We tried making liver treats for the dogs, and we'll never make that mistake again! My husband pureed liver, and baked it, an the smell was so horrible that one of the kids walked out of her room and gagging. We now buy treats, no matter how much they cost. :D

I have never made treats for the dogs to eat, but when the kids were younger I had a home-made Play Doh recipe that we used to make ornaments for the tree. We used cookie cutters and cut out bone shapes, etc. and then put the dog's name on them. We also made free hand shapes of our dogs and, since we had poodles, we would use a garlic press to create "curly fur" to put on our dogs. Then we baked and painted them and put on a glaze. :)

I made a few batches of treats for Perry and Daisy, but by the time I buy the ingredients and roll them out and bake them Don has begged me to stop. :) It takes a lot of time and there are so many gourmet treats on the internet or some of the pet stores etc. that I think I will pass it up and spend the time on Pet Talk. :D :D :D

Once, I tried to bake these treats for Drake. I got the recipe off the Internet. When I was done, the kitchen was a mess and Drake took one sniff and walked away! He wouldn't even taste them. You know something is bad f even you dog won't eat it!

When we first got my cocker spaniel back in 1985, there wasn't nearly as many dog treat choices on the market! She didn't like Milk Bones at all, so my mom found a recipe for homemade treats, and for several years, that was the only treat that Freckles would eat! My mom still has the recipe someplace - I believe it had several types of grains in it (including barley) and chicken broth. They were completely safe for dogs and humans!

I made dog treats for Daisy once. They had peanut butter in them and were safe for people and dogs - but they had no sugar so they didn't taste very good. Daisy loved them but then again she is a hound and loves eating anything, edible or not ;) My mother got quite a surprise, though, when she came home and found some homemade cookies on a plate in the kitchen. She took a big bite out of one and had to spit it out. She ran into my room and said, "Okay, you definitely did something wrong!"

LOL! Bridget, at least they looked appetizing enough for your mom to be fooled! :D I guess appearance isn't all that important to Daisy or any dog for that matter! They are gobbled down before they even really see them! :D

I don't think that they would want to eat anything cooked by me! http://bbs2.fanforum.com/images/smilies/LOL.gif

Hehehe...this is funny stuff :D :D :D

I have only made treats once, they were little carrot cakes, and I baked them for Hannah & Tucker for hosting Graham's sleepover and let me tell you....I was so glad I saved a little plate for Graham & Cassie because they LOVED them! Graham is not all that food driven, so I did not expect him to like them too much, but he liked them so much that he begged for more...and he NEVER begs!

I have not made them again, but would like to some day. They did not have any meat in them, just carrots and grains and other various stuff, so they smelled great when baking, and they were soft and cake-like when complete. I tried one of them and they wern't very sweet but they were not bad tasting.

I love making treats for Nikki! I have this book full of recipes for dogs, and Nikki loves them all! She thinks she is getting people food because it is all so gourmet! I love doing it , too! It makes me feel like I am doing someting extra special! I even made her a cake for her Birthday!

Making homemade treats for cats is a lot harder than making them for dogs because cats are notoriously fussy eaters. With my luck, I'd slave all day in the kitchen only to have Bo turn her nose up!
