Every day at least 1 pet in every shelter gets killed. That is terrible! When we whent to the animal shelter in Orangburg ,SC a man brought a puppy in be cause he thought it was a girl. What kind of life would that be to live six weeks to be killed becase you'er a girl , or just because you're not wanted. That would not be the kind of life I would want, would you. So next time you or somone you know is looking for a pet remember , you could be the only hope for that puppy that the time is running out on! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

I strongly agree, same goes for cats. As for those people who brought an animal into their home, and just abandoned it because of something they don't like about it, they should be ashamed of theirselves. Abandoning an animal at a shelter, all scared and alone is the lowest of all low things you could possibly do.

I disagree on that last part. The worst thing you can do is throw an animal out on the street, letting it "fend for itself" and starve, be abused or get run over on the city streets, get attacked by wild animals in the country, revert to feral status and produce more unwanted kittens.

I lived in what some city people thought of as "the country" growing up, though it was more suburban than rural. People from the city would drive out and dump half-grown cats in our neighborhood at the end of every summer, thinking they would "do fine."

At least at a shelter they are fed, and kept warm and out of the elements, and have at least a chance at being adopted, albeit a slim one.

You got me there. Abandoning an animal out to fend for itself is 100 times worse then abandoning an animal at a shelter. They are both terrible things to do though.

You would be surprised the number of people that think that setting a cat or dog "free" is ok.
My little cat Clyde was one of those cats. His owner decided to let him go, at age 2 months because he was refusing to use the litter box. Can't say I blame him though, the litter box was beyond filthy. She was going to take him out to the country and drop him somewhere because she thought he was too wild to be trained. I took him from her, and he turned out to be a wonderful cat, never once had an accident because I kept the litterbox clean for him. He was in pretty bad shape when I got him, he had dry, dandruffy fur from poor food, and a terrible case of worms.
I just can't fathom what would make a person think that a domesticated animal could possibly survive out in the woods.

Well the people at the shelters have to because there is not enogh room in the shelter. Do you think they want to do it? Do you think that they enjoy doing?

Today when I went to the shelter there was a cocker spanile female and they had shaved her ,she was bloted and she had little bruses and scabs every where I didn`t see her because I refused to look at her because the way they were discribing her, I know I would have broken down in tears!! My step dad said that it had looked as though some one had put cigarettes out on her!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif

Four of my five pets are Shelter animals, as was my last dog. ( http://icyhott99.tripod.com/myfurryfamily/) I started a website for our local shelter about a year ago. It seemed to help. http://www.montrosemouse.com

The things some people do to animals is beyond comprehension. After working with the dedicated shelter people, who took animals home themselves, and after seeing SO MANY animals over the course of only one year, it really drives home the fact that one person can only do so much. The problem is enormous and they keep coming in...

All we can each do is our best. Get the word out about spaying/neutering and rescuing. Discourage pet shop purchases.

If your local shelter does not have a website, offer to build and maintain one for them on a free hosting site. It could be a huge contribution.
