Welcome to PT Painter!!!!

I was driving out to my friends house late last night and there was a painter turtle in the road so I jumped out and took it down near the pond and way away from the road!! The people behind me probably thought I was crazy!!! :D

Yup Speedy is a snapping turtle. I asked the pet store owners who are selling snappers and they told me its alright to own a snapper in our area.:D

Omg, lol! That would freak me out---turtles get pretty big too. I know there is one other person on here with a snapper and its huge. Sea turtles get giantic thought.

Thanks for the compliments everybody:D:D

Its baby snapper season around here. I found a hatchling the other night and brought him down to the water. He was so dried out he wouldn't have made it the rest of the way on his own,he had given up and was just laying their. He recovered quickly once in the water though. Cute lttle thing the size of a quarter. I hope you have a place for him when he's older. They live a long time and in a year or two he'll be tryin to take of fingers. I've learned not to bring hatchlings home anymore when I was young. They don't become tame animals.

We aren't allowed turtles here as pets..or turtles here in general? I don;t know why, but I wish we could! They look like interesting pets!

Cute pics!

I have a few ?'s ont he snapper as not too many people keep them as pets. lol I did have a friend who had one, but she gave him up when he got about the size of speedy. She didn't want to deal with the possibility of getting injure when it got bigger.
You still have the snapper I see. Are you going to keep him forever? What will you do with him when he gets big? They can get nasty. Are they legal to keep? What do they eat?

I plan on keeping him for quite awhile. Of course if we have problems when he gets bigger and things do not work out we will probably have to set him free. They are leagal to keep where I live, you can even purchase them in the pet store. Right now we are feeding ours turtle bites which can be purchased at Wal-Mart and pet stores. But I have fed him worms and when he gets a little bigger I'll probably feed him minnows or new born mice so that he gets his source of protein. There is somebody on here, I can not remember who, and they have a snapper that is pretty big. They said that it gets along with their dogs and doesnt snap them. I am hoping if we continue to play with him he wont be so mean. What do you think?

*swoon* I love, love, love turtles with a passion! I grew up in Southern Missouri and the one thing I miss up here more than ANYTHING is all the turtles that were down there. There were 3 different kinds of box turtles and many, many water turtles, and we even had the rare and endangered alligator snapping turtles. I never saw one in the wild that I know of but they had one in a huge aquarium at the Nature Center there.

I just can't get enough of seeing them and watching them. I hope to perhaps have a pet turtle at some point once I'm able to set up a proper home for one. Thanks so much for sharing these!
