Drowning toddler saved when faithful dog alerts parent

VANCOUVER, Wash. - One smart dog is going to get a lot of extra treats, probably for a long time to come.

Ron Lobey says his 2-year-old black lab, named 'Maddie', began to make a "weird bark" rather than obey a command to come, alerting him to the location of his two-year-old son, Sammy, who had wandered off and fallen into a pond. When Lobey discovered the boy, he was face-up, but still under water.

Lobey pulled his son from the water and performed CPR, which revived the boy. He has completely recovered.

Emergency crews who responded to the scene think Maddie did more than just alert his master to the boy's location. When the toddler was found, he was face-up, which is extremely rare.

The current theory is that Maddie tried to pull the boy from the pond, turning him over.

Lobey got Maddie as a puppy at the same time his son was born two years ago.

"She helped us save our baby's life" the grateful father added as Maddie trolled the grounds of the family home, keeping an eye on Sammy who was playing nearby.
