awwwwe! all these pics are so cute! i love chinchillas are so cute. i wish i had one. one time i wanted to rescue my friend's, but my dad said "NO ! ! !"
anyone else think that the pokemon pikachu looks like a chinchilla? i think if i ever got one, i'd name it pika. (i know pikachu is yellow, but i love the grey and or silver chinchillas the best.)
any one have any favorite colors or fur types?

I used to breed chinchillas. I had a std. grey male named Cody, a std. grey female named Pica, a violet female who was rescued from a fur breeder named Little Face, and a white female with some silver tipped hairs named Tess. I ended up with 2 babies, and both were solid white. They were good pets but required more then any other small rodentish pets. They had to have dust baths every day, they were so extremely nocternal and sensetive to daily noise that I had to pretty much give my room up to them. I tried not to run the vaccum cleaner during the daylight hours, play music, have the TV turned on too loud and would generally tiptoe around them so as to not stress them out. Being the responsible pet owner that I was I had to examine their stools daily for too loose or too soft texture, and every night after the sun set they had their free time out of their huge cage. I let them run/hop through the living room for a couple of hours. If anyone is considering getting a chinchilla know that there's ALOT to those little cuties becides just feeding and watering. Remember that the dust that collects around the house from the daily dust baths was beyond a chalange. I would not recomend them as they were pretty high maintence and, although they were so, so cute, they required so much more then a hamster, gerbil, rat, guinea pig, or bunny.

to: i adore my dogs. a very excellent post you gave on the care of chinchillas. i have to agree that they are alot of work. (as is any animal if one truely cares for it.) i did ALOT of reading on them before and after i asked my dad if i could rescue my friend's. out of the rodent family, they are probally my favorite and i still would consider gettting one.

i wish everyone would read up on pets before they get them, just so they know what kind of work needs to be done. i had parakeets at one time. i lost them years ago, but was considering getting one again, and decided to do some brushing up on their care. mostly looking into types of sicknesses.

It takes the same amount of work, just fewer supplies to have 1 as opposed to 4. They still need everything I mentioned in order to have a comfortable, happy life. They move and jump so much like squirrels, the cages have to be huge...both wide and tall with pearches and platforms as well as nesting boxes so the chins can be get their necessary daytime sleep. Plus the daily freedom romp outside of the cage in a large room free of electrical wires. I suggest getting a few good chinchilla books before considering one, but that's just my suggestion. There are alot of chinchillas out there who are owned by people who don't know the first thing about successfully housing chinchillas and they live less happily and often very stressed lives, sometimes dying from blockages or dehydration or heart attacks from extreme stress. People don't realize how important it is to have an absolutely silent house during daylight hours is. I have always been into studying and reading LOTS about the animals I owned. I learned alot and I did not cut corners. My chinchillas were happy and healthy. Of all my small pets I would have to say rats are my all time favorite. The rats had more personality, they were trainable, and they were more gentle and less sensetive to daytime noise. Much, much easier and more fun. I could actually take rats places, and they would just sit on my shoulder. The rats never got mad and never bit. One of my chinchillas, Pica, was never tame. She was just like a wild animal. Sometimes when I walked by the cage too closly and she felt threatened, she would let off this little chatter/chirp sound and if I did not get away from her cage in a hurry she would stand up on her hind legs and spray pee on me. It's one of their defenses. It was hard to get out of the way fast enough. Like I said, there is alot more to chinchillas then the adorable appearance http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I do like them alot but I just want to advise people of the work that goes into raising them properly so people don't impulse buy and end up neglecting the animal because they don't know what kind of home chinchillas really need.

again, another excellent post! impulse buying is the worst type. and it's usually the animals that suffer for it.
i was aware of the things you mentioned about chinchillas.
i hope that it helps other people realize the other side of chinchilla care.
(as far as quietness...i need it while i'm sleeping and awake, so no problem there. no tv! no radio! no kids/teens out front! ...i'll yell at them if they're making too much noise. heck, i'm only 20 and i'm already an old biddy. and i like to sleep during the day), so i think a chinchilla and i could get along rather well. i just don't have time right now, and i'd have to wait until my dog passes on now.

Hey that's neat http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif I don't say this often but you seem like you would provide the perfect home for a chinchilla! When I was working in the pet shop I turned many people off chinchillas. The owners of the shop were amazing and they really looked out for the well being of the animals so they were glad I studied up on so many animals. And when a home was truly wrong, they were so glad I discouraged impulse buys. I had knowledge of everything but fish, and for some reason reading about owning fish never interested me too much. I knew alot about the birds, ferrets, chinchillas, and the other rodents.

Hey, when I was in high school I was so unlike the other kids. I was absolutely obsessed with my animals, and not the usual teen stuff. I was so faciniated by my animals, and they all got the best care that I was capable of. As well as having chinchillas, I had a terrarium that was so big I could walk into it. I had lots of different types of lizards and I would lye on my bed and watch them for hours incredibly facinated by them. Also, I would sit and watch the birdfeeder that I put outside of my window and was in total awe of the wild birds. I was so different then a normal h.s. kid. I just had different interests then most of the kids. I liked to be different then the other kids, and I loved having so much knowledge of other stuff then just academics.

Hey what city in MI do you live in? I am in Troy, but I am sure you saw that. And I am really close to your age, I was so mature for my age when I was 20, which is why I felt I could house a chinchilla properly. I wish you luck, I bet you are going to be a great home for one! Good luck!

wow! you sound like me. whenever i didn't have homework i'd be spending my extra time reading or interacting with or watching nature or my pets. sometimes i would hang out w/ friends, but along the way i'd "smell the roses".

sounds like a good pet shop you worked at. most i rather not trust. that's neat how the owners were though.

pets that i've had: countless fish. many which lived long healty lives. three parakeets. (one met an untimly demise. which i will cry about until my last breath.) several frogs. two crickets. two red spotted newts. four dogs. two in my infantcy and two later on. and the Easter bunny i got to watch over for one week...until her owner came to claim her. no joke...it was the easter bunny. long story, but very cute. (and some other pets that i've happened to rescue along the way and help find their people.)

i live in bay county. (that's as much as i release over the internet.)

thanks for the compliment on my skills. i really need the confidence right now. my betta was doing fine and now he's starting to float. i just fixed a problem over the past two weeks and now this! and it was sunday, so i couldn't call the best pet shop for fish knowledge in town. (and the other one i wouldn't even give the satisifaction of a call. can you say "puppy mill"?!) so i am anciously waiting for morning to come. i took on this life and i'm not going to give up on him. i hated bettas and he has taught me to drown that prejudice. (jeeze! i've never seen such a prolonged "death" float before. usually a day or two and they're gone, so i was thinking something else is going on, since it's been over a week. but today he got alot worse. i'm so worried!) sorry, just needed to vent.

I love my chins but even though they are the allergy free pet I managed to become so . So I must sell my last pair. I have a Black Velvet female ,and a standard grey male. If any one is intrested please e-mail me for more details. I have raised chins for 10 years it is weird to now become sneezing around them.

i'm not completly experienced w/ chins, but from my knowledge, it's all in how they are raised and on their individual personality. my friends was very affectionate. not the same thing you get from a dog, but affectionate none the less. and i've heard tales of where people had a hard time even getting close to one's cage w/out getting sprayed.
