Sled Dog Classic set to make tracks at Punderson
By John Benson

In Northeast Ohio,Sled dog racing seems as foreign as walking on the moon.
Sure,we have the snow, but we lack the necessity. That is especially true Beacause these part's haven't been a barren tundra since the glaciers receded 20,000 years ago.
But every year for the past 28 winters, dog sled racers and there Canines have come to the Geauge County.Tourism Council Sled Dog Classic at Punderson State Park in Newbury tonship.
This year competition is Scheduled jan.8-9.
The road to becoming a sled dog enthusuast begins differently for everyone. Some start with love of the Alaskan and Siberian husky, while other are tranfixed from the early age after reading Jack London's "The call of the Wind" or watching the feature film "Iron Will"
"There are alot of people who read things by Gary Paulsen ('Windsong' and "Dogteam')That have always imagined traveling across the north county with a sled and a team of Huskies pulling thrm,"said race secretary and Siberian popular Husky Club of Greater Cleveland Secretary Bobbie Plamer.
Palmer said sled dog racing became in the early 1900's in Alaska. Then spread across the northen part of United States into New England, and eventually, any state that had enough snow.
While it's not the Iditarod, interest continues to increase among weekend warriors looking to add a little thrill to their lives.Such is the case with Montville resident Brain Nebelski, who makes his dog sled race debut this weekend at Punderson.
