View Full Version : What would your job be in Pettalkville ?

That would be a great town! But we all would need jobs to support all the pets. So what job would you have? I really do well at poop scooping so I thought I could drive the poop-pick up truck and maybe jackiesdaisy, could get her husband to help as she said he was her poop scooper! ( I thought that aly could drive the rescue van or chg. her major and be the vet)!

Oh, that'd be fun! I'll do the vet stuff that my stomach can handle and someone else can do the surgeries, hehe. Or I'd like to be the trainer. I think KayAnn would also like that position.

I would like to be the one who feeds and walks the dogs, Sammi. I wouldn't mind brushing and feeding the cats too. But I don't want to hog all the fun jobs. Maybe I could have a co-worker. How about it, Sandra?

I'll be the handler/trainer of all the dogs! Hopefully that will work!

Pettalkville will have a PBS station in need of programming, so I'd like to be in charge of "This Old Doghouse". We will remodel or renew the old backyard standby into a Poodle Palace or perhaps a Tudor style for the English Bulldogs? A hunting cabin for your favorite spaniel? Maybe just a cozy bungalow for the multi-flavored doggies?

Of course the cats will want equal time, but I'm not sure "This Old Cathouse" would be the right title!

Here's my vote for Karen for Mayor!

How about "This Old Kitty Palace" Segments on reupholstering your furniture could be shown.

I would be pretty happy doing just about anything having to do with the cats and the dogs too.

Can you imagine going to work everyday? Everyone would be in such a great mood being around all of that tail wagging, and purring.

Since I am an urban planner in real life, I would be a planner for the town. I would make sure that there were plenty of parks, ponds, and wide open spaces for dogs and cats to run and play in. I would also make sure that there would be an area for the latest pet gourmet cafes. Of course, we would have to plan for pet friendly homes, vets, PetsMarts, etc.....

TheAntiPam
06-14-2001, 01:14 PM
Ok, Pettalkers, we need some more people! How about an art gallery or a nature museum? Maybe a gourmet restaurant, where you can check your pet instead of your coat. They can frollick and have tasty treats while you enjoy a break from being on-duty (even beloved pets shouldn't go along on EVERY date night!)

Oh, we need some bank tellers that give out treats to the 4-legged customers! And a memorial park to remember our lost animal friends.

Don't forget we need a pet matchmaker and a pet psychic too!

Can we make this town where there are no cars??? I don't want us to risk having any of them hit. In our "perfect" town, they should be able to have some freedom.

I suggest this town be in Southern California, this way the people and animals who love snow can drive about a couple of hours away and be in the snow, the people and animals who like the dry heat can drive a couple of hours away and be in the desert.
Any other suggestions for location?

Perhaps at the edge of town there should be a big parking lot, and everything in town, and all homes, will be accessible by some slow-moving public transit - maybe moving sidewalks, or, of course, horse and buggy!
What's the planner think?

I dunno about Southern California for a location, I'd worry about the bigger dogs who are bothered by extreme heat - our St. Bernard used to get heat rash every summer. Plus I'd worry about the smog. How about someplace more temperate?

Almost forgot for a second - maybe there needs to be some place for cars - how else would dogs get to stick their heads out the windows and pretend they're flying? Maybe there'd be a driver with a car with lots of windows just for this purpose, on a fenced-in track?

Where should our town be? Guess we should ask our four legged friends. Maybe place a map on the floor and let them put a paw
where they think our town should be. You know, we are doing a lot of planning and hugging and kissing and we haven't even asked the objects of our devotion what they think. I laugh when I think of a "stranger" coming to our new town and all they find are cats and dogs on their backs waiting to have their bellies rubbed.

Come to think of it, I'd like to be the official belly scratcher.

Horses and buggies are a great idea!

Oh yes to Ashland!!! i was just there two weeks ago. not only do they have a GREAT dogpark but they have some wonderful dog people all through the town. The girl at the gas station - who told me how to get to the park and offered bug a treat (she had a huge bowl of dog treats!), the people at the park who nicely cleaned up after bug while i minded the puppies, all the people at the park who wanted to adopt any of the three dogs i had - they where asking where else there was adoption info, to the girl at the coffee shack who filled a coffee lid with whipped cream as a treat for bug on our way home (no charge!). Plus there's great music stores and fun places there. i vote the Ashland area! maybe they could even have a new play "Shakespeare goes to the Dogs" in our honor. I'd be happy to work on writing it. in fact i'll start this weekend!

I could be head of the amusement park.. but id rather stick to grooming and training.. I LOVE doing that stuf.. Everytime i got to my neighbors who has a cocker spaniel i groom him and she pays me i do nails, clean ears, cut fur, bathe them, brush him.. alllll sorts of stuff

Simba wants to name it SimCity but i told him that u all would want pettalkville.

I think that Pettalkville should be in a very special valley, known only to animals and the people who love them. It would have mountains to the north side, with plenty of snow for the huskies and Saint Bernards year-round, but never be so cold that people would be uncomfortable.
On the south side of the valley, it would be very warm year-round, nicely so, so Chihuahuas and Cornish Rexes, as well as lizards and reptiles, could go outside without being too cold. Perhaps the southwest part of the valley will be desert, like Arizona, and the eastern part of the valley will have temperate climate, so people and animals who love the seasons in New England would be happy there. In the heart of the valley, it will be warm, but not muggy, sunny, but not dangerously so, and there would be a big lake for water fun for everyone. And on one side it is bordered by the ocean, so dolphins and whales can visit, and have a safe harbor.

How about that? (And Elvis can come visit when he tires of Graceland.)

Karen, I'm not bragging or anything like that but it sounds just like San Diego, California. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Summer temp run about in the 70s or 80s with usually no humidity, winters are usually mild, 60s to 70s, the Ocean borders the West, the Mountains border the East (sometimes snow in the winter)and we have a few Lakes around the County. The only problem is that we have, like most places, too many cars and to much urban sprawl. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif
Looks like we will have to keep looking for the perfect spot.

If you picked Hawaii, it would have to be on another island, maybe the Big Island since it has cool mountains, snow on the peaks in winter, mid range weather areas and hot areas too. And we could have beaches with pets and their owners only. Dogs allowed only off leash. It has lots of open space for new homes and businesses. Oahu, my island, is way too crowded.

I want to be the planner of huge cat playgrounds attached to every home with them. (Handymen or women will do the actual work.) Geared to the size of your cat family or what you want your cat family to be. Raised walkways, tunnels, snuggle holes, hanging and moving toys of all sorts, and a grassy area to lay in. Alterations can be made for birds, reptiles, or even opened bottomed ones for ducks. These are for their temporary play time while we are all at work. On the side I will be the spokesman for ducks and geese. Dogs will no longer have to guard the town because we'll have a geese patrol. To avoid the meetings of four and two leggeds, there will be a double fenced grassy perimiter around the town for them to travel in while they watch for intruders. Their honking will activate special cameras attached to poles in the area. No anti-animal invaders ever.

We need a special town only tv channel showing personal interviews and stories by townspeople. With an events schedule.

What about an adoption center, bringing in unwanted animals from areas where uncaring caretakers discard them. And we still need an outreach group to go out to the outside, educating people, helping animals to find homes. We can't totally go away and leave the lost ones behind?

Jasper's Mom

I was talking about this town with my youngest son, Chris, and he said he would come too and invent a pet global positioning devise so that any pets accidentally lost could be immediately honed in on and brought home.

At the same time he would develop an electronic devise that will be attached to a collar or a leg (in the case of birds) and it would enable us to understand, in any language, what our pet says to us, and they be able to understand what we say.

Can he come too?

By all means, bring your kids, and bring your grandparents. A school program for learning the care and respect of animals - Perfect! A nursing home with lots of seniors that have love to give our pets, and that have decades of experience with caring for pets...sounds like just what Pettalkville can use!

Of course, seniors that are healthy and live at home can be part of any pet projects! And working along side our youngsters will give the kids and the pets so many hours of love and care!

I think cat dunking would be fine - we'd just choose Maine Coons, or other "wierd" cats who LOVE water, and try to jump in the shower with their people at any opportunity!

And for cats, there'd be "dog dunking" but the dogs in question would be Chessies, or Labs, and other "water" dogs!

I'd like to volunteer my services to the adoption center or the outreach group that Jasper's Mom described.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world where everyone cares about and loves nature and all living creatures? At least when I'm here at Pet Talk with all of you I feel closer to that world. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I know one Maine Coon cat that wouldn't be too interested in the "Cat Dunking", MIMI!!! She isn't too fond of that water, unless she has a nice clean bowl to drink from. Maybe "Cat Bathing", elective bathing, would be a better idea!

We're going to need other jobs for our significant others, so maybe companies that produce items without animal testing would be welcome.

As for lawyers, we're going to need estate planning lawyers, so we can leave our pets with good care in case of accidents or... well, you know.

And we're going to need to deal with the noise issue...Even the nicest doggies can get on your nerves, especially when they live next door. We'll keep working on that one!

We'll need to have foreign language tutors so we can have sister cities in other places in the world! Whew, this is quite a project!

From a planning perspective, yes the town would need at least one access road to bring in supplies but it could be located outside the actual town and linked by a enclosed smaller road to link all the businesses to the town. We won't have to let cars anywhere near the pet areas. perhaps we can have slower moving golf carts though!

Ok I am ready to pack my bags http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif My hubby will be the network engineer for all of the computers and servers in Pettalkville. He'll also do computer support so no one in Pettalkville will have problems with their computers. And my mom, since she is an administrator of a senior living facility, she could help with all of the elderly animals, she'll provide extra care, special games, and a loving touch to those elderly animals.

I am sticking to my roll of activities director for activities like agility, obedience, freestlyle, tracking, search & rescue, frisbe, and herding and, per Rachel, I will also be the towns' pet nutritionist http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

We got losted an couldn't find the topic after it moved! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/confused.gif Cinder here, finally...

Dad sez OhKeeDoKee for takin on Fire & Rescue job. Gonna have to get sum golfey kartz bigger than the wun we're rafflin off to make into Fire Trukz an Amboolancez. An Dad sez we're gonna have PET Amboolancez on dootee 24/7 in case any FurKids or FeatherKids need a ride to the WhiteCoat Lab. We'll need sum Volunteerz what are willin to sleep inna Station wun nite a week so's we got quick response times.

WHAT!?? Dad sez I gotta get shaved an painted or else go out an find a stray Dalmatian for the Fire Mascot position! I'll go find a nudder Stray wiff spotz ~ my standy-up earbonez don't fit so good inna Fire Hat!

As for possible Strays wanderin into Towne, Dad sez we'll build a special wing onna Fire Station wiff extra bunks, lotsa food pans, an easy-open Dawg an Kat doorz so's the Strays will know they're welcome. SmokeMutt wuntz to be the Fishull Stray Greeter, an I'll be his part-time Sistant Greeter ~ since I've got sperience doin that. We'll have a nice Doption Office in that wing, too, so we'll need sum of the Volunteerz to man that office while they're on stand-by for Fire & Rescue callz.

Whut about Kops? We'll need sumbuddie to coordinate sum Shepherds ta patrol the Towne perimeter to keep riff-raff like puppie mill scouts an animal abusers frum eber gettin inside. We're lettin horseys in too, aren't we? Bet the Kops would rather ride horseys than golfey katrz while on patrol.

Oops ~ Now Dad wuntz a team of Fire Horseys ta live inna Station an pull a old-time Steamer Fire Wagon for parades http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif! He sez we'll accept retired horseys cuz they won't have ta run fast inna parade http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif. And don't worry, Cinners & SmokeMutt...AntiPam is right...we are all so busy packing to move to Pettalkville that we have not had so much time! I think you 2 kids have a great idea about everything...I especially like the idea of retired horses as horsie cops....maybe we can have some sort of team that goes to other *bad* towns outside of Pettalkville and rescues abused horsies and brings them into Pettalkville and makes them big and strong by feeding them and loving them like they deserve and letting those horsies help the cops by walking around the peremiter to make sure no bad guys ever get in! Ya think? And maybe the young, strong ones can have a job one day per week pulling the carrages around....ya know, carrages instead of cars so no pups or kitties (or goats) get hit by cars.

Oh, Cinder, kiddo, you don't need to have spots to be the firestation dog! We think you'll do just fine as is - and we'll of coure make you a fire-hat with holes for your ears! This is Pettalkville! And any spotted dogs that wanna help, well, they can, too, right?

I think the retired horses for parades - and just plain lovin' - is a good idea. And we can love and fatten up rescue horsies to be police-horses.

Maybe we do need a "real" firetruck for emergencies, but I have an idea! Why not, instead of a siren, figure out a "Danger! Danger! run and hide!" bark that the truck can make, and a "run for the hills!" meow, too, so that all the animals will know to stay out of the road when they hear it coming? What do you think, Cinder - could you and Smokey work on the bark-siren, and maybe Boots and some Siamese friends work on the cat one?

A little side thread just for Phred (that's rhyme, gimme a dime)-

We once had a solid black, silky longhaired kitty named Bunky. I don't know where my son got that name, but it took. Once, me and my boyfriend were watching one of those "Police Academy" movies (okay, it was raining, we had already worked the last jigsaw puzzle, and were completely bored) and in it was a kitty named Bunky, who was also black and long haired! That's when bf told me that firehouses often had resident cats, and they named them Bunky as in "bunkmate" becuase the cats would snooze in the bed with them at night! Is that true? (Bf often didn't know what he was talking about.)

I think I (as Mayor!) will interview everyone who wants to move in, and I'll have several animal helpers that will help me gauge their reactions.

But a charter of sorts is a good idea - maybe we should spilt it between rules for animals, and rules for people!
Like for people: You must love all animals, or at least be respectful of those you don't.

For pets: All pets are created equal - a 200-pound St. Bernard has no greater rights in any situation than an 8-ounce canary.

I think the idea to have Pettalkville in Tennessee is wonderful, after all, I live in Tennessee. The dogs would love the football team (TN VOLS) because their mascot is Smokey the Bluetick Coonhound. I would probably own the human shelter. That's where dogs can go and pick out their humans. Except we wouldn't keep them in cages. We would let them live in condos, the dogs would go and learn about different families and decidw which one they want. I would also be the dog masousse (spelling?). Every dog loves my massages.

not to stirr up our happy little thread, but...

i think the obedience classes should be voluntary. i do great teaching my dogs all by myself. unlees i ended up w/ a specific problem, i don't think i should be forced into going. i however will be taking any future dog of mine to puppy kindergarten. (basically works on the socialization principle.)

i wish that people that were first time dog owners would consider obedience classes, but i really don't think it should be mandatory.

if our community would be as perfect as we hope, people would have the proper judgement on wether they need to go to obedience classes or not.

Okay, y'all are already forming into factions - the liberals who think the government needs to tell you what to do (mandatory dog obedience) and the conservatives who think they do very well on their own (voluntary dog obedience). Like I said before, keep this up and y'all won't have to move anywhere - you would have made the same town you already live in! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I don't know, I think the coments you made about liberal and consertive are backwards? I am pretty liberal about the training thing...I guess as long as the dog is well behaved there should be no mandatory training, but I can't understand why someone would not want to attend at least one class because they are a BLAST!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Okay, okay - no politics here, just pets and love! I think the rule should be that all dogs need to pass a minimum courtesy/obedience test - home-schooled or school-schooled, it doesn't matter!

Who wants to run the tests? Keep in mind, you can't be bribed by excess puppy kisses!

Cats, of course, would have no need for an obedience test - most would just stare at the tester as if to say "Who are you to order ME, and what are you talking about?" http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Well I think Daisy will be in trouble in Pettalkville before she gets there in the obedience thing. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif She turns her head and walks away when I call her, she pretty much does whatever she wants, she plays when she feels like it, she has the run of the house, she jumps on her brother when he is sleeping, she is strong minded, very independent, loving when she feels like it and I wouldn't have her any other way. Her brother, Perry, on the other hand, is very obedient, I think he would be a shoe in. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

How could I have missed this post?! lol

What a great place! If wishes were horses...Pettalkville would be a bigger horse community than Lexington, KY!

Ok, after skimming the posts, I think I have found a job that has not been taken. I want to be the official bunny kisser, cuddler, nose scratcher, and treat giver. Of course I'm more than willing to share this with anyone who wishes to help!

And here's some random thoughts/questions...

1. Would we be able to do away with the postal system if everyone had their own personal hydrant?

2. Would we have porta-litter-boxes instead of porta-potties?

3. Can you imagine what the zoo would be like? "And on your left you have a fine example of a lazy-us maximus homo sapien. As known as the master who will not play ball 24/7..."

1. We'd still need a postal system for us humans, but all sorts of animals could get in on the act - maybe a newfie or a donkey to pull the cart of mail, and smaller animals to deliver from the cart to your door! No bunnies for that task, though - they'd just have fun tearing up the mail, and it'd never get delivered. And as there'd be no junk mail in Pettalkville, we would WANT our mail!

2. (hee hee!)

3. Gosh, maybe the zoo would include some animals who just demand adoration from afar, like some cats I know - they could come to their "zoo job" in the morning and lay about being admired all day, then go home at night!

Wow, why would they name a street Anthrax anyway?
I heard that the heavy metal group Anthrax is debating whether they should change their name or not.

I think that the streets in PetTalkville should be named after animals, eg: Giraffe Street, Kangaroo Street, Blue Jay Street, etc.
Either that or we can name one street after each pet that lives there, eg: Spencer Street, Butter Boulevard, Daisy Drive, Elvis Avenue, etc.

I just caught up to this post and I wanna come too! I can't decide between two jobs so maybe someone can help me make up my mind! It is a toss up between the Barkery (Doggie Deli) or the Dognasium. Since this is paradise for our pets, I am sure they will get lots of treats and they'll need to have a place to work off the extra pounds. After all we want them to stay healthy! :D The Dognasium will have all the latest equipment and of course a couple of water areas. A heated swimming pool for those who need therapy and a cool pool for those who want to just swim and cool off! A basketball court for the Air Bud types! Lot's of fun for all.

I think I just sold myself on the dognasium. Although after all the workouts they will need snacks. Someone want to volunteer to open a Barkery at the Dognasium?????

I love the idea of Pettalkville. Heaven on Earth!

We must have a library with up-to-date pet health 'zines and general interest books and animal fiction etc etc. Also, of course, a reading room where I (or various volunteers) can read out loud to all that want to listen. I can work there :D shhhhhhh here come da boss again

Laurie! It looks like you're figuring it all out!! Hide from the boss, think out your responses very carefully, then type them in! Better yet, put them in Word, and copy and paste! It is a good thing there is no boss hanging over my head!!! I'd have been fired a year ago (when I discovered this site). :D

We should start a true confessions post. I also duck from the boss. They have this remote administrator software so they can see without coming to your PC but I disabled mine. One of the benefits of working in a Networking group! Even at home I have to listen to hubby when I sit at the computer saying..."Your not reading that Pet stuff again, are you?" I tell him no. Technically I am not just reading it though since I post too! HEHEHEHEHE!

Do you think this means I'm addicted to Pet Talk???? I won't admit it though since I'm not ready to go into Pet Talk anonymous!

My family thinks I am completely crazy. My mom always asks me, "You're not on that pet site again, right?" Right, Mom... even though she loves Daisy, she says she doesn't know how I could just keep talking about a dog with everyone! We are truly a special kind of people, Pet Talkers :) I find myself checking Pet Talk before I check my own email, and I am constantly multi-tasking, trying to read up on what's going on with all of you as I plow through algebra and Spanish homework! ;)

We don't have internet access at work yet so my addiction is only activated at home! :D Sometimes my family will see me at the computer and they'll say "I guess you are checking that pet site again!" LOL!

As for my job in Pettalkville, can I please join Becky and Sara, in training, Agility, Obedience, Flyball, Tracking, Lure Coursing, Utility, ect? That's what I'd like to do!

Pet Talk isn't excluding lawyers, it's just that there might not be much work for them in a place where everybody looooooves their animals, and is treated fairly and kindly! :)

But you can live in Pettalkville anyway, you just might have to take outside work! okay?

I just went to the first page of this great thread for the first time in a long time.

The wonderful lady who started this thread, our user named "sammi," passed away this autumn. She had been sick, and not posting for quite a while, which is why we didn't make a big announcement as not many people knew her any more.

But this thread, as well as all our wonderful memeories of her, is truly her legacy to Pet Talk.

P.S. If you smoke, stop now. We lost Sammi (real name Molly) at far too young an age.

Boy I miss Sammi, the wonderful friend that started this thread so many years ago. Rest in peace and be always pain free dear Sammi :( I'll keep with my original job as librarian for pets and people. To repeat myself, one of my furkids favorite things is for me to pick up a book (any book, but especially one with different characters with different voices) and read out loud to them :D We will also have various mags and books for us two-leggers - i.e. "Bark", "Cats Today", "The Best Bunny Book" etc

p.s. Karen, evidently you posted the above just as I was writing this.. didn't we have fun with Sammi, Aly, Texas Auggie and all at our first PetTalk meeting in Texas :D What a great time!!!

I tried to read every post but I got called away a few times & may have skipped one here or there.

Was there any mention of a pet store? We do need a place to purchase all the wonderful toys, treats, foods & supplies for all the pets in pettalkville. If there is not one I'd love to open one up in pettalkville. Of course I would not sell any puppies or the like, I would be more than happy if the shelter could be a part of my store and take care of animal adoptions & purchases.

If there already is a pet store, since I am multi-talented :p I could be a fill-in for most jobs, since most of my other prefered jobs are already filled. I could help out at the vets office, help out with training & some limited grooming, I could take the dogs on hikes or help keep the town clean, help with landscaping or book/paper/computer work, You name it I can help. :D

I forgot to mention that in my role as groundskeeper, anything I would use on the grass and trees and shrubs will be pet-friendly and completely natural NO CHEMICALS HERE!

Ditto!! I don't care what I do...as long as I'm there!! What a great place Pettalkville would be :D

Hmm, I think I'll be keeper of a huge pool open to all the dogs. Of course, I could operate the automatic ball dispenser if needed. ;)

Maybe one of you could help Gina with The Pettalkville Museum, or be a helper at lv4dogs pet supply shop!

Wow! I can't believe that I have not seen this thread after being here so long. I never had the privilage to meet Molly, she sounds wonderful.

I would love to be the vertirnarian technologist! If that job is taken, any other job will do!

So, when can I move? I can't wait;)

Oh Karen I had no idea. As soon as you said Sammi, I remembered her and her dogs. It saddens me to hear about this, many times I had wondered what ever happened to her. Thank you for posting it.

Now my job as "Official feeder of Animals" is great, but can I be a snuggler too? Soo many cuties to snuggle:D

As well as being groundskeeper, I can freelance as a cat cuddler in my free time!

I didn't know that Sammi died. :( Reading through this old thread
brings back memories of when I first joined PT. So many posters who
don't post much or at all anymore. :(

It has been fun to go back and reread this thread...and remember many of the members who no longer post, or don't post as often. I'm sorry to hear of Sammi's passing.

Even though I don't know her, we should keep this thread going, in memory of her:)

I had forgotten all about this thread! I don't think I posted in it though, as I wasn't as active when I first joined. (although Ive been a member since 2003 how did I miss this lol)

In Pettalkville I'd be security, just as I am in the real world. Instead of watching people though (because I KNOW you all would be good ;) ) my job would be to make sure no kitties or puppers were out wandering around because they were good escape artists!

Karen

Oooh, beware of bunnies - they can be good escape artists as well! :) But in any case, you're hired! :)

And let us remember Molly, too - username "sammi" - she started this thread, oh so long ago.
