I'm changing the subject back to something Spencer and I were talking about last week. The "buff colored" cat with the beautiful blue eyes that woke me one morning last week,is still here. Tonight he let me hold him and I realized, he has no claws. I promptly brought him inside and closed him in my office with all of the ammenities and lots of love from my daughter and me. I have been so worried about the cold weather and had made him a warm bed outside in a sheltered area and, yes, of course I had started feeding him. I am still worried about the reaction of my 2 dogs (they won't hurt him, but they're big and excited), and also Mimi, who as I have said before, is totally frustrated by other cats. I'll keep him separated and get him to the vet tomorrow. Hopefully, I can either find his owner (which I haven't had success with so far with signs and checking lost/found in newspaper) or find a new home where he can stay indoors all the time. I think the back claws are intact, but none on the front. Maybe he just escaped from someone's home...he wears no collar. Since Mimi is an indoor/outdoor cat, I think it would be hard for me to keep this one from going outside with her.
I'm just rambling along here. Just wanted to let you know what was going on with "Butter" aka Butterscotch Pudding.

I'm amending this post to tell you that he has his claws....found out the hard way. He must not put them out all that often, but I definitely have the wounds to prove he has them tonight! He is completetely comfortable with both dogs now and Mimi, but Mimi is NOT comfortable with him. At least she is inside now.

Here are Helen's webcam pictures of Butter so you can see what he looks like. Thanks again, Paul. I think he's our cat now. Hopefully Mimi can stand him. Maybe her old age has mellowed her out a little....we'll see about that. Didn't get that lovely striped tail, but you'll get the picture(s) anyway.

Logan....Butter is beautiful!! He looks well fed so I would think that at some point he was well taken care of. Also since he willingly came inside and actually let you hold him he definitely has "people skills." http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif It looks to me, at this point, like you are the owner of one fine cat!! Oops, excuse me, TWO fine cats (don't want to upset Mimi! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif Best of luck with this sweetie and keep us posted on him as he settles in.

I'm figuring that since he is asleep in the bed with Helen, Honey and Lilly tonight, Mimi better just get used to it. He has had a wonderful day and it looks like he will become the "token male" in this family. We are all girls, except for Butter! Isn't he beautiful? I guess I have a soft heart for those baby blue eyes or something. Please say a prayer for Mimi. Surely she will come around and end up loving her new friend.

Congrats on your new baby! Butter is such an appropriate name. He's beautiful. I have a friend who has to give up his cat because he's taking a job that involves a lot of travel. I'm considering taking his cat in....I don't know... two dogs, a hamster, fish...My next pet was suppose to be a bird. You inspire me http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Butter is so fat and pretty! Can you say pretty to a boy kitty? He looks like some kind of a red colorpoint with his tabby marks on his face, ears, and feet (and unseen ringed tail) and his blue eyes. Mimi will almost ceratinly get used to him in time, especially since she is used to sharing her home already. Even if they never become friends, they usually settle in to at least peacefully co-existing after awhile. He's such a cutie, good luck with him!

Genia,
You know, Misery loves company. Get the cat! We have two rather large dogs, now two cats, two hamsters and three hermit crabs. And my daughter asks for more all the time!!!! I thought I was at my limit until Butter came along. Taking in a cat is easier than another dog (which I considered when I found a stray a couple of months ago). Thank goodness that black giant found a good home with one of my friends.

Logan,

I am in awe that that gorgous boy was not spoken for! Who could not LOVE a cat like that? He's stunning, absolutely stunning! He's so perfect, and those eyes...like fine gems. Sincere congrats to you, Helen, the other fur family, and most of all congrats to Butter, for he has really struck gold with your family.

Spencer,
I'm glad you finally posted! I was dying for you to see a picture of this beauty. He must of been on his own for a while because he is so hungry! And his fur doesn't look that good up close, plus I feel scabs like he's been fighting. I'm sure Dr. Robinson will fix him up on Monday. I think if we've seen the worst from Mimi, I'll plan to keep him. He just walked right in that door and made himself comfortable like he belongs here. Of course Helen thinks he does! Neutering will be the first order of business if it hasn't been done yet. I sure don't know how to tell. If anyone can tell me without having to get too graphic, I'd appreciate it.
Butter is sunning himself on the front porch right now and Mimi and Honey are in the backyard sunning. Of course, Lilly is right here at my feet, her favorite place!
I'll keep you posted.

See, Logan!! You did it again!!!! That is why I love you so much!! You have a heart of gold!!! and hey, it's hard to say no to my sweet Helen!!! Your home is so loving and nurturing and comfy and homey, who would want to leave?? I may never leave once I get there!!! Butter is beautiful!! I love his eyes! They are very mesmerizing!! I know diddly about cats, but Spencer's advise seems perfect. Poor Mimi, she's still the queen no matter what! Dr Robinson should name a wing of the hospital after you!!! Thanks for telling me about your new adventure!!! You are my hero! I told you that you were awesome!!!!! xoxox

Don't know if any of you remember a commercial about the "Kool Aid Mom" from a few years ago. She was the mom where all of the kids would congregate (supposedly because of the Kool Aid). I would like to nominate Logan as the "Lost/Stray/Heart of Gold/Mom." Logan, it looks like all of the pets in South Carolina have your number!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif Thanks for being so big-hearted.

It's because I'm the biggest sucker on the street! Most of my neighbors are retired and all act like grandparents to Helen, but are past their petloving years!! They just all laugh at me. In fact, sadly enough, Helen and I lost our good buddy, Frank, from across the street this morning. He died and I am looking for the strength to tell her about it tonight. Please pray for all of us. He was jogging and died of a massive heart attack. The positive is that he never suffered. Sorry to digress, it's just on my heart tonight and I've learned to share that stuff with all of you.
I'll keep you updated on Butter and the rest of us, but wanted to also let you know that Mimi jumped in my lap tonight and went to sleep for the first time in two days. I dared not move or disturb her. She's getting there, slowly, but surely.
Thanks to you all for being such good friends.
Your friend with a heavy heart tonight....
Logan

Logan, we'll certainly remember that prayer tonight. Several years back one of my elderly neighbors died of a heart attack also. My daughter was very close to this couple as her real grandparents live 1 hr. away and I often thought of them as "stand-in" grandparents. It was very hard relating/explaining his death to her. Hope you find the words for Helen. It is VERY hard! Also, I am a little jealous of your favored pet status! I have only ever had ONE stray in my back yard. It was a very obviously pregnant female cat and she wouldn't stay. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif I would have loved to play "Mama" to her babies. Anyway, we'll all be thinking of you and praying you will find the right words for Helen.

Thanks for you kind words. We made it through last night and Helen finally slept after shedding a lot of tears. It's so scary for a little girl when someone close to her dies. We've had too much of that lately. Anyway, Butter and the rest of the gang are doing fine. Even Mimi is coming around, slowly, but surely. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Logan, I'm so sorry about your friend, I to have had the unfortunate task of telling my daughter of the death of a good friend. I will say a prayer for you all. I hope things continue to work out for your family. I agree with everyone else. You have a heart of gold. I still thinking about taking my friend's cat. I'll let you know what I decide.

Logan, please accept my condolences on the loss of your freind and neighbor, Frank. I will have you and Helen in my prayers, along with Frank's family.

Back to lighter subject matter-

Needless to say, your vet will easily be able to tell if Butter is neutered - unlike girl pets it's real obvious since everything is external in boys - if he has not been neutered his um, "jewels" http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif will be just under his poo-poo http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif and about the size of two large marbles. If he has been neutered, it will appear that he has nothing under his tail, or at best two small folds of skin between his wee-wee http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif and his poo-poo. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif Did I say that delicately enough? http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif I'm glad Mimi is starting to revert to her old self - I was hoping she wouldn't run that beautiful boy off.

lhg0962
01-06-2001, 09:58 PM
Well, the verdict is that Butter is all intact!!! Not for long. We'll arrange for that on Monday when he visits the vet. I have not had a male cat since I was a little girl (he lived 18 years, but came to us when I was seven). Anyway, a cat loving lady was visiting with the wife of the man who died and she confirmed that he is still "all man". Poor Butter....he doesn't know what's getting ready to happen to him. He and Mimi have had a pretty good day today. Only fought each other once. For six pounds, she's pretty good at holding her own. Both of them got pretty new collars today (with bells) and they look so handsome! Too bad they don't like each other enough for me to get them together for a picture. Maybe one day! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Well, if Butter is still "all man" that means his past owners clearly did not have his, or society's, best interests at heart, which means they did not deserve that beautiful boy. It's clearly fate that he appeared at your house, where he would be responsibly cared for and loved properly. Where he deserves to be! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

OH PAM!!! I will have nightmares tonight about all those baby Butters (sounds better if you say Butter babies)running around!!!! He has stayed in the house all day today, but he is "catting" around now as is Mimi! I feel they are much safer outside at night, if they insist. Hopefully they'll come in shortly, before he has time to get in any trouble that way. It will end tomorrow!!!! I need them to spread the word that no more need to come here. I won't be able to afford them!!!

Butter is spending the day with Dr. Robinson. He will be a "changed" man when he comes home tonight. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif Poor Butter! I tried to explain it to him...for him to live with me, this has to happen. They will wait and draw the blood to test for feline leukemia when he is asleep. He was actually very well behaved. Dr. R just started shaking his head when he realized I had another stray! He believes that Butter is anywhere from 2-4 years old. He weighed in at 10 pounds, a nice size.
He will be pampered when he comes home, which of course means everyone else will be too so they won't get jealous!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Spencer,
I actually live in a quiet, downtown neighborhood. Butter is only my third stray (2 cats, 1 dog), but all within the last 4 months or so. Thomas, the other cat, obviously had a home. He just came to eat, but hasn't been around in over a month. He was very healthy and I never had him here long enough to even take him to the vet. He would literally show up twice a day. It's just the joke of the neighborhood that if there is a hungry animal, they're going to come here. Of course we've had the rats, possums, turtles and other creatures that Honey has cornered in the backyard, but I only saved the possum and turtle by getting them out of the fenced yard.
I definitely have reached my limitations and if more come, we will have to find homes for them. Butter is the only keeper. Dexter, the puppy, was going to be far too large (80-100 pounts) to try and keep with the two large dogs I already had. He's so happy with his owner that I know I did the right thing by him.
I'm glad for all of the info everyone has shared about finding homes and in fact, did some investigation with the Humane Society over the weekend and learned more about their policies. Unfortunately, like everywhere, they are overcrowded and have a difficult time financially. We are going to try to help out as volunteers and provide donations of food, newspapers, etc. They do not have a formal fostering program. Maybe we can help in that regard (at least helping to get one set up). I'll keep you posted on that as time goes by.

Butter's home! He is quite pitiful, but ok. Checked out fine on all of his bloodwork and he can no longer contribute to the overly populated cat world. He is comfortably sleeping in my office, under the desk, door is closed, and no one is going to bother him.
Thanks for all the advice guys, and by the way I want to tell you how special my veterinarian is. He only charged me for the vaccinations, no charge for the surgery or anesthesia. His contribution to the welfare of Butter! He also handed me a full bottle of that medication Lilly takes for her hips and said we would just call ourselves even. That medication costs $3/day and he gave me a huge bottle. He knows I'll always come there and he takes good care of my children. He knows I'm a softie for these babies when they are sick or needy. But, I swear I'm finished!!!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

What a wonderful vet! Years ago, when I had my first apartment, I found a beautiful grey female cat. She used to hang out in the parking lot of my building. I asked my landlord if I could keep her and she said yes, with the promise that I would have her spayed. She recommended a vet. When I took the cat (I named her Suzy) to the vet I found out she was pregnant. I kept her of course. She gave birth to four kittens. Friends took two kittens, my sister-in-law took one (she named him Mop because of his wild hair) and I kept the runt and named him Tigger because of his stripes. He was so small and it didn't take long for me to figure out something was wrong. I took him to the vet and after an exam the vet found out he had an enlarged heart. He told me the chances for his survival were slim, but I wanted to try anyway. We tried so hard. I had to give him medication every three hours. When I had to work I had friends who would stay with him to ensure he would get his medication and the proper care. Little Tigger didn't make it. The vet told me that because we tried when most people would have given up, all of his care was free. This was a man who truly cared about animals. Isn't it wonderful when you meet someone like that? Suzy has passed on but I will always remember that wonderful man and my friends who tried so hard to save Tigger.

Genia,
What special people you and your vet are for doing everything possible to save Tigger. At least he felt all the love you could give him. I had a Tigger for 18 years growing up. He was a holy terror for the first few years of his life, but a very special cat.

On the subject of Butter...his hair will grow back, right??? I feel so sorry for him, but he is feeling much better today!!

hey Spencer and Pam. Thanks for the reassurance. I guess they just cut the hair in the back and he looks all "exposed". But he's ok and VERY loving, which surprises me a little. All the girls have been very curious about him, but have used good manners all day and left him alone for the most part. He's eating well and walking around the house, using the litter box, even Mimi's http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif, and she didn't fuss.

Logan: Bless you for helping out at your local private shelter, and bless you for considering assisting them in starting a fostering program. And bless your vet for helping out the helpers! Butter's hair will grow back, it takes 3-6 weeks. Since he is a colorpoint, don't be surprised if it grows back darker, especially since it's winter. Some vets do clip for a neuter, just as a precaution, or if the cat has long or unruly fur.

Logan, I'm glad Butter is doing okay. Since you mentioned shaving, I have to tell you this. In 1992 we adopted a cat from the shelter. He was about 8-10 years old and was so beautiful I couldn't resist. Our vet said he was part Persian because of his distintive tail. We named him Michelangleo (my daughter was a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Fan). Mike didn't like to be touched. When he wanted, he would jump into our laps, but he didn't like to be petted. One day I smelled poop. I checked the soles of my shoes and didn't see anything so I searched the house. No poop. About two days later Mike jumped on my lap and I almost gagged. I lifted his tail and saw poop matted into his fur. I tried to wash it. I couldn't because he wouldn't allow it so I took him to our vet. They couldn't remove it by washing so they shaved his bottom. Poor thing had to walk around with a little pink bottom. He hated it! I couldn't help but laugh. Of course Mike paid me back by peeing on my shoes. His hair eventually grew back and he was once more his stunning former self. Butter will grow his hair back. He's a lucky fellow to have found your home. I just wish him good luck with all those girls http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/wink.gif

Oooh, Genia. What a story!!! Poor baby. I've heard of that happening with those long haired cats. Mimi has never had that problem, thank goodness!!
Butter is doing great. He ventured outdoors this morning and of course I worried the whole time that me might be so mad at me that he wouldn't come back. He did! Found him lying under the heating vent as usual.
He's now asleep on my bed. He seems to have found his home with us.
So glad Rachelle found us too!! She and I had a nice chat, with Carrie, late yesterday afternoon.
Thanks to everyone for all your good wishes and concern. Butter is now a member of the family and even Mimi seems to have accepted that!

Well, Logan, I have to agree with everyone else, that Butter is a beauty. Don't care if we're not supposed to call the boys "pretty", I do it anyway. I'm really glad he has the loving temperament as many (here come the emails) Orientals can be a bit, shall we say, bossy/cranky/vocal/.....BRATTY! Sounds like this was a "meant to be" thing since Mimi and the canine ladies have accepted him so well.

I do have to comment on the "no more" thing you said on page 1 -- never say never -- especially if you're thinking of helping out at the local shelter. I didn't exactly do that, but because of the adoption groups that came into PetsMart (and my kids, who also fell victim), at one point in time I had 7 dogs and 4 cats in a city house. So be careful what you wish for....

I honestly believe the pets (especially taken in wanderers) leave road signs like those old Burma Shave signs out

If you need a place to stay

Follow my trail and down the way

You will see a lovely home

Stick around, you'll stop your roam

She's soft of heart and easily swayed

Just drop on by, you'll be glad you stayed

AT LOGAN'S HOUSE! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

P.S. Really sorry to hear about your neighbor. My condolences to you and his family.

Ktreva, what a poet you are!!! I'm going to have to print that one off and post it on the refrigerator to remind me of what I said!!! Probably somewhere on this site, I said I wouldn't have more pets, even before Butter showed up!!! And what did I do, added another! At least I don't have a husband to leave me over it! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
This has been a fun discussion for me! I'm glad we've made a new record on the cat board. Plus, I got to share pictures of my kids for the first time. That's always fun!
Speaking of Butter, he doesn't act like he feels good. He is eating, but otherwise is sleeping all the time and doesn't even try to go outside. How long should he be feeling poorly? Maybe he's just so happy to have a warm house and good food to eat that he is content right here. He's letting me get closer to him now and I realized that he probably had been sleeping in a car engine because he has black grease all in his tail. Poor baby. If you have any thoughts on his recuperation period, I'd like to know about it. He looks like he is healing fine and doesn't have any of the signs the vet warned me to watch for like bleeding, swelling, etc.

No expert by far, but Mike did the same thing when we adopted and had him nutered. He slept all day and we would only see him when he ate or went to the litter box. There were times when we had to look for him. He was always in a closet or under a bed. I don't know how long Mike had been in the streets before he was picked up by animal control but he had a hard time adjusting. After a while he would come out of hiding and sleep on the couch. He started going to the door at night wanting to be let outside. 5AM sharp (when I wake) he was in the garage waiting for me to open the door. As I said earlier he never liked to be touched but he had such a personality. You could definitely tell when he was pleased and displeased. I believe he had such a hard life before. I was just happy I could offer him a safe environment for the last 6 years of his life. Remember a lot has happened to Butter in just a few weeks. He probably just needs to adjust to his environment.

Logan, when my Andy was neutered he spent the first few days in the basement more or less by himself curled up on an old bean bag chair. I think he just wanted to be away from the "stresses" of everyday life until he was himself again. Hope Butter will soon be perking up a little. I know it will make you feel better once he comes around a little.

I definitely think Butter is not feeling well. He just has no energy. I called the vet yesterday and they told me to give him until Monday and if he isn't better to bring him in. He has a little crud around his nose which worries me a little bit too. He is lying outside in the flowerbed today. It's a very warm, sunny day. Just want him to get better soon. Hey Spencer and everyone.
Just thought I'd let you know that Butter woke me up with a big MEOOOOOOWWWWW this morning at 7 (of course I could have slept a little later today). He was hungry and ready to go outside. That's the first time in several days that I have heard that loud Siamese cry. He looks 100% better today, much more interested in what is going on around him and those blue eyes are definitely brighter. And for the first time, he is actually asleep on the floor in the living room, next to both dogs. Looks like he is healing and happy! Thanks for bearing with me while I was so worried. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif

Well, my son has had a three day weekend and has dominated the puter, so I'm weighing in too late to reassure you that it's not unusual for a kitty to take up to a week to snap back after a surgery, no matter how minor. But I'm glad to also see he's doing better, even though I knew he would!

You should know that Butter has fit right in with this family. Once he got his strength back, and confidence up, he has been nothing but fun for us (plus a little painful, with those claws). His favorite thing to do is to bat at Lilly and Honey's tails which wag quite often! Plus, chasing Mimi is a good pasttime too. She only tolerates a little and then she chases him.
Mimi's real revenge is to eat Butter's food! She is injesting much more now, which won't hurt her, as she is quite small.
Butter seems to be a typical, young male cat, with lots of energy. He loves to climb trees, but also loves to lie on the bed and snooze.
I have had two people offer to take him, but I'm attached now, so he's ours.
Since Mimi has never really been a "playing" cat, Butter is hilarious to me. Reminds me of the male cat I had growing up. Hides and leaps out to grab me when I walk by, sticks his paws under a closed door for attention, etc. So much fun!!!! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Good for Butter! It makes you wonder what kind of people could let such a personality go. I'm glad he's now where he belongs. And I'm glad Mimi's learned how to handle him!

Two rescue posts with good news! First I read that Earl has been adopted, then to hear how well Butter is adapting is just fantastic!. I'm glad things are going well in "Mother Logan's" household. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif
