DERBY, Conn. -- Animal rights activists gathered outside Derby Superior Court Thursday, demanding the maximum penalty for a 20-year-old man accused of slashing the throats of six puppies, killing five of them.

Brannon Chandler was arrested Jan. 20 and charged with animal cruelty. Police said he slit the dogs' throats with a buck knife.

Animal rights activists collected 11,000 signatures on a petition asking the court for the stiffest penalty. Chandler faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all six counts of cruelty.

"The laws should be very stiff on animal abusers and this man should get the maximum penalty," said Linda Larose-Leigh of West Haven.

The puppies belonged to the owners of a home where Chandler was a house guest, police said. He was angry that his friends wouldn't let him have a dog because he couldn't care for it, authorities said.

The judge denied a request by prosecutors to order a psychiatric examination of Chandler, who remains in jail on a $50,000 bond.

The judge ordered Chandler to stay away from the puppies' owner, but denied a request that Chandler stay away from any animals if he makes bond.   What the H**L is that supposed to mean? Here's a comment too from a Vet-Pet member that was well worded! "How about a psychiatric examination and 30 years for the judge? Or maybe
we'll just wait until the puppy slasher slices up some children who get on his
nerves".
