View Full Version : Storm Needs Surgery ASAP!!!

Hi everyone.:( I had to take Storm to the ER again tonight. It's been exactly 2 months since he's been there. He was showing some signs of blockage again so I took him just to be on the safe side. They were very busy so I had to wait a while. He became completely blocked while I was waiting so I had to leave him there.:(
When I got home, the doctor called and said that he has so much scar tissue on his penis that they're unable to catheterize him.:( This means that he needs surgery asap. No surgeon was available this evening so I have to pick him up tomorrow morning and then I'll be taking him to surgery. She also recommended that a board certified surgeon perform this surgery so there are 3 different locations to choose from. I'll find out tomorrow which one it will be. AmberLee will be going with me for emotional support. Please send some prayers and positive thoughts Storm's way. Thanks in advance and thanks for being there for me AmberLee.

Purrayers for Storm!!

As many know, Boots, da Kat, is a Survivor :)
of the Re-Plummin Sir Jury...
and shows NO ill effects from it.

He was a Kone-Head for a couple weeks,
ate a LOT of antibiotics,
and had a LOT of wadder pumped down his throat...
but never seemed in pain or discomfort during recovery.

He's hoping Storm does just as well!!

Thanks for all of the prayers everyone.:) It has been a very long stressful day but Storm's surgery went very well. Yes, he had the same surgery that Cirrus had so now I'm much more prepared. The doctor also did an ultrasound to check out his kidneys and she found a cyst on one of kidneys. She said that it's nothing to worry about. I sure hope that this won't cause him any pain in the future.
I'm so glad that AmberLee was there with me. She made the whole ordeal much easier for me. Hopefully if all goes well, I'll be able to take him home on Sunday morning. I also bought a large cage for him to help confine him. I sure hope this will work. I'm also still waiting for his blood test results to come back. The ER doctor was concerned that he might have a kidney infection because they found a lot of bacteria in his urine. He didn't have any crystals or stones this time so I think his blockage was due to scar tissue and possibly a very bad UTI. Thanks again for all of your concerns. PT prayers are the best.:) I'll keep you updated when I can.

Poor Storm. How painful this must be for him.Why does this happen so much in cats? They get blocked so easy.I've never heard that they get blocked with scar tissue though. That's worse than crystals. Both are bad.I wish I knew why this happens to them.It seems so very common.I can't imagine the pain all the homeless ones get in when this happens when noone is around to help them.Prayers for Storm from here to him.

The surgeon called me this morning and said that Storm's doing very well. He's peeing on his own and should be able to go home tomorrow morning. I'll be picking him up at 9am unless her schedule changes.:) Now I just have to set up his cage, litter box, bed, food and water dishes. I'll try to take some pictures of him tomorrow depending on how he's feeling. He's going to have a bald tummy and bottom though. Thanks again for all of your concerns and get well wishes.:D

Kelly, the surgery that he had is called perineal urethrostomy. They basically cut off the tip of his penis so that he now has a larger opening. They also remove all other external male parts so now he looks just like a female cat on the outside and he'll also pee like one too. Some cats can continue to get bad UTI's because of the larger opening. Hopefully he won't. Cirrus has been fine so far.

Storm isn't the happiest of cats at the moment, but his Meowmy has made a mini "cat castle" for him to recuperate in. He let me hug him this morning and he's just the sweetest little guy. KAK says he has a lot less bruising and trauma than his brother Cirrus had after the surgery. Here's fingers crossed that he settles down a bit and lets her get some sleep tonight. He's doing a marvelous impression of a 'Pitiful Kitty Cat' that could rip your heart out. But he'll heal SO much faster and better inside the cage -- well, at least if he will if he stops rolling in his water dish, etc.

Storm is back at the vet today.

His bladder size is normal; KAK is having trouble learning to distinguish it herself by palpatation -- apparently it's tricky to do at first.

Apparently the vet thinks Storm is holding his pee in because it's painful to go. When forced to go there's a lot of blood, but after the operation this is normal. Storm's borderline dehydrated, the vet will give him fluids under the skin. (I can't spell the medical term for this, it's something like subcutaneous?) KAK left his medicines with him; the vets will give it while she's at work.

The vet's encouraging in that Storm is big, strong, and sweet boy. He's also very clever which is working against him a bit right now -- he's doing things that short term feel better but make long term healing slower. KAK's voice is breaking when she gives me updates. If you would pray for her and her boy, I'm sure this will help.

Thanks for the update Amberlee. Continued prayers for Storm and KAK are on the way! Poor thing, I know how bloody and painful that surgery looks (I assisted in this very surgery when I was working at Gilroy Vet)...so I can understand why Storm isn't wanting to go pee. Do you know if Storm was getting painkillers?
You're right Amberlee, subcutaneous fluids (or simply sub-Q) is what Storm will be getting for his dehydration. This will also make him go pee, so hopefully he'll start going instead of holding it in.
It will take some time to heal, but I'm confident that Storm will pull through.
Lots of love and **hugs**, purrs and licks from the Thrash household.

Yes, he's on a pain patch through tomorrow, then he switches to a liquid painkiller that gets rubbed inside his cheek (if he cooperates) or squirted inside his mouth (which is most likely, apparently).

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm sure KAK will find comfort from your concern for her wonderful boy.

Thanks again everyone and especially you AmberLee.:) I just have to try to give Storm more fluids since he doesn't seem to want to drink from his water dish. I'm now adding some water to his food mixture which is wet food and dry food mixed together. I'm also going to squirt some water in his mouth with a couple of large syringes. I really like the my new vets office. Everyone is very nice. The doctor that I saw today called me at home since he wasn't able to talk to me when I picked up Storm. He said that Storm is a wonderful cat and is in very good shape. Everyone is amazed that he'll soon be 9 years old because they all think he looks much younger.:)
Last night Storm got one of paws stuck in his e-collar and was thrashing around the cage.:( I had to take him out and calm him down. Hi everyone. I'm sorry that I haven't updated you sooner but I've been quite busy. Last night was a very difficult night.:( Storm refused to eat so I force fed him some of his canned food mixed with yogurt. Shortly after that he had a lot of diarrhea.:( I had talked to the surgery place before and they recommended that I feed him chicken and rice to help his diarrhea.

I called AmberLee and she was able to give me a little bit of rice and some canned pumpkin too. My roommate gave me a chicken breast too. I cooked the rice and chicken last night and Storm ate some of it this morning.:) I was also able to force feed some of the pumpkin down him last night. He just seems miserable to me.:( The pains meds help relax him so he doesn't cry at night. I have enough antibiotics to last me until this Friday and now I have to pick up more antibiotics to give him for 10 more days after that. I sure hope his tummy won't be too stressed from all of this.:(

I'm also going to try to buy a bag of sub-q fluids because this really seemed to make him feel better on Monday. The receptionist just needs to ask the vet if this will be okay. Hopefully it will because he sure doesn't like me squirting water down his throat.:( I think he may have a slight sore throat from the anesthesia.

Thanks again for all of your concerns and many thanks again to AmberLee for being there for me and allowing me to borrow the rice and pumpkin. BTW Sky loved the pumpkin and licked the bowl clean.

If he WON'T drink, the Sub-Q method will keep him hydrated;
but Boots, da Kat, was NOT fond  of "drinking" through
the needle stuck between his shoulder blades, either!

Try adding some "Flavour" to his water cup:
Add some gravy or meat juice...
Float some Kat Crunchies in the water...
Add some liquid from a can of Tuna...
ANYthing to add some odor to the water.

And SKIP the KLAM Juze! :p
THAT dindn't go over well AT ALL!

Thanks for all of your concerns.:)

Hi everyone. This morning started out badly. Storm refused to eat his chicken and rice and then had more diarrhea.:( I then showed him his dry food which is Royal Canin s/o formula and he ate some of this. Since he had more diarrhea, I force fed him some more pumpkin but this was a big mistake because he ended up throwing up his breakfast.:( Hopefully he didn't throw up his antibiotic too. I didn't see it but he may have.

During my lunch break, I came home to give him his afternoon pill. He fought me and fought me. He refused to swallow it and began drooling quite a bit. The pill began to dissolve and went all over his lips and chin. Hopefully he was able to absorb some of it. He almost bit my fingers off too.:( This evening he was much more alert and acting very hungry. He was still refusing the chicken and rice so I fed him his dry food again and ate almost all of it.:) He's also peed 2 times today and is fairly good about receiving his sub-q fluids. I'm hoping that tomorrow will be a better day.

Thanks again for all of your concerns. I can't wait until this is all merely a memory.:)

Hi Tracie,
I can sympathize w/you re giving Storm his pills; even when I think I've been successful, I later find it later on the floor or elsewhere. Pill poppers have been very successful for me. I'd say that 99% of the time, I'm successful w/administering the meds. Have you tried that?

Hi everyone. Thanks again for all of your prayers and concerns.:) This morning Storm refused to eat again so I wasn't going to force anything down him just yet. Now he's on liquid antibiotics so it's a lot easier to give these to him. It smells like strawberries but he hates the taste. He was a very good boy today and rested the whole day. While I was out, I decided to buy him some gerber graduates turkey sticks and some chicken and gravy.

For his dinner, I tried to give him some dry food first and he ate very little of it. He didn't want his canned food either so Sky finished that off. I then smashed a turkey stick and put it on a plate. His eyes lit up and gobbled it down.:) I used to give these to him as a treat and it was one of his favorites. I'm so glad that he likes these again. I'm going to try to get him to eat another one later tonight. Hopefully these won't cause him to have more diarrhrea because he had some more of it this morning.:(

Thanks again for all of your concerns. This really means a lot to me.:D

He loved the turkey sticks so much that he was meowing for another one before I even offered one to him. He inhaled this one too.:) I bought them at Albertson's and they're in with the baby foods. They're Gerber Graduates Turkey Sticks and come in a little glass jar of 6. They also come in chicken and beef flavor.:)

Storm will still only eat the turkey sticks so I bought 6 more jars of them. I bought them at Target this time and I think that they are cheaper here. He's still having diarrhea so now he's also on 2ml of kaopectate 3 times a day. Hopefully this will help him. His appetite is becoming much better because he woke me up last night at 2:30am because he wanted more turkey sticks. He ate 1 1/2 of them and ate the same amount this morning. He also seems much more alert than he did before. He's now off the pain meds too. He felt so good this am that he jumped up on top of his cage. I quickly got him down and put him back in his cage. Luckily his stitches weren't damaged.:)

He was eating the chicken and rice for 2 days and I even tried to give him some plain chicken but he just didn't want it. He also didn't like the gerber chicken and gravy that I bought for him. He sniffed it and turned his nose up at it. The only thing he seems to want is turkey sticks. I sure hope that he'll be able to go back to eating his regular food after all of this is over and that he doesn't become too picky.

Yes AmberLee, this coming Friday is the big take out the stitches day.:D He still has to take his liquid antibiotics until Mon. Nov. 29th though so everything won't be exactly back to normal yet.:( When I got home from having dinner with my parents, he was crying for his dinner. I decided to give him 2 turkey sticks but that was too much for him to eat. I'll try to feed him again before I go to bed so that he doesn't wake me up again in the wee hours of the am.;)

Hi everyone. It was another bad morning. Since Storm is now on two kinds of meds 3 times a day, I was trying to give them to him one after the other. Well this morning he had a gag reflex and ended up throwing up both the antibiotics and kaopectate.:( He would only eat a little bit of his dry food. Later in the am he did eventually eat a turkey stick.

I only gave him his antibiotics this afternoon because I was afraid he'd gag again. This evening he only wanted his dry food and ate about half of it. He also had some diarrhea sometime during the day but not as much as before. I gave him the kaopectate as soon as I got home and now he only needs another dose of antibiotics.

Due to all of the stress and lack of sleep, I think I'm now getting sick.:( I had a sore throat last night and still have it today. I also had a headache most of the day and have been having body aches too. I sure hope it's only a mild cold and not the flu.:( Now I need to go give Storm his meds and give myself some meds too.

Tracey, I cannot recommend this product more highly.

It is called Airborne - and is a tablet that you place in half a glass of water and drink it. (sorta like an alkaseltzer). It was developed by a teacher who was tired of bringing home all of the colds from her students.

It can be purchased at Trader Joe's and I believe Von's Pavillions.
I got it at Trader Joe's. It is $5.95 for ten tablets. You can take one every three hours which I highly recommend.

It is made from herbs and vitamins. Read the label so you are comfortable with the ingredients.

Everyone down here is swearing by this stuff. I know that it helped me - but you do need to take it early on in your cold.

They recommend taking it right before you are in a crowd of people or take an airplane flight. It just boosts your immune system.

Sorry this is so long......and no, I don't own part of the company....wish I did!

I can imagine the stress you are under dealing with poor Storm.

Stress can really knock you out, and you've had so much lately! I've got a toddy recipe that uses fresh ginger, lemon, and a dab of cayenne pepper in hot water. It doesn't sound too good, but it's really great. I'll dig the recipe up and PM you (or post it...)

Oh no, Tracey. If it's not one thing it's another. :( I sure hope that Airborne stuff helps you beat your cold soon.

I now know all about the stress you're going through and I sure hope Storm is better real soon. How much longer does he need to take all the meds? I think the good news is that he is eating on his own, and if he's fighting you on the pills, that usually means he's feeling better - although I know it makes it tougher on you.

Thanks everyone.:) I would've replied sooner but I've been having computer problems again. I just switched to comcast and my connection hasn't been what it should be. I think it's a bit too late to take airborne now since my cold has now become worse but thanks for the advice. I'll try this in the future.

Storm hasn't been eating as well the last few days so I think he's been losing weight. I can feel his backbone and part of his tail bone much more than I could before.:( He's been refusing to eat his turkey sticks but has been eating the gerber chicken and gravy but only if he can lick it off of my fingers. He's also been eating some of dry food too. He gets his stitches out on Friday at 11:55am but has to continue his antibiotics until Mon. the 29th. He's also still having some diarrhea so I don't know if the kaopectate is even working at all.

I also have another problem that I forgot to mention. One of my other cats has been throwing up daily ever since Storm's been sick. I've seen Cirrus do it once and so has my roommate so it may only be him but Sunny may be doing it as well. Maybe they can sense my stress. I know that both Sunny and Cirrus tend to eat too fast so this may be the reason. Tonight I tried feeding them much more slowly. I gave them 4 small portions 30 minutes a part. I hope this works because if not then I don't know what to do.

Thanks for caring and for reading this thread. This really means a lot to me.:D

Sunny and Cirrus seem to be doing well with their new feeding schedule. So far as long as I wait about 30 minutes between feedings and only feed them small amounts at a time, there have been no more throw up sessions. I hope this continues. Things are finally looking up in my household.:D

Yogurt - when you're on antibiotics, eat yogurt. Give it to the cats, also. The antibiotics kill both the bad - and good - bacteria. The Lactic Acidophilus in the yogurt, will help prevent that.

I'm back from VSA and Storm now has his stitches out and his e-collar off. He's so much happier and much more comfortable. He was such a good boy in the car and only cried a little bit to and from VSA. It was about 30 minutes both ways. He also waited until he got home to take a big pee in his litter box.:)

The surgeon said that he looks very good and that I should continue the antibiotics even though Storm is still having diarrhea. He'll also need to have another unrinalysis in the future to make sure that his infection is all cleared up. She said that if he has future UTI's that he should be on a different antibiotic that he's less sensitive to so hopefully he won't have diarrhea so badly.

I just need to stick it out until Monday. I decided to keep him in his cage so I can monitor him more closely. He'll hopefully begin to have firmer stools a few days after his meds are stopped. I hope he'll decide to eat more now that he's more comfortable. Thanks again for all of your concerns.:)

I'm sorry that I haven't kept you updated but my computers been acting up again and I've also been very busy.:o I let Storm out of his cage on Friday night and so far so good. He's doing very well.:) Cirrus isn't too thrilled that his big brother is now free but he'll just have to get used to it. This has been the best birthday gift for me.:D My cold is now gone so I'm doing well too.:)

Yeah! What wonderful news that Storm and you are feeling so much better! And if Cirrus is being terrorized again, that is the best sign that Storm is getting back to his old self again - unfortunately for Cirrus though. ;)

When Tubby started licking Peanut again is when I knew he was completely recovered, and I couldn't even yell at him for it. ;) :D
