Police chief's advice: 'Feed stray dogs'

An Indian police chief is asking bank managers to feed stray dogs to encourage them to guard their premises.

Shivaji Mahan Cairae, the director deneral of police in Jarkhand, also wants post office officials to try the same tactic, reports The Telegraph of Calcutta.

In a letter to the superintendents of police of all districts, he said that police department studies revealed that crime was reduced in areas where people fed stray dogs.

A senior police official said: "It has been seen that when dogs are taken care of in a particular area, they develop a sense of loyalty towards their patrons and act as an alarm system.

"They start barking even at the slightest unusual movement in the vicinity and that helps in maintaining security."

Bankers and post office officials have criticised the suggestion saying they expected more from the state's chief of police.

R B Sahay, a spokesman for the Central Bank of India Employees Union, said: "A large number of bank branches operating in the remote areas of the state are not given proper security cover by the police.

"Instead of doing the needful, the director general of police comes up with this bizarre suggestion. It reflects the lack of seriousness on the part of the police department."
