Subject : [Roving_Rover] FIV cats need homes/foster URGENTLY

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST:

About two months ago,134 cats were taken from a hoarder situation in a boarding facility and taken to the SPCA of Monterey County, California. The SPCA refused to release the most vulnerable (young kittens with ringworm, very sick Persians, etc) to rescue or release any of these cats to their local rescue insisting they would place all the cats themselves. Many of the cats had ringworm, most had URI. They have treated ringworm in many of the 134 cats with only lym dips, saying that systemic RX was too dangerous to the cats. Meanwhile, these cats have been kept in the high stress environment of a crowded shelter and many of the healthier ones were adopted out. Some were returned to owners. All of these cats are very sociable and loving. I was told all the cats have been neutered and spayed and I believe they have all been vaccinated, as well.

Twenty four of the cats turned out to be FIV positive, one was reclaimed by the owner, 7 were euthanized because, and I quote, "the health of a number of the FIV cats deteriorated until euthanasia became the only humane alternative." They are now saying they are willing to allow the remaining FIV+ cats to go into rescue homes, foster homes or adoptive homes and will euthanize any of the remaining FIV positive cats unless homes that meet their criteria can be found. These are the cats who are at risk of euthanasia:

3 cats with FIV
5 cats with FIV and URI
6 cats with FIV and Ringworm
2 cats with FIV with URI and Ringworm

The shelter is willing to place any of the cats "in a home situation (as opposed to cages) and, absent compelling circumstances, we will arrange a site visit for homes out of our service area.". The shelter is willing to allow the cats to be initially isolated and temporarily caged so they can be treated for their URI and ringworm without risking other cats in the homes.

I had previously contacted many different rescues with foster homes who did take FIV cats but none of those were willing to have their foster homes intruded on by the shelter's delegated inspectors, though they all did make regular home visits to their own foster homes. The shelter refused to release the cats to them as a result.

These cats will be euthanized at the end of the month unless foster or adoptive homes are found. The shelter is asking for help with these cats whom they consider "unadoptable", so I am sending this plea for foster or adoptive homes that are willing to submit to an inspection by delegated authorities out widely. CFA Purebred Rescue is willing to help make arrangements for transport to the homes, in California or elsewhere, if approved by the shelter, though none of these cats are purebred. The shelter will not consider placing these cats in a sanctuary.

If you are a rescue with foster homes willing to take these cats or you are willing to adopt any of these cats, please contact me by calling TOLL FREE 888-303-9454 or replying to this email.
