Rutherford has blocked again. :( He will have the P.U. surgery. :(

He goes in tomorrow morning, but I am unsure as to the exact day/time they will do the surgery. My vet admits to not doing this surgery and wants to find him a proper surgeon. She isn't sure if it will be done tomorrow or later in the week, but she will keep his bladder empty in the mean time.

I was afraid of this. I have been watching him like a hawk. We have done all we could to try to prevent the surgery, but the blockage was just too large to disolve in his bladder and go away.

Unblocking cat $$$

P.U. Surgery $$$$$

Rutherford's sweet purr..........priceless.

Jen, I'm so sorry to hear that Rutherford will need surgery.:( With Storm I used a board certified surgeon and he didn't have any complications and seemed to heal up faster than Cirrus had.

Lots of prayers and positive thoughts are being sent your way. I'm sure that everything will go just fine.:)

I must say that I also was worried when I heard that Rutherford only arrived to small and medium peeing:(

I keep my fingers crossed for him and the boys will cross their paws!

Don't forget: Boots, Fister and Sky live very well with the surgery:)

I don't have a complete update at this time, but the word is that Rutherford peed a good amount on his own before they had a chance to work on him today. So, I am to pick him up at 7pm (ET) tonight and the vet will be explainnig our options (or plan of action).

So stay tuned.....

I can't wait to get my boy back and see what we are going to do next.

Thats good news! I bet he decided at the last minute he's just not ready to be operated on just yet!

Jen
We went through this with Porch and it's well worth all the $$$, if needed (which I know you know that). It was a success and Porch is still with us. I wish you the best and hope Rutherford can avoid having the surgery.

Well, he has only a slight reprive. He DOES indeed need the surgery, but we still need to find a surgeon. He can have it done by surgeon #1 on Feb. 14th, but we'd like sooner if we can get an appointment with surgeon #2. I will hopefull know tomorrow.

He had an x-ray taken today. He has TWO stones blocking the urethra AND a huge one (well, huge for a kitty) just sitting in the bladder. :( he will need not only the P.U. but a SYST-otomy to remove this larger stone.

Back to watching his every pee movement. :(

Rutherford is slowly becoming the $6 million cat.

Jen, I'm so sorry to hear that Rutherford also has stones as well.:( These are the calcium oxalate stones and this is what they thought that Storm had but it still hasn't been proven yet. Hopefully you'll be able to find a surgeon to perform the surgery soon. Here's a link that tells you more about the calcium oxalate stones:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/feline_lower_urinary_tract_dis.html. You need to click on bladder stones to get the info and then feline oxalate stones.

Somehow I missed the update! I think regarding the stones which always bear the risk of blockage the surgery is the right option. Because a blockage is life threatening.

I wish you all the best and keep my fingers crossed:)

Rutherford is out of surgery. All went well. He should come home tomorrow. Complications should be at a minimun concerning the P.U. surgery. But his bladder has been damaged over the years, probably from his frequent UTI and possibly having stones longer than we suspected. The doctor said his bladder has the texture of leather (vs. the soft velvet feel it should have). It will never be "normal" but hopefully it will do its job.

The stones will be sent out for analysis. He will have pain meds, antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory. He will go back in 3 weeks to have the stitches removed (under sedation).

I am to call on him tomorrow morning. :)

Oh Rutherford, we are so happy you are over it now. I am sorry that your inflammation was so bad it hurted your bladder:(

I hope everything will be much easier now for you:) Tigris send headbumpies to his brother.

Hope he's home soon.

My Pete had this same surgery three years ago. He's just fine now! He actually came home a different cat (Pete had to fly to see a specialist about 3000 km from home!) He left a miserable, depressed, cat who hid every chance he got. He came home a purring, affectionate, happy boy!
