Take this test to find out (http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/intelligencerreport/yankee_dixie_quiz.html)

Do you have more of a Yankee dialect or a Southern dialect?

I am 40% Yankee which isn't too bad since I was born in upstate New York. :D

Haha, in Wisconsin we use "Bubbler" for a drinking/water fountain when I clicked on that it said "Heavy bias in southern Wisconsin and Massachusetts"- I am in southern Wisconsin, hehehe. :p That made me chuckle. Oh and what kind of sale is in the front yard- I clicked rummage sale it said "Western Great Lakes including Chicago and Milwaukee"- I am 5 min outside Milwaukee, lol.

That test is a good one.

48% Yankee, barely into the Yankee category. I guess that makes sense, since I was born in the Midwest - not far above the Mason-Dixon line, in Southern Illinois. I spent 7 years living in Louisiana, including the 4 years I attended LSU, and I picked up a few things down there. I have lived in St. Louis, MO, since July 2003, so I guess I'm swinging back toward Yankee again. Pretty good test - I'll have to pass this one on.

There are a couple things I do that are more Southern, and a couple things I do that are more Northern - for example, I still will say "Y'all" occasionally, just b/c it's easier than saying "You guys" or "You all", but I say it less often than I did when I first moved up here. Interesting.

One of the true tests of where you're from is what you call where you put groceries at the store - I call it a shopping cart, b/c that's what I learned growing up, but down South, most people call them buggies. Hmmm. Interesting thread.

Same result for me. If the test doesn't help you to filter the Germans out then it doesn't help much:D

63% Dixie, a definative Southern score. I'm from the mid-Atlantic but south of the Mason-Dixon line so I guess that's appropriate. I certainly enjoy southern cooking better than northern fare, that's for dern sure ;)

It's very biased toward certain things. I'm frankly about 100% Yankee, born, raised, lived my whole life in Massachusetts, ancestors on the Mayflower, ancestors in every conflict from the American Revolution forward.

Here are the test "text" answers:

Clearly Massachusetts, SE Maine, or Rhode Island
Most common around the Great Lakes and into the northeast U.S.
Common throughout the entire United States
Southeastern United States
Centered on Chicago and the Great Lakes region south to Tennessee
Common nearly everywhere
Common nearly everywhere ("you guys" favors northern) - I'd just use You, but that was not an option, neither was "you guys" which I would have chosen second
All of U.S.; slightly favors the southeast
Common throughout entire U.S.
This is a universal generic term used nationwide
Very strongly biased toward the Northeast United States
New England and western Great Lakes
Used nationwide, especially in urban areas (Actually, I'd call it an on-ramp)
Used nationwide and in southern urban areas
Heavy bias in southern Wisconsin and Massachusetts
Used heavily in northeast US and California
Used heavily in Great Lakes and Midwest region
This is common throughout most of the U.S.
Dont worry, this is a common response.
Great Lakes and Intermountain West

And yet it told me I was 49% - "just barely Yankee!"

I'm wondering if perhaps the fact that some PT'ers travel quite a bit (Karen, Sara etc) their answers could reflect that, and perhaps are not as "Yankee" (in their case) as someone who rarely leaves their hometown? Just a thought - and it is all in fun anyway. I love regional dialects and hope they never get truly "homogenized"
