How was your first day training?

Hi everyone! My little girl is 5 months today :)
Snowy is starting her training class on Tuesday and I am so excited about it :D
How was your first day training, everyone? Please share.

Katie did wonderful her first day. Tori is another story..lol. She is always too busy wanting to know what the other pups are doing. Not much hope for that girl. :rolleyes:

Best of luck. The most important thing is to have fun with it. Its a great way to spend some time with your pup.

I'm sure Snowy will enjoy it. There are 4 jack russells in her class. One of them is Daisy, Snowy's friend. They play together every Sunday.

Snowy have a wonderful time in training.

Sheba was great on her first day of training and

Penny loved her puppy pre school class, but only the playing part. She did not learn any of the commands at all in her class :o.

Clover was very barky and scared of the other dogs when she first started. But to look at her now she is the sweetest, most well behaved dog ever. All the hard work payed off with her.

Theo was terriefied the first night of puppy pre school, and it did not get any better after that. He was well ahead of the other pups regarding his obedience work though and only went to try and socialise.

Elvis, well what can i say he was terrible :o. He has a problem with other dogs onlead and did not like the other pups at all. By the end of the 4 weeks he had made friends with one out of about 6 pups in our class. But like Theo he was well ahead in his obedience.

The first day? hmm... it kind of suck. I can't get Gigi's attention at all, she keep running to the other owner for their treats :o :rolleyes: ... the rest of the class was a struggle too... I didn't learn the key is to have the right treats after we had clicker class. Since then it's sooooooooo much better. My advise will be find out what Snowy love the best and take those with you for those "special moments". lol. Good luck and have fun!

Kai was too old by a week to take the puppy class so we had to take an obedience class when he was about 6 months old. It was horrible. :o He knew all the commands before classes even started but he never did them in class. He always wanted to play with the other dogs and loved barking at them when we watched them do recall. The trainer called it "herding" :p.

When he was a bit older, I enrolled him and Kaedyn in another obedience class. They did wonderfully in that. Kai ended up taking advance obedience right after.

Well Bon's first puppy class he was terrified. Of the people, the other dogs, walking through the door:rolleyes: Needless to say he was scared of everything.
But now he's finished his puppy class (did awesome) and we are in beginners obedience.
The first night was terrible. He didn't want to do anything. So many new dogs to sniff, so many new people to meet. He just couldn't help himself too many new smells.I didn't care though. One look from him (even when he isn't listening) and I just melt...or laugh:D He definately makes me laugh!

Good luck and most of all have fun. Don't let it get you down if Snowy has bad days...we all do! I'm sure she'll do great!

Gonzo was horrible. brace yourself! lmao! Seriously, if your dog is very dog-reactive (he is in love with other dogs, and used to completely forget I existed when around them) then she might be a little bit of a challenge. But, once I got his "watch me" down really well, he is the star doggy in our classes :)

oh, and Jenfer is soo right! I suggest Red Barn soft dog food in a roll.. you take peices and roll them into little meatballs. Soft treats of any kind work MUCH better than biscuits, biscuits also crumble everywhere which leaves your dog licking crumbs off the ground instead of listening to you... :rolleyes:

Venus was awesome her first day. She always just wanted to please us, and would do anything for us.

Chloe...she just went this past fall (she was 3) to a puppy preschool, so she already knew the commands. We did it mainly for socialization and for a chance to spend some time together. She did great, expect for the first day when the trainer tried to pick her up. She didn't like that at all...growled at her actually :rolleyes:

Sahara...just like Bon, she was nervous the first day (must be something about big dogs?!?!). As long as we have the treats to keep her attention, it worked out all right.

Snowy had been on the waiting list since she was 3 months old. There was nothing I could do eventhough I wanted to start earlier. Anyway I'm really looking forward to seeing how will the puppies behave on the first day. The instructor said the first day is more about getting to know each other than proper training.

I took Snowy to her first training day last night. Personally I think it is quite a small room for that many dogs (15 in the class +10 waiting for the next one) but I guess they want to give lots of people the opportunity to train their dogs. I could not quite hear half of what Pat (the instructor) was saying in class as there was just lots of noise, especially with the big dogs barking, and Pat was talking to one side of the class only. Snowy wasn't really paying attention at me last night. She must have been so excited to see all the dogs.

I must really do my homework and start training Snowy to sit when she is on my side, not only when she is in front of me. Snowy walks a bit fast so the only way she walks on heel is when I walk fast. I know this is wrong because the dog should follow the handler's pace, not the other way around. When I asked the other trainer (I forgot her name) she said put treats on your left hand and she will just follow the smell. Well.. easy if you have a 30" border collie like she does, not so easy when you have a 10" jack russell like I do. Snowy's head is no where near my hand and the only way she can sniff the treats is when I bend over or when she jumps. She said it may be better to use toys with smaller breed and they are going to show it next week.

I am afraid I do not 100% agree with what they say on the guide sheet like not putting toys on the floor and encouraging the dog to play by herself... I am not going to remove snowy's toys at all because I in fact do not mind that she plays by herself sometimes. I am however quite pleased to learn new techniques to train the dogs. I appreciate there are different techniques and if you know them you can chose what works for you.

The training can only get better from now - that is me being optimistic. Once Snowy is used to seeing so many dogs in one room hopefully she will pay more attention at me. I really hope that by the end of the training Snowy will become an obediant dog.

Happy is the only one I took to actual training classes, she was 11 weeks old and in a class full of adult dogs lol Happy graduated top in her class, BUT I did NOT follow the methods of the class, I went purly for socialization not that that was much good lol they had this stupid rule about dogs not being allowed anywhere near each other :confused: everytime Happy barked the instructer made me scruff Happy and yell "NO" in her ear. she was 11 weeks old for gods sakes! being the shy person that I am it was more like pick her up and say "no" lol only one class that I evert took with Happy was good, it was private. another one I took Happy too, would yell at her and grab her when she was obviously scared, and then ordered she be on a prong collar because she is such a bad dog :confused: we never came back to that one lol
