I am an asthmatic, and have been since I was 5. I never even once considered trying it, it just seemed like slow suicide to me.

actually the last time I had it in my mouth was when I was seven years old! I coughed and never liking it.

I also get upset if someone smokes in front of me because I react to it EASILY, headaches :(

Friend as a driver: Do you mind if I smoke?
Gina as a passenger: Do you mind if I die?

I always use this quote  I hate smoking. :( makes me sad..

That's probably a big reason why I've never smoked, not even 1 puff in my whole life. My sister has asthma. My grandma (who has now passed away do to cancer from smoking) who lived less then 2 miles down the road from us only came to see us a couple times a year, Christmas and birthdays basically. We weren't allowed to go to her house because my sister always got really sick there. Yet my grandma couldn't put down a cigarette long enough to come see us more than a couple times a year.

Where I live it is "Smoke Free" in that if you go out to any public place, you have to smoke in the designated smoking room which is closed off from the rest of the place. I love it, cause if you go out to eat you don't have to worry about smelling smoke etc.

Anywhere have this?

Nope. I can't have any sort of smoke around me -- it gives me a bad headache. I even have to hold my breath when cars go by me because the smoke just makes me sick.

I had my first cigarette when I was three LOL. My parents both smoked, so I thought it was cool. I was out on the patio with my dad (I still remember this), and I asked him for a smoke. He said "You won't like it." I told him I would. He lit a smoke and gave it to me. I think he expected me to inhale or burn myself and learn my lesson -- but I didn't. I put it in my mouth. I wasn't sure what to do with it. It was boring, so I gave it back to him. Haven't wanted to smoke since. ;)

I make it a habit to NOT smoke around those who don't, even around those who do I stand far away as I don't want them breathing smoke in. I guess I just have more respect than other smokers do. Being a smoker myself, I still hate when people blow it into my face.

I have a goal to quit smoking by July. :)

When I was 23, I gave in to peer pressure and took up light smoking. That is, one pack would last me 2 weeks and that's when the cost of 55 cents a pack. I was still living at home and didn't want my parents to know so I did all the common things....breath fresheners, etc.

That "stage" only lasted about 6 months because at that time I met "Al" and he literally said...choose between me or the cigarettes. That was in 1975 and I've never picked up another cigarette since.

I now work for the Cancer Society and sometimes when smokers here that, they shy away, like they expect me to give them a lecture or something. I hate it when that happens.

Smoking is choice and I have NO right to judge those that do smoke. I have some very good friends who smoke and I love them to bits.

My only rule is no smoking in my home (not even on the deck) or in my car.

NO!!! I am probably the only kid in my high school who has not smoked a cigarette (or a joint for that matter). I will NEVER take a puff, it is so disgusting, I couldn't even imagine me smoking. My mom was a heavy smoker when I was little. All I remember is the house being dark and dingy with smoke, everything smokey, yellow and stinky, dry skin and hair- it was repulsive.

Plus, I have horrible second-hand asthma (since my mom smoked whilst she was pregnant), if I took a puff it would probably a horrible asthma attack. Cigarette smoke also gives me HORRIBLE migranes if I am around it for too long.

I refuse to date a smoker too...kissing an ashtray is not my thing....

I have never tried it and I dont plan on it. I cant stand second hand smoke and like Karen said its like slow sucicide, I believe. I also highly encourage anyone who does smoke to do anything to quit.

I definately wish you luck! It's a hard and nasty habit to break. You've just got to decide you REALLY want quit to or it will never work.
My Mark was having some problems due to smoking (of course he never though it was actually the smoking that was causing his problems) but now that he's quit he feels so much better and so much healthier (not to say that he doesn't still want a cigarette now:o).

Again, GOOD LUCK Jadapit...I know you both can do it!!

It seems you're in good company on the quit smoking bandwagon:

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa - A South African zoo wants a chimpanzee to quit smoking cold turkey.

Keepers say Charlie the chimpanzee picked up the habit from visitors at the Bloemfontein Zoo who sometimes toss him cigarettes.

"It looks funny to see a chimp smoking," a zoo spokesman said, but Charlie's trick could cost him his health.

The zoo is asking people to stop tossing cigarettes and contributing to the chimp's habit.

A zoo official says Charlie "acts like a naughty schoolboy" and hides his cigarettes when workers are around.

I've never smoked and I never will. I think it's a gross and disgusting habit and I'm confident when I say I will never pick up on that habit. My dad smokes, not as much as he used to, and he tries not to around me.. he knows how sick it makes me. I have asthma that flares up, but what's worse is cigarette smoke triggers my optic migraines. So yeh, never have and never will.

Haven't had a cig since 11/9/1987. Before that I had smoked for 18 years. Initially I quit because my docs told me I was showing early signs of emphysema. That scared me into quitting and I've stayed quit. DO NOT START! It is NOT fun or easy to quit, although staying quit is easy for me now.

Put me in the "used to smoke, but quit" catagory! I smoked fron 1962 to January 31, 1982. I did it the toughest way possible, cold turkey. My lungs have been smoke-free for 23 years!

Congrats to those of you who have smoked and quit! It's incredibly difficult from what I understand. Nicotine is as addictive as heroin! And props to those of you who have never smoked and say you never will! That's great!:D
Unfortunately, I do smoke and have since I was ~19. I started in college and of course, now it's a habit. To be completely honest, I enjoy smoking. I look forward to having a cigarette after work or if I'm having a glass of wine or a beer. Both my parents smoked when I was younger. My father still smokes. My mother quit cold turkey and this was back in the days when you could smoke in the office. All her co-workers were supposed to quit the same day and when she got to work, they were all smoking!!! She was so mad that she quit anyway to spite them!!! What a woman!! :D Incredible willpower! (She was diagnosed with cancer a year to the day later and she jokes that she got the cancer from stress, she says when she quit smoking, her stress levels went through the roof!! She's fine now by the way, a year of chemo but she's officially cured now!)
Audrey, in NY and California you can't smoke in any buildings. In NJ where I am now, you still can smoke in most restaurants and bars but many places have glass partitions separating smoking and non-smoking sections. I'm old school though, even if I didn't smoke, others can still smoke in my house. I feel it's a respect thing, they are my guests and if they smoke, I want them to feel welcome, so smoke away....I can Febreze later :D

I did too. It was fun and not something I ever thought I could live without.

I still miss it sometimes...like when we were in Vegas and it seems that everyone in the casinos was smoking. Aww man!

For me quitting was easy, because I planned to have my child, and that was far more important to me than anything else, but really I think the simple fact is I Never really enjoyed smoking, it was just a bad habit and an addiction, I quit cold turkey as well, and I have never regretted giving up,or had any desire to return to it,the worst part of me is watching my son smoke, he is also an asthmatic ,it worries me sick., he started due to his peers smoking like a lot of us, myself included, because neither of us smoke here.,my husband did when I met him and gave up almost straight away after we were married, he came from a family of smokers.

It is extremely difficult for some to give up and I wish you well and success in doing so.:)

P.S NZ has just implemented new laws, no smoking in any of our bars, clubs, pubs or restaurants anymore, most work places have been smokefree for sometime, but now it is smokefree everywhere.

I grew up in a house of smokers and never thought a thing of it. I used to pick up my father's discarded butts and try to smoke them. My sister tattled on me and I got in trouble. Fast forward to our teenage years. My sister became a chain smoker and continues to this day despite many health problems. I never began smoking and am very thankful for that.

Everyone I know that smokes, hates it and is trying to quit.

I realized that I am very biased towards smokers. Whenever I see someone smoking I assume that they are less educated and less intelligent than the average person. And I think worse of women than men.

We just returned from a family funeral in Tulsa. Most of my husband's relatives smoke and it was very hard to be around. I'm still coughing trying to clear my lungs. I noticed that the relatives that smoked the most, complained that they had the least money. When we calculated that they probably spend over $3000 a year on cigarettes, it was quite shocking.
