I hope Kimmy doesn't mind me starting this as a new thread, but since the other threadis pretty long and last night's update was pretty good, I wanted to make sure people saw it...( this was posted at about 8:50 am EST)

Just talked to Kimmy ~

Andy is "OK" and
OUT of Surgery

He's a really Sick Puppy, though :(

The quick story is that he's on "blood thinners" to prevent blood clots
from forming in his lungs...
and the thinned blood is *leaking* -
he was bleeding internally. :(

Early this morning his blood pressure suddenly dropped and they
thought something tore or pulled loose -
so rushed hin into surgery and had to give him a
blood transfusion.

Didn't do major open chest surgery - just went back into the
little slit they used yesterday...
but found "nothing wrong" - no tears or pull-aparts.

He's on a respirator to ease the burden on his lungs;
and they will try to adjust his meds to correct the blood consistency.

He should be moving back up to the 8th Floor ICU rooms soon.

PLEASE - Keep the PT Prayers flowing for Andy and Kimmy!!

*Spidey-Boy*
is still "Doin OK" ~

Kimmy reports that >>>

He's in his own private ICU room -
hooked up to enough hospital equipment that he could probably
launch a shuttle if he knew which buttons to push...

Still on the ventilator to make breathing easier; and heavily sedated
so he doesn't *fuss* with the tube in his mouth and throat.

The Nurses don't want folks "bothering" Andy, so
Kimmy, Mom & Dad all went home for a breather.
They'll head back in a while to squeeze in another visit with Andy
before the Ward Police do the 8 PM *raid* and throw everyone
out for the night.

If all goes well, they *might* take him off the ventilator for
the night - but no promises have been made.

Please keep the Kind Thoughts and Prayers flowing for Andy and Kimmy!

Amy, that was sweet of you to start a new thread.

It's been a rough day, that's for sure. We also found out that he did have a blood clot  along with the blood loss and that was removed. It's heart breaking to see him in this state. He looks so fragile.

I don't think I'll be able to fully relax until he's out of ICU.

They originally said they'd take him off the respirator an hour after the surgery....then they wanted to wait a little longer....and a little longer.

So while it's in, he's heavily sedated. The nurses are watching him like a hawk.

Thank you so much all of you, for your continued support. You are all blessings. I'd give you all a huge hug if I could see you.

Love and HUGS,
me, Andy, and the family

Oh my! What an ordeal this whole thing has been! I sure hope he recovers for good this time and can come home and really start healing.

Terry says if you need to get some meat on his bones, just send him here for a week - Terry will fatten him up. McDonald's double cheeseburgers everyday for lunch with large fries! Oooh, now I'm starting to feel sick. ;)

I'm so glad everything went well today. Will be thinking of you both and praying he gets better once and for all!

The "insider" can't reach Kimmy -
Her cell phone may have a dead battery... :(

I checked with the ICU Nurses and they kicked all the Family out
for the night at about 8 PM.

Andy is "OK" and resting / sleeping like they want him to do.

They didn't remove the ventilator yet - so he'll have to put up
with that discomfort all night. :(

Nurse was polite, and in her "I can't tell you ANYthing" way
hinted that Andy was really doing OK.
She said they would possibly remove the ventilator in the morning.

Don't know if we'll hear form Kim again tonight or not...
she's probably so tired she can hardly think.

More Prayers for Andy and Kimmy would be appreciated!!

Rest well, Andy ~ Hope you're feeling better by morning!!

Last uppiedate for the night:

Like Phred said, he'll be on the ventilator all night but he's so sedated he should sleep well. He said this morning before he went into surgery that he didn't sleep at all last night.

I got to the hospital at 7 and they were giving him 2 units of blood. His brother and I were a bit concerned but the nurses said his blood count had dropped a little and the doctor figured a few units wouldn't hurt. They didn't seem too concerned. As we were leaving the nurses said he'd get one more unit as a 'pick me up'.

They hope to remove the ventilator in the morning.

*fingers crossed*

The nurse said she'd call if there was a problem.

So no news is good news.

I love you guys!!! Night!

Andy's Breathing Tube should be *out* by now!! :D

Kimmy was greeted this morning by his Nurse announcing that
the Tech was on the way up to remove the breathing tube!! :D

Andy is still heavily sedated -
it will be a few hours before he really wakes up -
but he should be feeling a LOT better with the tube out.

Also means the Family can spend some quality time with him -
up to now they haven't been encouraged to either talk to or
"touch" him - they wanted him to remain quiet and resting...

He might not be ready for sprints down the hall -
but he's certainly in better condition than he was! ;)

Keep the PT Prayers and Good Wishes flowing ~
they MUST be working!!

Andy's *wakin up* :) and starting to communicate in *words*!! :)
He's still a bit *FUZZIE* and drifts off into La-La Land;
but he should be able to put together a full sentence pretty soon. :p

They took away ALL the supplemental oxygen (he's now breathing
plain ole room air) AND are slowly cranking up the bed from horizontal
to a more upright position.

The head White Coat visited and said it was time to quit goofin around -
Orders are that the Nurses are to have Andy SITTIN inna Chair
before lites out tonight!! :D

They've been rolling him around in the bed to limber him up;
and fluids are now flowing in and out to everyone's satisfaction.

Solid Food is still a distant memory, but he got a "Treat" - a Popsicle -
for being good!
Kim says she'll "bait" him into the chair with the promise of another popsicle!

Miz Kimmy is finally starting to sound a lil bit more "chipper" :) -
I think everyone is seeing *PROGRESS* being made! :)

Plans are for the Family to eat in the cateteria and then return
for the scheduled Chair Sitting!
Hopefully he'll be Out of Bed before 8 PM.

Kimmy is going to call her Boss and ask for tomorrow off.
She promises to *relaxe* a bit when they move Andy out of the ICU room
and into a "regular" room. I think that may happen sometime on Monday.

Let's all *Pray* for Andy getting his legs back in operation this evening -
a trip to the Chair might not seem like much - but to Andy it will
probably feel like a 5-mile Hike!

GO ANDY! Go *GET* that Chair!

Go, Andy, go! :)

I know how weird it is, and how strange to want to stand up, but not have your body respond like you expect it to. In fact, expect tons of "pins and needles" like after a really boring lecture hall ...

Kimmy, buy him the goofiest slippers you can find, so when he looks down, he'll grin. That also helps when he's up to walking, he'll be the talk of the floor - that's how it worked for me, when I had my great big tiger slippers - everyone was jealous of them, and they were really warm, too, which helps. Hospitals always seem cold - specially when you've just got one of those cotton "gowns" to keep you warm - NOT!

We're pulling for you! (That "we" includes my bell choir and church choir, too!)

Spent so much time *Talkin* he forgot to "get up". :p
(I think it was a lame excuse!)

Andy had a bunch of Visitors and started jabberin;
DID do some moving of his legs and feet;
just ran out of time to try the Chair Dash. :(

The Breathing Therapy Techs visited and gave him some breathing exercises -
He got several GOOD BOYs for his efforts!

Everyone seems *Pleased* with Andy's PROGRESS today!! :D

Then the Nurse came in about 7:30 and gave him a dose of
KnockOut Dropz that had him *snoring* in minutes...
so much for the Chair Dash!

Kimmy, I know that I have never met you or Andy, but when I read all these posts I was truly worried and I started to tear up. I have no idea how you are feeling or felt all weekend. Hang in there and everything will be ok soon. I’m so glad to hear that Andy is much better.

:)

Kimmy called just after I posted the 10 AM Tail ...

"Did you TALK to Andy this morning??"

He'd remembered he talked to "someone from PT" ...
But was a lil *fuzzie* about what he'd said. :p
Kimmy explained he was still a lil Loopie and didn't always
make a lot of sense yet.
I assured her he'd done just fine!

She went on to say that Andy was in *trouble* with the White Coats -
1) He'd only "picked" at his first solid food meal - breakfast
2) And said he'd rather *rest* than get up outta bed...

 Said Doc!
1) *EAT* what we give ya!!
2) PLAN on being OUT of bed - SOON!
Then Doc delivered "The Lecture" to Andy & the Folks. :D

Now we just had a 3:30 PM UppyDate from Kimmy >>>

They kicked him OUT of ICU - no more Andy-Sittin by the ICU Nurses!

Pulled ALL the Tubes & Monitors - all except the chest drain tube -
he might have that for a couple more days.
No more "Baffroom in Bed" - gotta "pee" ya gotta WALK
to the lil room!! :o

He's now down on the 5th Floor - "Regular" Room!
No *roomie* at present; but he could get one.

And the New Rules are:
he's gotta do some *Hikin in the Halls*;
*EAT* everything they give him;
and No more *sleepin in* all day!

They'll send him HOME :) when the chest tube stops dribblin drainage.
Could be ANY day now - all depends on the drainage from around his lungs.

Kimmy will stay till Andy's bed time (8 PM) tonight;
run to Andy's Fokls' House to pack up and post a quick Andy Tail;
then head for HER House to feed the "starvin" Kats.
Kia stays with Gram & Gramp (Kim's Folks) till the weekend.

Plans are for Andy to spend a couple nights at the Folks' House;
then move back to his apartment with his Roomies.

And the Roomies have THEIR Instructions, too!
Andy will be on an *enforced" EAT RITE programme!!
One roomie is a weight lifter / healthy eater type -
Guess what Andy is in for!? :p
*EAT this GOOD Food - or I'll SIT on ya!! :D

The Roomies, lil Brudder, and his Folks will continue the
frequent visits till Andy gets sent home.
Hopefully he'll be at the Folks or his own apartment by the weekend.

Few more PT Prayers to help keep us progressing and we should be
able to relaxe.

Andy didn't get out of bed a whole lot after being moved out of ICU. He would however, sit up and swing his legs over the side of the bed. He did this to eat and to "use the facilities" (aka: the bottle  ;) ). He hasn't quite made it to walking to the bathroom.

Though tomorrow he might. He should be scooting the halls in the new "bear claw" slippers I got him. ;) :D

As usual, I hated to leave him, though it was harder this time because I know I won't see him tomorrow. :(

Just got off the phone with Andy. He ate breakfast and sat up to do it. His lunch hasn't arrived yet and he hasn't got out of bed yet to do some 'hall shuffling'. He was actually surprised that he hadn't yet, but from what I hear, he will be very soon.

Colin (one of his roommates) had just arrived, and was chatting with the nurse while I was on the phone with Andy.

I overheard Colin emphasize that Andy needed to eat ALL of his food and Andy put me on hold and started to protest saying that he's always had 3 to 4 meals a day.

That upset me and I chewed him out and he readily admitted that he doesn't eat full meals like he should.

Not sure if he was really agreeing with me or just too tired to argue.

He started to sound a bit winded and asked if I'd call back later.

Hopefully he'll be more mobile when I check in again.

Kimmy, maybe you not seeing him today will be the incentive he needs to get up out of bed and *walk* to the baffroom. ;) Hopefully he knows the more he gets up and walks the quicker he'll be home and the quicker he's home the more he can see you again. See, you just gotta use the right incentive. ;)

Kim you need to have his Mom tell the nurses no in room company . They can wait for him to WALK to the waiting room to visit. He NEEDS to get off his butt and walk. I have work with people who fight getting up and it only slows down the healing process. 2 hours after my hubbys lung collapsed from not moving from his cancer surgruy the Doc made him get up so the lung didn't fill up with fluids. I don't mean to scary you but he has to get moving forall systems to work .

And I'd chide, No...you can't. You need to GET UP!

I just called him back and he said the nurses haven't even got him out of bed yet and walking.

I asked, "Don't you want out of the hospital?"

"Yes."

"Then tell the nurses you want out of bed!"

"Okay."

Though I'm sure the second I hang up, he'll just take a nap.

He sounds good, but tired. They've changed his meals to be high in protein.

Kim, when my Dad was in the hospital, it was nearly impossible to get the nurses to get him and get him walking. They were just to busy, running from room to room and doing all the grunt work and paper work for the Drs. :(

Anytime Andy has a visitor, the visitors need to make him go down the hallway and back at least once. We finally had to post this on Dad's door on fun colored paper. People started taking it seriously and he got a good bit of walking that way. :)

When I called at 7:30 p.m., Andy was just getting settled back into bed. The nurse only asked him to walk part way down the hall but Andy did some 'laps'. To the end of one hall, back down, past his room, around the corner, and back to his room. :)

When he got back, dinner had arrived and he ate some of it. When I talked to him, I encouraged him to eat some more, so he did.

He didn't wear his slippers though... :( He said next time...

I'm so glad to hear he's finally gotten up and going! Like Logan said, when my mom had quintuple (?)(5) bypass surgery, they had her actually sitting in a chair that night and up and walking the very next day! I was amazed at how quickly they got her up, but they said it was best for the patient. However, the nurses would NOT take no for an answer. They MADE her get up and get going - which it sounds like Andy's nurses are not doing. My mom's surgery was over 10 years ago now, so maybe the staffing situation has become worse in those 10 years - meaning maybe the nursing staff is understaffed more now as compared to 10 years ago and they just don't have the time to spend with him.

Anyway, glad to hear he's at least been up and about a little bit. :)

I worry so much about this! Is he not eating because he feels sick, or has this been a problem for a long time? I know you had mentioned something in an earlier post about him not getting enough nourishment to support his internal organs! :( Could he possibly have an eating disorder? Men do get them too .... it's just not as publicized as with women. I hope I am not out of line ... just concerned, and trying to offer any ideas that I might come up with??? :(

ramanth
11-17-2004, 03:51 PM
Hey Kim... I'm leaning towards eating disorder, though Andy just says he's too lazy to eat.

It's been going on for awhile now and I regret not getting him help sooner, but I sincerely hope this is a wake up call. He says it is.

Now for the Andy update: :D

Andy called me around 3 and we talked for close to an hour!! :D

He said he ate all of his breakfast and lunch. I think the doctor or dietician came in and really chewed him out this morning.

A nutritionist came in while he was on the phone with me, and I could hear the conversation. She gave him some paperwork on eating better and eating a high protein diet. He admitted to her that the past couple of meals at the hospital he would stop eating before he was full 'just because'. She praised him for eating all his breakfast and lunch.

I hope it continues. Andy said he put pictures up of us in the room as motivation. He also did a lot more walking and sitting in a chair today. He even carried the machine that his chest tube is connected to for a little bit while he walked. It weighs about 5 lbs, but he said it felt heavier.

He said he knows he needs to eat more.

I'm real encouraged by this. :)

Pictures up next!!!!

Andy looks pretty good. He'd look a lot better with more weight on him. If you think it's an eating disorder, then you should tell him that he'd look better heavier. see if there's another "inmate" on his floor that also needs to
be "out and about" that he could take a hike with.

Hooking him up with a friend might make walking the halls a
bit more enjoyable and longer lasting.

Of course, if she's a puller that might not be a good idea...could you imagine?! :p

Yeah! Way to go Andy! It's so good to see you looking so much better - and out for a hike too! What great news this morning! :D

Kimmy, in the pic of them out for a hike, is that his dad with him? Just curious because from behind, I could SWEAR that was my dad! Pants hanging down, hands in pockets, short hair, sweatshirt - I SWEAR!!!

Love the bear claw slippers, but now I can see why maybe he left them there for the first time. Seeing as how he might have been a little unsure on his feet to begin with, and then to have those on - they're HUGE! But I love them!

Great uppydate. :D

Just got off the phone with Andy. He said he was so full he was feeling nauseous so I did most of the talking and he listened.

What he did tell me was that he's been out of bed, but only to sit in the chair for a bit, that way he can stretch and get out of bed but stay plugged into the wall. (The chest tube machine is has to be plugged in to work so that's why walks have been brief)

They now have him back on the IV along with an antibiotic. Preventative, I think. That's also plugged into the wall. He said once that finishes (it'll be about a half hour), he'll take a walk.

His hemoglobin levels are up to 9 now. They were at 8 yesterday. 10 is normal for most males I believe.

He has a roomie now, but the guy was out at the moment having a heart catheter done. :( Once he's back he has to lay flat on his back and not move at all.

The fluids are slowing down, but there's still no set date on when Andy will be released.

LOL! That is the Drain Pump and I knew they unplugged it but I wasn't aware that batteries were included. :)

In fact the Nurse made Andy carry the Drain Pump on yesterday's walk. It's only 5 lbs. but Andy said it felt like a ton. :D

9:45 PM Andy Tail ~

Just got off the phone after a 15 minute *chat* with Andy ~
He sounds REALLY GOOD! :) :D

Sounded *chipper* and says he's actually starting to Feel Better!

Good News Abounds ~

He's been told the Drain Tube will be removed sometime tomorrow!

After a 24 hour observation period - with no complications -
they'll give him his *walkin papers* and

Release could / should be sometime Saturday. :)

If anyone has tried to call him -
[b](248) 652-5000 (Room 543-B) and been told
he's not accepting calls - that's not correct.
Ask for his Nurse's Station and ask them to put you through.
They'll check with him first - then put you through.

He's a lil *nerbus* about the tube removal -
they don't do much in the way of pain killers :( -
but he said he'd hope for the best!
He thinks a lil *pain* might be worth it to be RID of the darn tube
and it's companion - the drain Pump!

A few PT Prayers for a painLESS removal will be 'preciated!

We all WISH You the BEST tomorrow, Andy!!

Sleep Well! ;)

Andy don't worry about the drains coming out - a couple of BIG breaths and it's done. You'll feel so much better then - and of course will want to eat LOTS!

Just got off the phone with Andy.

The chest tube is out and he is wrapped up real tight.

He said it hurt a lot and felt like his chest was being crushed on that side. He went rigid and started hyperventilating. Not good. He said the doctors and nurses were trying real hard to calm him down.

He was out of breath when I talked to him. Poor guy. The doc told him to rest and try to sleep and keep breathing normally. No hyperventilating or too shallow of breaths.

They'll keep an eye on him, take some x-rays later, and if all looks good, he can go home tonight! :D

I really think that being at home will be helpful for a quick and full recovery. That nurse Kia will be a sigt for sore eyes, I'm sure!

Sounds like the worst of it is over now - the tube is out!! Hurray, time to celebrate!! :D

When my mom and dad were in a bad car accident a few years ago, my dad had some sort of tube in his chest also. He was unconcious for, like, 48 hours or something like that, and when he finally woke up he was a little "loony in the head" since he took a blow to his head. I can remember visiting him after they took the tube out and we asked how he was doing and if the doctor had been in. He said, and I quote, "Yeah that someb***h was here. Poked me a cupla times, punched me in the chest then left!" I remember looking at my brother and we both rolled our eyes and laughed. The nurses had told us he had the chest tube taken out and that it hurts a lot when they do it, so we knew what he was talking about. :D

Good to hear the news just keeps getting better! Now if we can just keep the boy eating like he should, we'll soon be home free!:)

Andy just had x-rays done. The lung specialist mentioned that if there is still a leak, a new chest tube will need to be put in.

Wouldn't it of been smarter to take X-rays before removing the chest tube then?!

Andy asks for good vibes! He's nervous as you may expect.

If there is no problem, he can go home tonight. On Tuesday he'll go back to have the stitches taken out and after that will start some form of physical therapy.

Will they really send him home tonight? Seems very quick -compared with over here. Surely a full day after tube withdrawl would be better?

All the Tubes & Monitors are out / gone and his
Nurse read his X-ray and said it looked good / clear to her.

Afternoon Nurse (Meg) said last night he wasn't goin anywhere for
24 hours... when I just spoke with her and asked WHY was Andy
still there - she *laffed* and said:
"What'd I tell you last night!??
I knew he wasn't leaving till Saturday!"
Doc is due in tomorrow (Saturday) for a Final Inspection.

Andy still sounds *GREAT* and is looking forward to the BreakOut!

Kimmy should be getting to the apartment tonight with Kia.
Andy is going to stay with his Folks for a week or so starting tomorrow;
then move back into the Condo with his two Roomies.

I didn't 'splain that so good... :o
(The "Two Roomies" may NOT be who ya thought they were! :p

Kimmy lives by herself, with Kia anna Kats, in her own apartment.
While Andy was hospitalized, when Kim visited at the Hospital,
she stayed with Andy's Folks at their house;
and Kia bunked with Gram & Gramps - Kim's Folks.

Andy normally lives, along with Two (Male) Roomies, in their Condo.

During his initial recovery, Andy is staying at his Parents' Home -
so Mom can hopefully *fatten him up*!
BUTT... since Andy has a slight "Fur Alergy" :( -
Mom wants to keep the house "Fur-Free" while Andy is in temporary residence -
so Miz Kia isn't welcome. :(

So where's a Dawggie to stay??

At the GUYs' CONDO!! :D

So while Kimmy & Kia are in towne to check up on Andy over the weekend;
they're moving into Andy's Room at the Condo.

I think The Roomies are going to be in charge of Kia-Sitting
while Kimmy visits with Andy at the Folks' House -
Mom also worries that Kia may get a lil too *rowdy* showering her
effections :) on Andy ... so Kia Visits may be "limited" till
Andy gets a bit stronger.

Dunno if that really "clears" anything up;
but at least it "reads" a lil better!

(I should leave the posting to Cinder & Smokey -
they don't seem to dig NEARLY as deep a hole as their Dad does!) :o

I went out and visited Andy Sunday evening. He was chipper and very mobile. :D

We played kissy face on the couch for a bit. :o ;) :D

He doesn't really sit in one place for a long time. He stands for periods of time and "zips" about the house, moving from chair to chair. :)

A physical therapist stopped by Sunday morning and gave Andy some paperwork on exercises he can do. He uses his right arm quite a bit but doesn't have full range of it yet. His incision hinders it a bit.

Which by the way is a lot bigger than we first thought. It's about a 5 inch incision that is stapled shut. Where the chest tube was inserted is two carved out 'holes'. We took pictures and I'll post links once his mom sends them to me. So those that are curious can look. :)

He's been packing in food, but you can't tell now of course. It'll be awhile before a noticable difference.

Andy's mom asked if I'd be visiting for Thanksgiving and before I could reply, Andy said 'only if Kia can come'. His mom agreed and that's that. Kia and I will be there for the weekend. I have that Thurs. and Friday off work.

So it'll be a nice 4 day weekend.

Andy says hi!
