I was clipping the cat's nails this morning and noticed that Mandy has what LOOKS like a small claw growing out of the side of her pad on her back paw. It's really strange looking. I don't want to clip it for fear she might bleed. I'm going to have the vet look at it when I take her in for spaying in a couple of weeks. This way if he feels it should come out, he can do it while she's under anesthesia.

REALLY weird!

It could be a corn. A couple of my babies have that on their paw and that is what the vet told me it was.

I dont thonk,that is serious,as it might be a false nail,and can be remover,easily.

I tried to get a picture of it but it comes out too blurry. It definitely looks like a "rotted yellow" claw that is also splintered. It's just beneath her REAL claw. She doesn't seem to be in any pain and it's not infected, so I'll wait till her appt. with the white coats.

I'm glad it's not hurting her...let us know what the vet says!

That IS odd Donna. I will be interested to know what it is - I learn so much here!!

I am glad it is not hurting Mandy and that you are going to the white coats anyway:)

Is sounds to me like the exact same thing Mishka has on his right back paw. I had the vet check it out and it turns out its just overgrown hard skin or something like a callous - but it looks almost like and extra claw. And it always grows back..
I trim it with his regular clippers - and he can't feel a thing.
so...hoping Mandy has the same thing, keep us posted!

I took a closer look at it last night. It's definitely a "dead" claw. So I clipped it a little. She didn't flinch at all.

Donna - is this the same thing that happens when they "shed" old claws?? I have heard about this but never seen anything on my kitties claws.

sirrahbed,

Not sure. It looks like a claw that is dead. It's yellow and looks dry. It's not white like her other claws. As long as it doesn't hurt her, I'll just keep it trimmed.
