View Full Version : Chickens who play tic-tac-toe...

The Boston Globe just ran an AP story, "Casino offers $10,000 for beating chicken at tic-tac-toe." I did not know that chickens played tic-tac-toe. Having seen documentaries on how birds can learn I am willing to believe that it is possible for a bird to genuinely play a simple game. PressPlus has a better article (http://www.pressplus.com/business-casino/090301CHICKEN.html) on the casino game.

I don't wish to promote casino gambling and I would like to learn more but I am not sure there is anything intrinsically wrong with playing tic-tac-toe against a bird. Especially if they only have to play for an hour or two at a time. Unlike the activist quoted in the article, I think people who saw a bird win a fair game would end up having more respect for chickens.

The Lexington Herald-Leader (from Kentucky) has a good article on the chickens in Bird brains ready for all challengers at Bluegrass Fair. (http://www.kentuckyconnect.com/heraldleader/news/071301/weekenderdocs/13chickens.htm)

United Poultry Concerns (http://www.upc-online.org/) has a website but I did not see any mention of the tic-tac-toe chickens. Their website does have photos of mistreated chickens. United Poultry Concerns is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit organization that addresses the treatment of domestic fowl.

Has anyone played tic-tac-toe with a chicken?

What ain interesting story! LOL! I had always heard that chickens were rather stupid, but if they are so good at tic tac toe... maybe I was misinformed! :) Thanks for the story, Paul! You always post the most interesting things!

Goooo, Chikunz! :D

As for the Chikun-Lovers; consider the chickens' point of view:

Which would you rather be?
"Exploited", well fed, in air conditioned comfort, short work hours, with guaranteed job security, health benifits, and probably a teaching job in your retirement; -OR-
Deep fried an wrapped inna Micky-D's Chikun McNuggets box?

Exploit me, please! ;)
