Here is a copy of my "haiku" from Poetry.com. Anyone else care to share? Lines are 5-7-5 syllables.

Sunny humid day,
Chunky cat in window lies
Soaking up cool air.

He lays, paw over nose
Ginger and white deceiver
Plush-coated devil.

Eyes ebb open, pupils
huge and black, he stirs, rises.
McCavity's kin.

Loving, kissy cat
When life goes your way, my boy,
You are still a clutz.

Tease the dog, big boy,
Swat at her and run away
She puts you in place.

Snuggle up with me
He says, climbing in my lap
Oozing fur all over.

Sorry about the title of the post, all, I didn't mean to hit that "y".

For Pippin (and Lady):

No yellow cat here!
No hulking polydactyl
Just myst'ry gold fur

Company's coming
Better coat that dark couch well
Then hide: What kitty?

When will that foolish
Young pup stop bugging me? Hiss!
It's afraid of me!

One day I will teach it
That these paws have many claws ...
Maybe tomorrow ...

Karen: Those are wonderful!! Do you just whip this stuff up or have you been writing poetry on the side? Is there anything you can do about the topic title? I didn't mean to mess it up. Thanks.

Afraid I just "whip that stuff up" as I have always written poetry to inflict on my friends!

One cool windowsill
Waiting - mama's coming home
Perk at car wheel sounds

Human dinner time
Crowded around a table
Busy eating sounds

I show no intrigue
My eyes slowly creeping shut
Crouching like the sphynx

Nothing else matters
Until tell-tale signs begin
That scraps maybe soon

Dinner plates are cleared
Knives and forks start to clatter
My "food-scrap alarm"

Asleep to alert
Wakeup with a Witch-cat stretch
My treat must be next

Walking half asleep
Head to where the tid-bits rest
I will get the best

What! Just bones and fat!
You know I expect better!
(Cat leaves in disgust)

A bush in the house!
Balls and lights swing and dangle
What am I to do?

Humans will be mad
Sparkles and twinkles call me
I am very weak

Maybe bat just one?
What fun this bush is for me
Oops! down from the branch

I cannot stop now
A pretty one up higher
Wow that bush does sway

Helpless to stop now
Totally out of control
Sorry human friend

My conscience speaks "no"
"Cat, quit while you are ahead"
Crash! I'm good as dead!

Great poems, everyone. Technically, haiku is one verse of 5-7-5 syllables, but I hope the oriental societies where it originated will forgive us going overboard (don't all petlovers?). It makes an interesting way to think about your pets and try to capture something special about them in one (or two, or....) verse(s).

Crazy cat, can't be helped
Mind as splotchy as her coat
She's a calico.

Pam: I really loved yours -- especially at this time of year. The "bush" concept is great. Maybe if we all get together and publish a book we could donate the proceeds to a rescue group or two. Maybe one for cats and one for dogs??? Ooops, almost forgot the other pets, too, I'm sorry. Okay, THREE rescue groups -- whatcha think?

Ktreva it sounds like a wonderful idea to me. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif There is a lot of talent here at Pet Talk. I am amazed by all of the wonderful, caring people and all of the wisdom and ideas that are shared!

Here is my first try at Haiku:

My name is Freckles
A cat of many colors
Black; white, brown, equal.

One small cat, curled tight
Into a heart's warm corner
There forever more

So, how do we organize a book? There's a site that does ebooks, I don't recall the name just off-hand but we'll need to vote on charitable organizations to support. These are really some great haiku. What shall we title the book? Is everyone really interested in doing one?

...can't promise any creative talent but I'd give it a bash - you can count me in.

the poop scoopin' boogie
(apologies to brooks and dunn!)

in the back of my house, near the wall that's made of rocks
sits my cat's favorite place, his kitty litter box.
the cat starts poopin' every night when the sun goes down
it's got litter, clay, pee pee and poop
it's where all the cat folk go to do the poop scoopin' boogie

i've got a good job i work hard for my money
when it's quittin' time i hit the door runnin'
i fire up my pickup truck and let the horses run
i go flyin' down that highway to that hideaway
stuck back in that room, to do the poop scoopin' boogie

RICHARD

the kitty goes, i get home to do the poop scoopin'
fill the sack, toss it out back, i think i'm gonna boogie
oh get down, turn around, go to town, do the poop
scoopin boogie

the kitty asks me, 'say dad i smell no pee!"
i just cleaned your mess, kitty, just leave me be!"
i used hot water, bleach, and set it aside to dry!
i see abbys, long hairs, tuxies and strays
they just eat all day
so we can do the poop scoopin' boogie

(sung to the tune of Boot Scootin' Boogie by Brooks and Dunn)
