Since we are having a lot of polls lately and since I work for an ophthalmologist I thought this would be an interesting topic. Though I wear glasses I can get by without them if I have to. How about you?

I wear glasses. I used to wear contacts but then after moving to Arizona I switched because the weather was just too dry.

I wear contacts... gas permable....have worn them since I was in college. I put them in when I get up in the morning and usually wear them until I go to bed. I have glasses, of course, but never feel I can see well with them.

I now wear readers when I have my contacts in and need to see up close...sigh...old age....

I have 20/20 vision with no need of glasses/contacts, so far. I know it will probably change with age though, as it does with most people.

I wear glasses for reading purposes only, but i am long overdue by about 3 years for new ones, my eyesight has deterioted so much, I now have to use a magnifying glass with my glasses to read, being on the computer is hard too, I sit quite close and get sore eyes if I am on here too long, I am long-sighted , which is normal for my age group.

I really want to beable to read books again, so i am hoping to try and afford these new glasses soon. I miss reading.!!!

I am far sighted which means I can't see close. My doctor told me that when I turn 40, my vision would start to go down hill. Well, sure enough, it did! I also have an astigmatism. Because I don't have insurance right now, I just use cheap reading glasses. Without them I can't see ANYTHING!!! I do need to have my eyes checked again because I know my vision has changed alot. It sucks to get old.

I'm near sided, meaning I can't see far away. So I have glasses I only use for school to look at the board, but I don't need to wear them daily.

I have horrible vision.

I wear glasses, but have contacts as well. I went a week with wearing my contacts but couldn't stand them.
I haven't even opened the perscriptions ones, the ones I used were the test ones.

I just can't take poking my eyes, and I have rather small eyes si it's harder to put them it. They're a pain in the butt!!

I don't know how I lived without my glasses. I missed so much about the world it's amazing. People with perfect vision really are lucky.... i'd do anything for perfect vision.

Knock on wood, my vision's excellent! I do need to get reading glasses though, as I'm starting to have trouble reading. I can usually spot a street sign way before my husband even knows there's a sign. No problems with long distance vision, that's for sure. I've heard the comment many times that I've got bionic vision, or Xray vision LOL! I'm getting up there in age though, so don't expect this to last forever.... darn! :D

I have 20/20 vision, with no use or need of glasses and/or contacts. However, both of my parents wear glasses, and didn't need them until their College years.. so, there's still a chance I might need them.

I mostly wear contacts but I have glasses for when I want a break from them.
I am pretty blind. Without my glasses or contacts I can't read what's on the monitor, even if the print is set to large, from a normal distance away.

I much prefer my contacts to glasses. Everything is much clearer and sharper somehow. :)

I wear glasses. I went months without getting them because I was stubborn. :o My correction is like 0.75, I think. I want to get contacts though. lol, my friend passed out when she put her contacts in for the first time!

Same here. One of my trial contacts kept falling out several times a day, so I finally gave up.

I'm near sighted so I have to wear my glasses all the time except when I'm reading. If I wear them then, I get a headache.

Same here, same here! :p

The contacts were so annoying for me. Especially since I couldn't just pop them on and off like I can my glasses when I needed to read something up close. I could hardly use my camera, which was driving me insane!!

They were especially annoying when I was tired and I had to screw with them to take them out.

I'd LOVE to have Lasik but it's too darn expensive.

I've worn glasses since I was 7. Finally in 1998, I got contacts and will NEVER go back!! I hate the feeling of looking thru a fishbowl with glasses. Next appointment, I'm looking into the 24 hr/7 contacts. You don't even have to take them out at night. My co-worker has these and loves them. She has to wear glasses once a month to give her eyes a break, though.

I just went into the dr. a few months ago. I found out I am farsided in one eye. The other eye is perfect. I am not allowed to drive anymore UNLESS I have my glasses on. He said my vision has been bad for a while and was suprised that I never noticed.

I only went in after I couldn't read a road sign even when I was right under it I couldn't make out the letters. During my eye test I thought that a B was a V for some reason and a D was a Q, hubby just kept saying holy crap can't you read? Lol.

Cubby - I'm the same way - except I'm nearsighted in one eye! The differences between my vision in my two eyes is huge. Close right eye, and I can read anything, even small print on far-away things. Close left eye - I can't see the "E" on the chart!

I usually wear one contact lens. Or my glasses if I'm lazy.

I'd love to get Lasik - I'd only have to pay for one eye!! :D :D

Glasses, blind as a bat without em, I want contacts but I cant wear them, I had them for one summer, but they made my eyes bloodshot, and they hurt, so I went back to glasses. but my vision is horrid, my eyes have changed like 2-5 steps every 6 months since 3rd grade, if I take off my glasses while sitting right in front of the computer here I cant make out a single thing.

I am having soo many probnlems with my vision right now. I refuse to drive at night anymore. I'm ony 32 and feel like a little old lady being afraid to drive at night!

I habve just recently gone through a battery of tests - and for the THIRD time since January, I need yet another new eyeglass prescription. UGH. And no, nothing physically is wrong. I've had all the bloodtests and other tests done through the doctor to rule anything healthwise. The eyedoctor swears my eyes are healthy... then why is my vision so screwwy?

Sigh.. sorry to vent!

This year I seem to be using them a lot. :(

I wear glasses. I had contacts and stillwear them ocasionally, but for some reason they seem to make my allergies worse. Also, working ina chemistry lab, I have the fear of getting something in my eye and "melting" the contact. Plus, with regular glasses, i don't have to wear the dorky safety goggles :)

20/20 vision :) I'm lucky I know. I'm glad I don't have to wear glasses. For some reason, I feel physically sick when I wear glasses, not sure why :o I wouldn't mind contacts though, I've worn black ones to a party once and they were pretty cool :D

I used to have 20/20 vision, but since I have been working my eye sight is not as good. I can still go by w/o glasses, but if I need to look at a big screen with words or such, I need my glasses to see. I blame it all on work. ;)

Perfect vision, no need of glasses or contacts. In 1st and 2nd grade, I wore glass because I was far sighted, I believe. I LOVED glasses and thought they were so cool LOL!!! I was such a nerd. :p But they fixed my vision! :D

I have pretty bad vision. I can see things up close just fine but not far away. I wear soft contacts. The funny thing is, I had no idea my vision was that bad until I was 16...passed the driving test just fine, I just couldn't pass the vision test! So I've worn contacts since then, and legally I cannot drive without them.

I had bad vision until LASIK! Best choice I ever made. It worked well for me. Now I am 20/20 in one eye and 20/10 in the other. If you ever decide to get LASIK done, PLEASE research doctors thoroughly before getting it done! More expensive is NOt always better; and the cheapest isn't necessarily better either!

What Slick said!!

I'm totaly blind without my specs - and like Barbara if I go in the sea or a pool - I have to wear them. Apparantly watching me put mascara on is hilarious!!

Whenever I have a general anesthetic I have to ask one of the nurses to be sure and put my specs on as soon as I get in the recovery room - so when I do wake up - I can see!

Blind as a bat here too! I've been like this since I learned how to read when I was little. I wore glasses all my life up until high school, when I got contacts..I love 'em but I still wonder what it's like to be able to wake up in the morning and actually see what time it is on the clock and not have the room be an entire blur.

I wear contacts. I wore glasses in 6th and 7th grade and then got contacts when I was in 8th grade. I still have glasses but rarely wear them.

I was putting my contacts in the other morning and was think about making it a poll here, lol.

I wouldn't be able to see my hand in frount of my face if it wasn't for my contacts!! My contact perscription is - 4.00 for one eye and - 3.75 for the other. They get worse every year, and I go back next month... so I'm sure it will be worse again!!:o

Im stuck with glasses, although Ive gotten so used to them I think I'd flip out if I didn't need them any more! I got glasses when I was 12 when my vision suddenly turned to crap :( I have astigmatisim in one eye and my doctor keeps telling me I have all the signs that I have Glaucoma but I don't actually have it  . They keep doing tests every year and they aren't the most pleasant things in the world. One test they poke your eye with some thingy to get a pressure reading...ugh. And they use these drops that dialate your eyes for about 4 hours (I had a job interview right after my eye appointment once, My eyes were all bloodshot and dialated...needless to say I didn't get the job lol)

Pam
10-21-2004, 10:24 AM
Any time you go for a routine eye exam plan to be dilated. It allows the doctor to exam the back of your eye and is part of a complete exam. Lots of people want to have their exams first thing in the morning and then go into work right after, and we tell them it's not a good idea if they need to see up close for their work.

DJFyrewolf36 you shouldn't be having your eye 'poked' to get a pressure reading. If your pressures are higher than they should be that is probably why they have you coming back. You may have ocular hypertension but that isn't glaucoma. It is something that needs following though.

My pet peeve at work is people who wear contacts and then they rip their last pair and are overdue for an exam and want to come in right away. They usually have no back-up glasses either.

I am also blind as a bat without them to anything more than about five feet away. Like Barbara - I even wear them to swim!!! But, I never wear them at home because I do NOT need them to read or use the computer:) I have bifocals for that but who wants to keep their head tipped bacK? ...Don't want to bother with an extra pair for reading because I can see up close just fine.

I voted for the 20/20 as I do not wear prescription glasses or contacts. But, I do have that "old lady" syndrome of having to hold the page a little further from my face than normal, thus the drug store glasses to magnify things a little bit!!! :o

I am very badly nearsighted, have worn glasses since the summer I turned 9. I have a preety strong astigmatism in each eye, too, though my prescription is very different for each eye. For those of you who don't know, astigmatism is what we usually call "double vision" - but because I have it in both eyes, it's more like triple vision or so. Without glasses, I cannot read anything any further than 4 1/4 inches from my nose. Literally, I just measured. And if you're across the room, not only are you really blurry, but there are 3 or 4 of you overlapping.

I do not get out of bed without putting glasses on.

I was once "lost" at a party on the beach where I left my glasses with my towel, and the current was pretty strong. I was sent back to shore with the bag of crabs we had caught, and others kept swimming.

When I got to shore, I realized I had no idea where I was. Thankfully the beach was empty except for my friends, so I followed the sound of their voices, keeping the water on my left, and just walked down until I could see them reliably. They, of course, could see me the whole time, and had no idea why I was walking so slowly, or that I was lost!

If I knock my glasses of my bureau, I get out of bed gingerly and "pet" the floor methodically until I feel them. Pretty sad!

Before that, I was nearsighted with one eye being -3.0 and the other being -3.5. I absolutely love not wearing contacts and glasses anymore. I know the feeling of having to put your glasses on in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or to even see the alarm clock! Anyone out there considering having it done? I wear glasses for driving (reading street signs etc), but I hate wearing them otherwise. I went to a concert last night and couldn't see the first band very well - all I could tell was that there were 3 people, 1 girl and 2 guys, the girl was blonde and she was wearing a purple t-shirt, and one of the guys had long hair and wore an orange t-shirt. Luckily there was a break between that first band and the person I was there to see, so I was able to get my glasses from the car and I could actually make out her eyes, nose and mouth.

I've had the same lenses for 9 years though, so I'm well overdue for a checkup. I wouldn't be surprised if I needed a different prescription lens. I can see pretty well without glasses though. I am short sighted (myopic).

Getting worse! I can't believe it. I've always had excellent eyesight and I suppose in some irrational corner of my mind, I thought it would always be the same! I'm concious now that I need my eyes tested. I'm finding it almost impossible to focus on very small or faint print in low light levels.

In fact this is a timely reminder to me. I've been meaning to book an eye test for long enough and not done it. I think I'll go and do it right now!

Many years ago I was on a beach in Mexico. I was travelling alone. I too wear prescription sunglasses when in the ocean. I wandered into an undertow. I had to fight VERY hard to escape the undertow. I had to decide which to hold onto....my glasses or my bathing suit. My beach towel was too far away.....I kept my siut, escaped the undertow and my glasses $$$ were sacrificed to the ocean gods....

I would like to have lasik. My biggest concern is going three weeks before without my contacts. I really don't know how to wear glasses!

I also remember her saying that I *could* possibly need bifocals in a few years.

After wearing my glasses for a few months, and the taking them off, I have NO clue how I even was able to walk around my bedroom.

I'd LOVE to have Lasik... we just don't have the money.

My right eye is -4.00 and my left is -4.75 . Once you hit -15 you're declared legally blind. My eyes go down about -1.00 to -1.25 every year, so I'm well on my way lol.
