In a message from Pet Talk's "Cat Behavior" section, you can discover how Burrl used to be Purrl... Later down on the board, it was suggested that "name origins" might be a good topic for a new thread, so here it is!

My two cats are both solid black with gold eyes. There is two years' difference in their ages. They are completely different with respect to size, body type, fur texture, and temperament.

When the older of my cats was rescued as a tiny kitten, I knew I was in trouble because I'd been considering getting a black cat. I have navy-blue furniture, and got this brilliant idea that a camoflague effect would happen, yeah right. I had been catless for a few years following the cancer death of the most wonderful cat EVER, who had owned me through junior high, high school, college, and my first job. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif His name was Huckle, after the Richard Scarry character in children's books. So I was ready for a new companion.

A stray mama cat had this litter of three kittens in someone's garage during cold, rainy weather. (The other two were yellow tabby.) That homeowner was cat-phobic, freaked out--[insert long story here]--so my co-worker Jo Ann ended up rescuing the whole family, some from the gutter and the black one from the TRASH. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif The tiny kittens, eyes still closed, and the mama cat lived in Jo Ann's house until the kittens were old enough to be on their own. I knew I'd be getting the black one, and I looked up a lot of possible names related to color, but then one day, the perfect name popped into my head. His original "home life" was unbearable, and he was taken in by a loving family until he could be adopted out, so I named him Foster. He's turned out to be a hulking, beautiful, panther-looking cat who could be the poster child for the saying "nervous as a cat." If he sits on my lap, it's a rare occasion and on HIS terms. He will "sit up" for a snack. He loves boxes (see the Pet Talk "Cat Games" section). http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/cool.gif

A couple of years later, another co-worker was leaving her driveway when she saw that her cat-hating big dog had treed a kitten and intended to kill it. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/eek.gif She managed to rescue him, and brought him to the office until she could figure out his next step (she's highly allergic, plus has the anti-cat dog). One look at this kitty and Jo Ann made a beeline for my office: "I've found the perfect 'little brother' for Foster!" I managed to resist all day (apartment lease says 1 pet max.), but then at 3:30 or so, I said "Well, I can just go SEE him." And that was the end of that. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/rolleyes.gif He'd been starving alone in the woods for who knows how long, had almost killed by a dog that morning, had been in a cardboard box all day. You would expect that he would hide, be afraid, etc. But not this one! As soon as I lifted up the box flap to say "hi" he started PURRING. So, I ended up naming him Evinrude, after the brand name of those boat motors. He has such a great personality--an outgoing, unflappable snuggler. He has an unusual voice (see the Feline Linguistics topic in Pet Talk's "Cat Behavior" section). http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif

Other cats in the family past/present:
* Linus was my sister's cat when we were kids. He was yellow. The baby-name book said that Linus meant "flaxen-haired" so that was close enough for us. (Huckle and Linus were brothers.)
* Twinkle was named after a character on Speed Racer, I believe.
* My niece now has a cat they named Annie because she'd been orphaned.
* My mom adopted a cat who came already named Emily. I took a while for Daddy to get it right and quit calling her "Evelyn."

I'd love to hear other cat-name stories!

I have 4 cats. The older 2 (14 and 13 years old) are named Misty and Foggy. Can you guess why? Yes, they are both completely grey http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif. Of the younger 2, Jet (age 5) is the only one whose name stays with the color theme. He is of course completely black. He also has to be one of the friendliest cats around! My other guy is 5 year old Jasper (AKA: Sir Jasper Purralot). He is a grey, taupe and white tabby and he got his name just because I liked Jasper. He also purrs almost non stop http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/smile.gif!

Pieper's Mom

Pieper Erin is a pint-sized black ASH--with some Bombay mixed in I think--she has those "bald" spots beneath her ears...ANYWAY, the name just came to me...she has always been shy and so ladylike...someone told me that in Dutch, Pieper means "lurking" (this was after she had been named for about a year) ... and she certainly does that as she checks out what's going on before committing herself.

My black and white tuxedo with the five digit front feet was named AllicaT (Allica-T) because she was a fiesty, huge round ball of a cat...her manners could have used some improvement...I got her and Pieper at almost the same time and I used to say that Pieper was Princess Grace to Allie's Eliza Dootlittle! Hence the alley cat reference seemed perfect.

My Mom named her Maine Coon Charlie Four Paws -- Charlie after her boyfriend and Four Paws after the groomer...

I have two "little hooligans"; Jimi Paige is a 15 month old DSH. She weighs about 17 lbs.(She's daddy's big girl.) http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/redface.gif Her name was a compromise between my boyfriend and I.He wanted to name her Jimi after his favorite song by the Dave Matthews Band, but I added the Paige b/c I thought she should have a "girlie" sounding name! After which my boyfriend told me that there is some rock guitarist named Jimmy Page,so people always ask about her name. But it suits her well, even if she won't answer to it! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif My baby is named David Barkley. But we just call him Barkley! He is a 9 month old foundling cat! He is a DSH and weighs in at a slim 7 lbs. He is a "momma's boy" all the way!! He is also an ear sucker! His name was all my fault. He is named after Dave Matthews and David Duchovny (X-files),and the Barkley is for my favorite Sesame Street character,Barkley is the BIG shaggy dog! (I'm a private nanny just in case you are wondering why a 25 yr old woman is still watching Sesame Street! http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif)

Lucinda - your story is really something! I too rescued 2 kittens - at separate times. My youngest girl (turning 1 next week!!) is all black with eyes similar to pickle slices! I thought long and hard for a good name for her. I finally decided on Pekoe - as she was the color of black/brown tea leaves at the time I adopted her. My other kitty was rescued from a bush. I came across a lady who was gathering up her cat's kittens to take them to the pound the next day. I "picked" a little black kitten from the litter, so I named her Daisy. She was like a beautiful wild flower that I picked on the way home from work! That little flower is now 1 and is over 10 pounds and she is such a peach! I think the names of our cats really say a lot about the history of the kitty and their personality in general! Of course, as cat people, we never call our kitties by their "real" name - instead we use any of the 1,000 nicknames we have for them!

My cat's name is Glacier. No she isn't she white. As a matter of fact she's black! I don't know why I named her that but it fits. I named my grandma's cat (1 of them) Coal. He is white. Another one is socks. She is gray with white paws. A calico is Medusa. She was her first cat and is mighty and strong. She recently died http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/frown.gif. Another is Scruffy. She is brown and scruffy. I haven't named the four kittens yet.

Names are fun. We always wait till a name picks our cats. We had Blackie Boogens for 3 weeks before his name jumped up. A lady was being forced to move to where no pets were allowed. She had a momma cat and 4 wee kittens that she was going to have put down! Well a group of us went to work to find homes for all in the 6hours we had before doom. Well we found a place to put the momma and babies who went on to live with other caring families. But as I was leaving for work this women walked up with a wee black kitty saying you all forgot this one..do you want it or what! OH MY a missed kitty. Well I snatched the cat from her cruel hands and took it to work with me. Later when we tried to put it with its siblings MOMMA Cat would have nothing to do with it! So I took it home with me...its eyes were still blue and it needed its but wiped just to go potty. Well we perservered and soon this poor kitty was running around happy as could be...but it sure needed a name, we tryed lots on but none seemed to fit. This poor kitty really liked to jump out and grab at you from any convienant hiding place. One night we were flipping tru TV channels and a Scary Movie caught our eye. The movie was called THE BOOGENS! and we giggled each time the monster reached out from a hiding place to grab a victim...it sure reminded us of that poor kitty. Later that evening that poor kitty Jump out from behind the chair and snatched my leg. My husband just laughed and laughed saying "the booogens the boogens...he got you!" well the black little kitty became "BLACKIE BOOGENS" from that day on and he lived with us for 10 years .... now he's in heaven probably being a boogens and jumping out from behind clouds to swat at angel wings and halos...LOL

Truckngranny - How did you come up with the name "Lucky"? I, too, had a cat named Lucky who wasn't so lucky. He was very ill and last Aug. I had to put him to sleep. He was a black cat who seemed to have the "black cat" luck. Everytime I hear the name Lucky, I think of him. I hope your Lucky's surgery goes well. Keep us informed!

The funniest cat name I ever heard was from a friend of my sister-in-law's who was a chemist at Alcon Labs. Her cat's name was pH because he was just your basic cat. http://PetoftheDay.com/talk/biggrin.gif!
