Police hand out petrol vouchers to good drivers
Russian police are handing out free petrol vouchers to careful drivers instead of fines to bad ones.
The tactic is part of a campaign to try to cut down on accidents involving cars hitting pedestrians.
Moscow traffic police launched the new road safety and awareness campaign called Safe Crossing.
They say particularly careful drivers can be given vouchers for up to £1,500 worth of petrol.
Police say they want to stop people driving aggressively and have more regard for pedestrians.
Official statistics show that of the 24,000 traffic accidents occurred over the past year, 38% involved drivers hitting pedestrians.
That figure rose to 54% for the 3,700 road accidents recorded in the first four months of this year.
