Well he LOOKS like a boy now. I can't *confirm* it though, but that's what it seems like, with how much his face has brightened up. He is BEAUTIFUL!!! You need to post pics of little Charlie more often!!!

Awww, Charlie's GORGEOUS!! I always thought he was a male. :p

He he, I love his little stub. Piper used to wreck his tail too. He's not as clumsy as he was when he was younger, but he still has his moments. ;)

CUTE pictures!

Yeah, Charlie is really clumsy... I don't know if you can tell, but one feather on each wing has grown back (one of the clipped ones, I think)...

Is that normal? Or is my birdie... strange? Lol

Charlie is darling! Looks like he has his little chest quite puffed out - birdy bosom! Sorry Charlie....if you are male. ;)

He is adorable! I'm not sure how you're supposed to be 100% sure, either, of what they are (until they lay eggs, hehehe).

i have herd of soo many different ways to sex tiels!!
1: males have a larger and brighter orange cheek.
2: males have a larger mohalk
3: they have to be genetically tested to know for sure
4: males are prettier then females...

and soo many more...

So yeah I have no clue how to know...

It depends on the color mutation of the tiel. Because Charlie's a normal grey cockatiel, the brightness of the yellow on his face is a sign that he's a boy. When he was a baby, the color on his face was dull. Because it brightened up, I think he's a male. If it remained dull, that is a sign that he would be a she.

My Muffin has a bright yellow face, and she is a female, but she's a pearl cockatiel, and with her coloring, there is a different way to tell the gender. Pearl cockatiels have white/yellow spots/markings all over their back and wings. For pearls, males lose those markings after maturity, but females keep them. So female pearl cockatiels are brighter than male pearl cockatiels, but male normal grey cockatiels are brighter than female normal grey cockatiels. It is different with every different color mutation. Another way to tell is that if the bird is very vocal, it is normally, but not always, a male. Females tend to be more on the quiet side.

It is so hard to tell! When we got Roger, he had all the signs of being a boy, and for sure, he is! When we got Milly, she was called "Willy" and they swore "she" was a male. Well, we know for sure that she is no male Cockatiel, since she lays eggs and we hatched 3!!!

The babies were a bit tougher and we don't know for sure, but one way to tell is by their tail feathers. The females tend to have "bars" on their tail feathers (the underside). When I took my babies to the vet, he thought that two of the three were females, for sure. Those are the two that found a new home last week. Their "cheeks" were definitely more dull than their brother, Bennie, and he looks exactly like his dad, Roger, which pretty much tells me that he is definitely a boy. Without DNA testing, I guess you don't ever really know until there are eggs and babies like we got! :o

He he! We've never gotten them DNA tested, and we've never gotten eggs and babies, but I'm positive about their genders. You can just tell, by observing their behavior. Males tend to act so different from females. When Popcorn started attempting to mate with Muffin, that only proved to me that I was right. He wouldn't do that to her if he wasn't male, and Muffin wouldn't respond in the way she did, if she wasn't female. :o The wierd thing is, they hardly ever mate, but when they get in the *mood*, once a year, you can totally tell who's the girl and who's the boy!

And yes, females have barring under their tails too, which Muffin has and Popcorn doesn't! :D
