Simba gets a bath every wednesday and every saturday. Why? bvecause i cannot stand a stinky boy doggie!!!!! sometimes i slip and dont have time to give him one twice a week but i make sure he gets atleast one a week. Its just that he lays outside so much in the dirty and sand it sickens me to know he brings all of that dirt into my house and on to my bed. Also i cant stand to watch him itch himself to the point were he has a big cut in his ear and wont let anyone touch his ear. He has a cut in his ear right now and he is in so much pain he has had for a long time for like a month because we ran out of dog shmpoo so he didnt ge tlike 2 of his baths and he started scrathing and itching reall bad and cut his ear open. His ear is all nasty now and he will only let me touch his ears and look at them.

That's the difference between cats and dogs. My cat bathes every day. He takes care of it himself and the only thing that smells is his litter box unless I change it regularly.

Westie,

I hear what ya saying. There's nothing worse than going over to a friends house and the only smell you can focus on is their stinking dog. Loveable, but stinky.

But the poll only asks if you bathe your pet. People have many different pets that need no bathing, only attention, food, water and love.

I bath my dogs about three times a month. They are short haired dogs and stay pretty clean. They also love to play in the water hole wich is clean so they pretty much keep themselves clean. I also brush them every evening (before they come in for the night) with the glove brush and it takes the sand off them.

I heard somewhere that to much bathing takes the natural oils out of the skin and if maks them dry and itchy ?????

I gave Charlie (cat) a bath just as soon as the weather was warm enough. I used to bathe my first cat, Sydney, and I'm doing the same with Charlie. I have a friend who attacks me every time I mention that Charlie needs a bath. She tells me, "There is no reason to bathe a cat...they don't smell!!" It's true, cats don't smell, but Charlie gets pretty dingy sometimes, and after a bath he looks and smells so nice. Plus, when it's really warm he seems so refreshed after his bath.
I realize that it's not really necessary, but does anyone object to bathing a cat?

I don't object to bathing a cat. But how did you ever get him to let you? My cat loves water, loves to try and catch streams of water in his mouth, but when it comes to the tub, he will only sit by it, if I try and inch him into it, he jumps right out, even if there is water or not. Only occassionally does he go in and lick the tub if it is wet.

We bathe our two dogs every other week, we use puppy shampoo even though they are over two years old. The reason for that is my husband was using flea shampoo and it got into Perrys eye and burned it. We had to take him to the Vet and put medication in his eye for quite a while. It did heal and he is fine now.
Too much bathing will dry the skin. We also brush them every day and we feed them canned Natures Receipe Lamb and Rice in the morning and dry lamb and rice in the afternoon and it keeps their coat very nice and shiny.

I get Reece groomed every 4-6 weeks. Sometimes inbetween groomings I'll give him a bath if he needs it though. I want to start grooming him myself but don't have the supplies or the know-how yet.

Ben,
As with anything you want your cat to get used to, you have to start them young. Charlie will meow a few protests for the first few seconds, then he just stands there and lets me...I guess he figures he might as well not give me a hard time so that we can just get it over with. I bathe him very quickly, so it's over in just a few minutes.
Sydney was a little less patient, and if I didn't have a good hold on him, he would fly out of the tub and get kitty shampoo all over the floor!

Daisy gets her baths usually every month if not twice a month, and whenever else it's needed in a stink emergency! I'd do it more, but she's a big hound now, and she hates water! So it's quite the chore. But she needs those baths. She gets so dirty, being low to the ground, and if she doesn't get her monthly bath she smells a bit... houndish. Ilovehounds, you know the smell? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif But speaking of that... I saw on TV a thing saying all hounds smell awful... this is untrue if you BATHE them!

Bella has had 2 baths so far and we've had her two months. She is due for another one this weekend, complete with clipping/grooming and "pedicure." http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif This is the life of a poodle whether they like it or not. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

The cats have never been bathed although I would love to bathe Trevor. He is 8 years old and somehow I think that after being alive 8 years it's time for a bath. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif I have thought about it but so far haven't gotten up the nerve. Andy loves water but only when it is running out of the tap. I think he would totally freak out in the tub.

I used to bathe my dogs once a week. Jeffrey developed dry skin and was constantly itching. On the advice of my vet, I switched shampoos (Hy-Lyte, with essential fatty acids: fantastic!) and I only bathe them when they smell ( about once a month or two). I was told by my vet that frequent baths stops the natural oils in their skin and causes dry skin. If you brush or comb their fur against the natural growth and you see flakes (almost like dandruff)their skin is dry.

Here's some tips for bathing your dog from www.ferretstore.com (http://www.ferretstore.com) I never have problems with Jeffrey is an angel when taking a bath. Bandit hates it, as most Pugs do.

Before you fill the tub, make sure you have the following supplies: a bucket, a shower mat (to keep him from slipping), shampoo and conditioner (consult your veterinarian), towels, a blow dryer and a dog brush. Having everything together and organized will make bath time so much easier.

Get the bathroom ready. Shut all windows and close all air ducts. You don’t want your dog to get a chill. Lay extra towels on the floor for quick clean up, and put the shower mat in the tub.

Bring your dog into the bathroom, and shut the door. Most likely he’ll want to escape and hide under the bed.

Fill the tub with 3-4 inches of warm water. Remember, if it’s too warm for you, it’s definitely too warm for your dog.

Put the dog in the tub. Keep a firm hold and use reassuring words to calm him.

Take the bucket and wet the dog from the head to tail. Be careful not to get water in his eyes or ears.

Apply a small amount of dog shampoo to the top of the head and work your way down. Remember to stay away from the eyes and ears.

Drain the tub and run the water again making sure it’s lukewarm.

Use the bucket to rinse the head, avoiding the eyes and inner ears. Work the water toward the dog’s tail. Use your hands to work the water through the suds.

While your dog is still in the tub, let him shake excess water off his fur.

Drain the water from the tub and dry the dog with towels. Play close attention to areas where the fur is thick.

Remove your dog from the tub. Turn on the hair dryer to a cool or warm setting (not hot), testing the heat with your hand. Aim first for the thickest fur. Keep the hair dryer approximately 6 inches from the skin to prevent burning and over drying.

Now shower your pooch with love, affection and most of all treats

Daisy's mom, I can relate to the hound smell but I don't think they smell awful do you ??? must have been a non hound owner talking http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Sometimes their ears smell bad but you have to clean them alot because the dirt and wax get trapped in their droopy hound ears. Hannah hates it as soon as she sees the cleaner she runs and hides, I usually find her under the bed or in the closet http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif The cleaner smells like pepermint so now she runs from anything with that smell.

i love hounds, I personally adore the hound smell! Hehe actually I read that about their "awful smell" in a book... it was funny because this was before we had Daisy but my parents had agreed to get her, if I read up on the breed and puppy care. I was reading this book about Bassets and telling my mom what I learned...they made those poor cuties sound awful! Now, maybe Daisy is just an abnormal hound because she has none of these awful traits but I personally don't beleive what I read in that book. It said stuff like they have a constant hound odor, their skin is so oily that it can leave smudge marks on your walls, and they all slobber. I think not! My poor mother was starting to wish she didn't agree to get that Basset! Of course she changed her mind as soon as we got her http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Yes, the ears do smell if you don't wash them a lot. I think they smell fishy... gross. Daisy hates to have them cleaned! Her cleaner smells like mint too, and when she sees me take it out of the cabinet, she runs. I have to dangle treats in front of her nose or she won't behave, and I still usually get spattered with ear cleaning liquis when she shakes!

Back to the shower topic: do any of you have showers with the removable shower massager things in it? I really don't know how to explain it but it makes baths so much easier. They are like these sticks that you can pull down from the wall and spray your dog like that. It eliminates the need for a bucket and it's faster and cleaner. I'd recommend them! Does anyone know what I amtalking about???

Daisy Mom, I know what you are talking about we have it to but I don't know what they are called http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/confused.gif They are handy to have and work well. They save alot of time and if your short like me are easier to reach and clean off the soap.

This is how Simba's bath goes:
First I put flea shampoo on his whole body except his head (i use Sergeant's Skip-Flea & Tick shampoo.) I wash that off and then put Hartz Groomer's Best Puppy Shampoo all over him incudling his head. I wash that out and then i brush his teeth with this hartz beef flavored toothpaste. After that i use his cool new brush adn brush him and then i dry him and brush his coat again. I did skip his bath yesterday so im going to give him a one right after im done reading all of the post!!!

Sometimes it's not good to give a dog a bath to often!! Because they have a special oil in their coats, and if you give them too many baths, you could wash out the special oil in their coats. I'm not exactly sure what happens if you do, but I know it's not that good!

Big Slobbery kisses to Simba!!
