floridians must look upon the Muscovy in the same way that some New Yorkers view the common Pigeon.

It is sad. I wonder if the ducks have any other predator besides humans. Maybe alligators?

I am just wondering if they aren't being killed for sport, but for over population? They do that when the Channel Islands (off the coast of southern CA) are overrun with Goats (?? I think they are goats). Maybe I missed it, are they being killed for fun, to be mean, or for overpopulation? The article that Phred linked to said they were relocated to a farm. I think that with people not feeding them, maybe it'll help the whole situation.

What do you guys think? That is really sad they are capturing them for alligator food. Hey, do they kill alligators in Florida for being a nuisance?

OMG I had no idea this was happening

I have a soft spot for muscovy ducks. My first duck was a muscovy, he escaped from the sale barn and I found him in my backyard. I loved that little guy. I was just a young kid and I raised him like a dog. I have had many since but none was a special as Mr. D

Im going to read on now

Arent muscovies so beautiful? :) Im glad someone else out there has owned them and loves them. I have a male muscovy and he is so sweet! He is one of those 'people friendly ducks' (I think its cuz I had him since he was a few weeks old) cuz he comes huffing and puffing along as fast as he can whenever he sees me so he can 'play' with me--their version of playing is nipping at ur legs  but I love him to death and wouldnt give him up for anything. We are trying real hard to save these ducks but we need people to send in letters saying how much they care about these ducks, then we can show them to the government so they can make a law that protects them.
