:(

Pet Talk PRAYERS are *Urgently Needed* for Johanna's Sister Jessica,
Bro-in-Law Rob, and their New Baby *Samantha* ...

Johann just called me and asked that I post this very sad news:

Jessica and Rob are in Cincinnati Children's Hospital with Baby Samantha -
the little Girl from China that they recently Adopted ...

Baby Samantha was diagnosed early this morning with
:( *Bacterial Meningitis* :(
a very serious and life-threatening disease.

Johanna asks for Prayers from her Pet Talk Family -
and I assured her we're round up a LOT of Prayers
for Samantha, Jessica and Rob ...
and we shouldn't forget to include Aunt Johanna and GranMom Lillycat.

Please light up the Prayer Candles, and
gather the FurKids for a Paw-Crossing -
Baby Samantha, Jessica, and Robb will appreciate your Help.

Please God - send Your Love and Help to lil Samantha.

Johanna was leaving for the Hospital -
the Family will maintain a round-the-clock vigil with Samantha.

Joh called off work for the rest of the week to assist with
covering the Hospital - and doesn't have her puter at home with her -
it may be a day or two before she runs by the office to get it.
And she's not allowed to use her cell phone near the Hospital.

She'll check in with news on Samantha when she can.

PRAYERS for Samantha - please!

My own daughter was diagnosed with Meningitis many years ago and survived. 7 days in solitary intensive care at Washingtons Childrens Hospital. It was the most desolate week of my life and my heart is heavy just remembering it. My prayers and thoughts are with the family and wish I could send strength to baby Samantha.

Johanna,

I am holding you and your family tight in my thoughts and prayers. Laurie's experience is encouraging. Samantha must be a blessing to her parents. I know your family will have a strong presence in the hospital, and that might be what saves her. Keep the good thoughts flowing and give your sister our love.

Get you're mouse-pens out Folks ~

It's time to SEND some E-Cards to Baby Samantha and
her Mom and Dad (Jessica and Rob)!!

She's in Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center,
and they *HAVE* an E-Card program where they receive, print, and
Deliver E-Cards sent to patients via the Internet.

Here's the Opening Page of the CCH "E-Card" >>>

Opening Page - Cinci Children's Hosp E-Cards (https://secure.cchmc.org/gbl_ecard/select.asp)

On the Opening Page, SELECT by *clicking* on one of the 10 cards offered -
the ones with the Blank White Areas can be personalized with a >SHORT<
message in the box at the TOP of the next page.

Page Two:
Fill in the >short< message for the "front" of the card if the card has
a blank area;

Scroll down and SELECT #1 = Children's Hospital ...
*DOT* the circle on the "Room Number Line"; then fill in B-631
for her room number;

*Click* the arrow in the "Building Box"; then *click* HighLite the choice
"Hospital Tower (HR)"

Fill in "Patient's Name as Samantha Potts

Leave the "e-mail address" BLANK!

Continue down to the "Message Box" -
where you can write in a long message and sign your name and/or
give your "Pet Talk Name".

Last is your REAL NAME - they may NOT deliver if the "Your Name" box isn't
filled in with what the Staff feels IS a Real Name.
Probably NOT the place to fill in "Fluffie da Kat"! ;)

Next, Hit the "Preview" button to look it over;
"Edit" or "SEND" is the last step.

Girl I talked to says Printing and Delivering these E-Cards is a TOP Priority -
and they *FIND* the Patient if they are transferred to another room!

OK ~ Let's all get *bizzie* and send off some E-Cards
to Baby Samantha, Jessica, and Rob!! :D

THANKS!! :D

I wish I could tell you I have good news to report on Sammy. I do not. Things are just as dire as they were last night. Sammy is sedated on morphine, is in kidney failure, and will begin dialysis today. She is intubated, on a ventilator, and more medical stuff that I can't even begin to fathom. She is in PICU (ped ICU), and will be having a surgery tonight to relieve the pressure in her legs, or she runs the risk of losing them. Her kidneys won't function, so, she is heavily swollen with fluids. Her blood pressure has become more stable, and the staff indicated THAT she survived the night is a teeny, tiny ray of hope. There is no prognosis, the efforts are simply to save her right now.

It couldn't be more worse, and my heart is so broken for Sammy, my sister and brother in law. All this way from China, for a chance at a much better life, and then to have this happen.

Please continue the prayers. Please.

I just keep thinking that I want her to know, when she is a young woman, healthy and happy, that she has had the heart and soul of a group of wonderful people behind her and that love and care for her, and are trying to push her little strength to its max. One day I want her Mom & Dad, or maybe Aunt Johanna to be able to read these thoughts to her while she's getting ready for college. Just an idle hopeful thought.

Hey everyone...I have a bit of a 'good' :D uppiedate!!!

Johanna's sister, Jenna (birdangel on PT), just sent me an email with an update on Baby Samantha. She said she talked to Johanna this morning, and it seems Samantha is improving. She said the doctors are now seeing signs that she may recover, and they're amazed and hopeful. They feel that Divine Intervention has occurred several times for Samantha, during times when they almost lost her.

I know God is standing there, right beside this sweet child, and listening to our prayers. Its good news that she has made it through all these days, and that she's finally improving. Let's all continue to pray and pray, sincerely. May God answer us, and restore Baby Samantha's health completely.

I just got back from the hospital. Sammy is still 'stable', but, critical. She didn't get any worse during the day, for which I am thankful. But, she didn't get 'better' either. Her heart rate is at 150-155, down from over 200. 'Normal' is 100-120. So, there is alot of room to come down. Again, it isn't 200 anymore. The small glimmer of hope experienced this morning seems gone now, 12 hours later. I suppose the roller coaster is just getting started. I guess any way you look at 'critical' it is still critical.

Apparently, there is a stage II to this disease, and it seems that Sammy is entering into it, sadly. While the medical team anticipated this, and is as prepared as they can be, obviously, it is distressing to us. It will do some damage to this little girl.

I just don't know what to say. Please continue to pray for Sammy, my sister Jessica, and her husband Rob. This is just too much to handle.

I forgot to tell you that Jessica is receiving the e-cards, and does appreciate them. Can I ask that you still send them, with whatever positive message you can put in there?

Sammy spiked a fever last night, and her heart rate went back up into the 200's :( . My sister said it is back down to 180, but, still 30 beats higher than yesterday. The doctor said with the ventilator, and the incisions on the limbs to facilitate bleeding of fluids, this is to be expected. It might mean she will get worse, before she gets better. She HAS to get better.

Please pray for Sammy.

Thank you,

I think I was too sad to post after yesterday's visit. The doctor seems to think Sammy will lose both her hands and her feet. He said the chances are probable. What heavy, heavy news, and such a blow for my sister. She said, "It isn't me that I care about, I will always care for Sammy. It is Sammy that I care for, as she will remember that she had feet and hands...".

I pushed the doctor to tell me that he couldn't say for sure that she would lose these limbs, and he said it was true, he couldn't say for sure.

Please, God, don't do this to this tiny child. Please.

I know that we all pray in different ways, but my MIL put together the following prayer (Instead of praying about the problem, we must ask for the outcome we want).....

Heavenly Father, your word says that whatsoever we ask in Jesus' name You will give it, and also Your Word says that where two or more agree on anything, You will give it to them, so I thank you Lord that a multitude of people are praying for Samatha, and by Faith we know that she is healed, and has perfect health, and Father Your promises do not fail, this we pray in the name of Jesus.

I don't quite remember seeing a post by Johanna announcing Sammie's arrival in the family, but...Johanna and I exchanged several emails during that very exciting time, and I know Jessica went to China to adopt Samantha some time in December...so its been around 5 months now.

Little Sammie, I continue to pray for you. Please get better soon.

Dear God, You are the most Merciful, the most Compassionate. The lives and health of all of us are in none but Your Hands. It is in Your mercy and grace that we enjoy good health. Only You have the power to turn an illness into good health. In Your mercy and grace, Dear God, we ask you to please restore little Samantha's health. Please have mercy on this little girl, and on her family. Please God, please, protect Samantha's limbs, and please restore her health completely. Grant strength and patience to her family, and please shower all your love and mercy on them at this difficult time. Dear God, please, forgive us for our mistakes, and accept our prayers. Amen.

Hi. It is Cataholic, under mom's name.

I just got back from the hospital. Jessica and Rob left to go home for a few hours- they live about an hour away. They have two other children (Rob's from a previous marriage) 3 dogs and 3 cats. So, they are pulled in so many directions, but, obviously, Sammy is their top priority. I volunteered to sit with Sammy while both parents were gone.

Sammy really had a great day- stability wise. Her 'numbers' are where the doctors want them to be, though sometimes she is medicated to get them there. Most importantly, her BP is stable. She will be on a ventilator for several weeks. Because of the open wounds (for drainage) and the vent tube, she is 'at risk' for infection. The doctor told my sister last night that he felt she was past the most critical part of the infection, and now it is just recovery from the damage done, the possiblility of limb loss, organ failure, burn treatment (see below), and the unknown. BUT, the doctor thought she was past the critical point! And, she is alive!

We are very blessed here in Cincinnati. Not only do we have Cincinnati Children's Hospital (one of the world's best pediatric facilities), but, we also have a Shriners Burn Hospital right next store! The doctor said to Jessica, "not next week, but, **maybe** the week after that, Sammy will be moved to Shriners for treatment". That is the first time someone has uttered a positive message, frankly.

She is not out of the woods. Not by a long shot, but, since we have had so much despairing news, I want to celebrate the positive news.

Please, keep the prayers coming along!! Please, cross post across the world, I would be the most appreciative~!!

Sammy turned 2 on March 1, 2005. She was adopted, and brought home from an orphanage in China a few days before Christmas. She was just beginning to speak a few words of English. She loves the Wiggles (why, I don't know :)), loves to eat!! and, could walk up and down steps all day long if you let her. She is my sister's first child, and Jessica just celebrated her first Mother's Day.

Sammy has to get well! Thanks for your continued prayers. We are looking to set up a web site on Children's web page on Monday. I will update you all tomorrow.

Good night, thank God, and see you in the morning.

I was at the hospital this morning for a few minutes. Sam looks better, which is very relative to what she looked like at the worst. She is still off of the BP medicene. She might be slightly less swollen in the face. Sadly, her limbs just don't look so good. While no one is saying anything for sure, it just doesn't look promising. While I am ever so thankful Sammy is alive today, I would still like to pray that God spares her limbs, somehow, someway.

There is talk about a CAT scan later this week, assuming she remains stable. This will give some insight into potential brain damage.

This is just so unfair. So, so unfair. :(

Monday night update- I saw Sammy again after work, and she looks a little better, relatively speaking. They are able to drain off more fluids, which decreases the swelling. They started her on some 'food' via a g-tube, and as of this morning, it was well tolerated, and they are increasing the amount. And, she produced a BM- which means her bowels are working. One more organ to check off the list. (Prior to this, she was given nutrition through an IV).Also, when I talked to my sister this morning (I haven't been to the hospital yet), she said Sammy was going to be given a longer acting sedative, as she was getting too reactive to things- which is a good sign! There have been some positive signs relating to her lungs- she is coughing a little bit, and there is less fluid in them. Still doing well with heart rate and blood pressure.

So, the prayers are working, and I am still holding out for a miracle as to her limbs. I will update you when I can.

My sister commented last night that she received some more PT emails- so, thanks for sending them, and keep it up!

These are the entries from the Carepage, for those of you that can't make it over there. I will post updates as they are given.

This is the first entry, from May 17, 2005:

Hello, everyone. As most of you know, it's been a long, nightmarish week here at Children's ICU. The miracle is that Sam is still with us, and is making small improvements each day. I'll begin this with a little background, then will try to update as often as I can; please feel free to leave messages. The support of our family and friends means so much to us.

Background: After enjoying a wonderful first Mother's Day, Sam had an uneventful Sunday evening; she skipped her nap, and fell right to sleep that night after a bath. She'd had a cold since earlier in the week, w/an occasional low-grade fever and runny nose. Nothing major. I called the ped's office a couple times, but they assured me that it was going around, all the kids had it, etc., etc. Monday morning was a different story; she had a high fever, was vomiting, and was lethargic. In short, she wasn't herself at all. Ped's office still said these were the kinds of symptoms kids were having--which was, and still is, true--but we'd never seen Sam like this, and we took her to Mercy Clermont's ER. They brought down her fever, and tested for a couple things, but found nothing--but then a small rash started to develop. It was just a few small marks in a couple places. We also found out the week before that Sam has a platelet disorder, and this concerned the ER doc since it's a rare disorder. He decided to have her admitted to Children's, and we arrived in their ER early that evening. Immediately, they knew something was wrong--the rash had worsened, and they suspected it was meningitis. They told us it was unlikely she'd survive the night, but luckily, she's strong, has tons of folks praying for her, and is under the care of excellent doctors. The diagnosis: meningocoxxemia, w/purpura fulminans. (As many times as I've seen the words written down now, I continue to screw up the spelling, but those are close.) She has the neiserria form of meningitis, which is the most serious. About 20% of us carry the bacteria in our noses or throats, and suffer no ill effects from it. Unfortunately, it enters the bloodstream of some--Sam being one--and causes rapid, aggressive infection and damage. There is no rhyme nor reason--simple bad luck dictated this. It's unrelated to Sam's albinism or platelet disorder.

Moving on to today: the doctors and nurses are amazed that Sam is still w/us, and continuing to make small strides. She's on dialysis (though they hope the kidneys will come back), a feeding tube (she had a BM, which is a good sign), as well as a breathing tube, and she's been receiving blood products. They are trying to wean her from her various tubes--her lung and heart function is good, her bp is stable, and though she hasn't had a CAT scan yet, she grimaces, flinches, coughs and moves her eyes a lot, and they have every reason to believe the brain is okay. They are removing fluids from her body, so the swelling is starting to go down, and a doctor from Shriner's (pretty much next door) is coming to see her tomorrow; if all continues to go well, she will be transferred there, so they can deal with the effects on the skin and limbs. There have been so many doctors and so much information, and I'm likely leaving some things out, but that's the gist of where we are right now.

Thanks, everyone, for your prayers, support, phone calls, visits--we are indeed blessed w/family and friends. Keep Sammy in your prayers, as we have a long road ahead of us. She's such a strong little girl and has been through so much in her short life.

Here is the second entry, from May 18, 2005:

Another day has passed, and Sam is still pretty stable. Two docs from Shriner's made it over last night; they couldn't say a whole lot at this point, as they'll have to look her over in more detail in the OR, as soon as she can be moved. At this point, her upper extremities look okay; her feet don't look so great. A guesstimate as far as her transfer would be maybe late next week. They are talking about wanting to do a few procedures sometime this week, but they're still debating, and all they've done today so far is put in a new feeding tube. They are also cleaning & treating her skin a couple times a day. She's coming to a bit, and makes a lot of faces when they're doing anything to her; her eyes open a little here and there, and she did make a little cry yesterday, but she's still heavily sedated, and they assure me the pain is under control. She moves her head, as well as her arms, so we definitely know she's in there! One of the nurses put her hair in pig tails, and w/a lot of the swelling down, she's resembling our baby girl again. Her white cell count was up yesterday, but they're not sure why yet; I haven't heard anything new about that today, but am praying a new infection won't set in--that's the last thing we need right now. We're also waiting for her kidneys to start doing their thing again. So, it's a lot of waiting, and a lot more hoping and praying. Thanks, everyone, for your prayers and thoughts--it's nice to see so many names, both of folks I know and folks I don't. Sam can use all the prayers she can get!

First let me say what a great site the hospital has. I joined and that picture of the two of them is precious. I'm still continually thinking of her and hope things keep going her way.

From FRIDAY MAY 20, 2005

Sam's vitals continue to be strong, and she's much more alert now--her eyes open and she looks around, and tries to move. She also responds to our voices. She is still on pretty heavy sedation and pain relievers, so she should be comfortable, but even on all the , she still manages to wake up here and there, though not completely. It's both a comfort and a concern to us; we love to see her open her eyes, and it's a good sign neurologically that she's doing all that, but at the same time, we to think she might be feeling any pain at all, even occasionally. She may be transferred to Shriner's today; the doctors at both places have been discussing it, weighing all the pros and cons, and wading through the various politics involved. Sam's case is fairly complicated, so it's not an easy decision, but everyone feels Shriner's has the expertise needed to deal with the most pressing concern right now, which is her skin/limbs. She's still on dialysis, but can continue that there, as the kidney team can consult at Shriner's as well. Shriner's is state-of-the-art, and can offer Sam her best chance at rehabilitation. I just spoke to some of her drs. minutes ago, and they think she should be transferred asap, so we'll see. The longer we wait on dealing w/the skin issue, the greater the chance of another infection, so time is of the essence. I will post again when she's moved; please continue to pray for her, as she still has a long journey ahead. Thanks so much, everyone, for all your kind thoughts and prayers. I know that Sam can feel how much she is loved.

I just have to say, when Mayor Karen put her prayer pawtrol (and specially her Bell Ringers) on the job, my daughter-in-laws' condition changed for the very much better. Don't mean to put anything on you, my friend Karen ... but sometimes one just has to believe. And I do.

OMG! :(:( Major sadness. :(:( I am so sorry to hear this. What a dreadful disease to take a little girls' legs. God be with you all, and help you all to be strong. Remember that even with this tragedy, Samantha is still alive and with you, and THAT is what is the most important.

Friday evening,
It is with an incredibly heavy heart I post the following:

We are now at Shriner's, and Sam is set up in her new ICU room. She has been thoroughly examined by their experts. We are saddened to report that in order to save Sam and keep infection from setting in, they have to remove all dead tissue; unfortunately, this means they have to amputate both legs from the knee down, as the tissue/muscle, etc. is dead. Even though we were warned of this possibility/eventual probability, we are numb with grief, and this is why we haven't accepted any visitors today. I think, while at Children's, we stayed focused solely on Sam's survival, and now we are faced with the harsher realities, and words can't adequately describe the heartache we are feeling tonight. We just ask for a little time to be with each other, and support each other through this. Surgery is set for 9:15 tomorrow morning. Please continue to hold Sam close to your heart. I will update again after surgery.

I cannot imagine why God has chosen to test your family in such a way. It is extremely difficult to even be able to write you just a few words of encouragement right now.

My heart goes out to each and every one of you.

The only thing I can think of is that Samantha is going to make you all so proud....................and she has many gifts and lessons she will give to your family.

In the meantime, I will continue to pray - pray for everyone in Samantha's family - to bond together in love for this child.

I am so very very saddened to hear this news, that that joyful, precious little girl must lose her legs :( :(. My prayers will be with Samantha and the whole family, tonight and tomorrow especially.

I know these words probably sound hollow, but I do know they've made amazing advancements as far as prosthetic limbs go, though I do not know what all is involved in that. I do remember seeing people who seemed to walk just as well as you or I would. I know these types of thoughts are pitiful consolation at best right now. I just cannot imagine what you all are going through at this moment. :( I just can't bear to give up the hope that she will be able to still walk at some point in the future. I do think it's possible with the medical advances that have been made.

There was a new update this morning to the Carepages, and Sammy is headed back to Children's after a bad night:

May 21, 2005 at 12:08 PM EDT

**********

Plans have changed, and we are on our way back to Children's. Sam ran a high fever all thru the night--over 104--and was having chills/seizures, heart rate up over 200, etc. They wanted to do surgery anyway, but I refused to consent, and asked them to transfer her back to Children's. They are at least able to make her comfortable over there, and I have much more faith in their acute care abilities there. We are distraught w/the direction things are taking here, and after much discussion, this is what we've decided. We don't know what will happen from here. Sam seems to be suffering right now, and we have grave concerns about her quality of life, and can't seem to reach any kind of agreement w/the medical personnel here, and there have already been heated arguments. We just don't have the trust and faith that we had at Children's. I will update again later; we have lots to discuss w/the doctors at Children's, so we ask, for the time being, that no one visit until we've had time to take care of things there. Thank you for your continued prayers.
Jessica

Still praying for little Sammy. I know God is taking care of her, and that she, along with her family, will get through this trial in life. Stay strong Little Sammy!

Just a poem I came across that I wanted to share...

GOD Knows Best

God knows what is best for us
So why should we complain
We always want the sunshine
But He knows there must be rain.
We always want laughter
and the merriment of cheer
but our hearts will lose
their tenderness
If we never shed a tear.

GOD tests us often
with suffering and sorrow
He tests us not to punish us
but to help us meet tomorrow.
For growing trees are strengthened
if they can withstand the storm
and the sharpness of the chisel
gave the marble its grace and form.

GOD tests us often
and for every pain
He gives us,
provided we are patient
Is followed by rich gain
So whenever we feel that
everything is going wrong
Remember it is just GOD'S way,
to make our spirit strong.
