I went to my cousin's 100 acre farm in Morehead, KY for the Labor Day holiday. She breeds Kentucky Mountain horses. I have to say, she's an even bigger animal lover than me! She's in school for it (I forget what her degree program is called), and has lots of pets of her own! I thought I'd share a few pictures from this weekend. I have never seen so many different types of animals in one day - unless I went to a zoo!

So here's some pictures!
First, the dogs.

Rachel is a friend's dog (not my cousin's!!) who obviously has a thyroid problem. Have you ever seen a bigger black lab in your life?? Sweet dog though.

Finally, Queen of the Farm, Xena, my cousin's beautiful pit bull. She's six years old. I love this dog so much. She's so sweet!

In the barn, still begging to be played with. She'd play 24 hours a day if she could!

Kitties and lizards in next post...

Kitties!!

Itsy Bitsy, the three-legged wonder. Itsy Bitsy is quite accident prone. Falling out of the loft in the barn, getting into fights...who knows. She broke two of her legs on two separate occasions, and the third time she broke one so bad it had to be amputated. It's her back left leg, and she gets around great without it! However, Itsy Bitsy is purely indoors now. She's SO sweet!! She never left my side the entire time I was indoors. Loves attention.

"Pet me!!"

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/pccb038b6dc62c81ccbcdeb37a55e8fd6/f71a609e.jpg
"Meow, pet me!!"

Scallycat, the newest addition, is a four month old male. He has tons of fun stalking bugs, frogs, and butterflies in the fields.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/paaaad505ae0e797d425b8bc48fa851ce/f71a4930.jpg
Here, he rests up with a quick snooze on the porch.

Darby is a long haired wonder. At least 15 pounds, my cousin's not sure if he's Norwegian Forest Cat or what, but he's huge!!
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/p0c15a51bcab5798ccc160ed164165dda/f7220a47.jpg

Here's Tuff, a lack and white, relaxing on the porch. I love his face colorings!
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/p32d31bfc6b65072c3f7d6bb6705a4c7f/f71a44ad.jpg

Finally, my cousin has five tiny "skink" lizards. You can't tell in the pictures but they have bright blue tails. They're one month old. My cousin hatched them from eggs she found in the barn (probably growing on horse poo or something)!

Here's Lucy, a mule my cousin rescued. She was abused, then put up for auction when she could no longer work. She's in great health now, and is getting used to people again. She currently lives at a friend's farm.

A peacock we saw wandering around in the middle of the road...
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/p87cdc507ac3a4d736a52747e33512b7a/f71a4af9.jpg

We saw this huge bull wandering around on the open road. As we drove by it, it jumped into the barbed wire next to the road, and I managed to get a picture at that exact moment. He managed to untangle himself in a few seconds, though, and was eventually caught by his owner and put back in his pasture.

And finally, a view of my cousin's back property, taken while standing on the back porch, which is basically everything you see in the picture.

I'm working on getting two videos (one of Xena and one of Itsy Bitsy) done tonight!

Hope you enjoyed ;) You can see the full album here. (http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=3953345093)

I would love to live there, it's beautiful. I like Lucy.

The Blue tailed skinks (if they are the same as we have in Florida) are poisonous. They effect the nervous system of animals who catch them. That's what happened to my cat Roxy.

lizzielou742
09-07-2004, 09:17 PM
KBlaix - I didn't know they were poisonous!!  Good thing she keeps them in an aquarium. I'll have to ask her about that.

Oh yeah, and I said it wrong. The breed of horse she breeds is the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse. If anyone is ever interested in one, PM me. ;) :) Aren't the foals beautiful? And can you believe the size of that black lab?

I tell you all what, I was in heaven all weekend. I grew up going to that place as a little kid, riding ponies while my little brother hopped on the back of their Great Dane. The house they have there was built in the 1840s. It's a log cabin. It needs a big overhaul in terms of floors and ceilings, but it's really neat. :D

Yeah well you notice, he's got a lead rope on...my cousin is just out of the picture holding it! ;) He's really a sweet horse though, I wasn't afraid he would throw me or anything, just afraid I would fall off b/c I hadn't ridden bareback in so long! :D If I did fall though, good thing he's only like 15 hands! :)

It is such a beautiful farm with so many wonderful animals.
I'm jealous, I spent Monday at my friend's farm but she only had 3 horses, 2 dogs, a few cats and a rabbit.
Just a smaller piece of heaven compared to your cousin's farm.;)

I am so jealous! You are very lucky to have a cousin that loves animals like that. I've never heard of a Kentucky Mountain horse before. Are they gaited horses? Love all the pics. Thanks for sharing.

lizzielou742
09-08-2004, 12:44 PM
Yes they're gaited. They call them "soft-gaited," which I guess means they have three gaits: a trail walk, the canter and a saddle gait. They're very nice to ride. You can read more about them here (http://www.kmsha.com/). I think they look a lot like the Rocky Mountain Horse.

Here's that picture of Beauty:

Wow! The horse featured on the main page of the site is gorgeous! Eli's Chocolate Diva. Going to have to do a search on her. Even the name is great. If I could afford more than one horse, I would love to have one. Are they very expensive?

I don't really think so, guess it depends on bloodlines and age and training. I think it varies. I know Spook (the grey) is for sale, asking price I BELIEVE around $2,200 and he's a fully broken gelding. But I'd think mares would be more expensive...check out this link for more. http://www.naturalgait.com/classifieds.html

I think your cousin's place would be the ideal Pet Talker's holiday resort- of course I loved especially the kitties but all the other animals as well. I had never seen that tiny skinks:D
