Woman was carrying 16 stones of snails
British customs officers have arrested an air passenger carrying more than her own weight in edible snails.
The woman, from Nigeria, was detained at Heathrow, after saying she had a 'small item' to declare, reports the Guardian.
Staff decided to search her cases and found sacks of the delicacy - a growing export from Nigeria to Europe's delicatessen trade.
"It was the largest seizure of snails ever at the airport," said Bob Gaiger, a spokesman for Customs and Excise, whose colleagues weighed the haul at 104kg (16st).
"The woman arrived on a flight from Lagos," said Mr Gaiger. "An officer became suspicious and opened one of her many bags."
The first bag of snails was nestling amid clothes and other packing, and the rest of the passenger's luggage revealed hundreds more.
They are thought to be giant african snails which have undercut more expensive French escargots in the restaurant market.
A 42-year-old woman was bailed to appear at Uxbridge magistrates' court charged with importing prohibited foodstuffs.
