With only a few days away, the Olympics are about to start, just wondered who is going to watch them and if anyone is actually going to attend them.

I am not a real sports fan, but I always enjoy watching the Olympics, especially swimming, athletics, gymnastics, rowing, what are your favourite events?

I hope we see some lovely pics of Greece as well, This is one of the places in the world I would love to visit oneday, it looks so beautiful.

Look out for a few kiwis in there won't you, our medal prospects are not great, like the big US OF A, but we will give it a damn good try. Watch out for us in the rowing, twin sisters from my City, YOU GO GIRLS!!!!.

So please post your thoughts and hopes for the games.

My biggest hope is for them to be free of any violence and threats.

I probably will watch the gymnastics, and thats about it. My husband is a 7-8th grade social studies teacher and he has a few weeks of lesson plans around the Olympics (Anyone who's a teacher and would like REALLY cool lesson plans, PM me :D ) He'll be watching them all, and taping all the ceremonies for his students to watch.

As long as they (as in hubby and the kids) don't do what they did during the last Olympics, which was camp out in our bedroom and watch the games alllll night looong. I couldn't get ANY sleep because of the cheering! :D A girl needs her beauty rest ya know! :p

For me it's two weeks of sports heaven...

The only things I don't really watch are the commercials.

A few years ago the networks were charging for coverage. This year 7 networks are going to televise some 1120 hours of events.

So much sports, So little time!:D

Sports? Blarg. I might try to catch Fencing, but that's all that interests me, and it's not nearly as much fun to watch as it is to do, so....I probably won't. :)

And I bought the extra coverage!

I'll watch a lot of the sporting events - not so much of the upclose and personal stuff.

I'll try to watch. I usually enjoy the Olympics but I love the winter sports more than the summer.

This year will be bittersweet because of my mom. She absolutely loved the Olympics and attended several of the events in Atlanta in 1996. It will be painfully obvious that she's not here when all the excitement begins and my phone isn't ringing off the wall.:(

Nope, won't watch a single minute of it. In fact, it irks me that it interrupts anything else that I may care to watch.

I hear ya, we only have 4 tv channels in NZ, and one is totally the olympics from 7.30 on and it is my favourite channel , so for two weeks I will have to miss out on my best shows, GRR..., oh well like I said I don't mind some coverage, BTW Richard that boxer of ours will be there, the one who murdered his child, yes he got to go, GRR.......

Now if it were the cat olympics all eyes would be glued right.

Jazzcat my heart goes out to you, I know that there will be so many memories of times spent with your mother, and I understand how painful it will be for you, just want you to know I am thinking of you, and sorry if I stirred up your emotions regarding this thread, HUGS.

That's how I felt this past February when Westminster started. My Dad and I always talked when it was on and ohed and ahed over the dogs, or I went to his house and we watched together at least one night. :(

Watch it anyway, she'll be there in spirit with you. :) We need a teary eyed smilie on PT.

I love the Olympics, summer or winter!! I will definitely be watching!!!! :D :D :D

I am so happy that a couple of you have such great memories of watching the Olympics with your parents. I have the same memories as you do and I will always treasure them. I hope (and secretly know) that my daughter will remember my love for the Olympics. When she was just a small girl, I spent what was a lot of money at the time, to buy a small television for my bedroom, so I could watch the winter Olympics from my bed as my apartment was so terribly cold!!! LOL!!!!! Still have the tv and still have the memory of that time. :)

I am a big fan of the Olympics...although I too prefer Winter. But I never miss the opening ceremony....at least the parade of nations and the lighting of the torch.

It will be the first time I have had the tv on since my husband went to SoCal in May!

I always watch the Olympics. I like the Winter Games best, but I like the Summer Games almost as much. :) It revives my patriotism and piques my competitiveness.

The darling of the Games this year seems to be Michael Phelps, the swimmer, who is from very nearby to me. They're saying he has a good chance of beating Mark Spitz's records from Munich!

I'm not much of a sports fan but I do watch some of the Summer Olympics.

Jazzcat, sorry it's going to be such somber event for you. Maybe I could come over and we could have a BBQ and sit around and talk about pets and things. :)

Thank you all so much. I didn't mean to be such a downer on this thread and I fully intend to watch knowing Mom would want me too for her.

Slick, I like the BBQ ideal too!! Maybe a green slushi would help things, even though I'm not a drinker, LOL.;)

If you all know what Athens has done to it's stray dogs in preparation for the Olympics....
Animal Rights groups are asking us not to watch. There is a video but we are waiting for Karen's approval to post it as it is a bit graphic (it doesn't show the actual poisoning of the 1,500 dogs but some of how the dogs are affected by the poison before death, and the cannabalism even before they bother with dealing with the problem- nothinig graphic- I promise!) I just thought everyone knew? David Letterman has talked about it so I figured it was all over the news but apperantly not...

Yes Leslie this is absolutely disgusting, what can we do about it though, is there any website or something where we can register a protest against this barbaric incident.

do you want me to send you the video? I only watched it once because it took my computer 45 minutes to download- there maybe something there regarding what you are requesting! I am annoyed that it is coming around so LATE! Hello! How about before the games start? geesh...

I absolutely LOVE THE OLYMPICS. I plan on watching as much as I can.

Even though I fully accept that it is important to know how Greece is handling their overpopulation of stray dogs............and it will be broadcast around the world...........how many other countries, including our own have a severe overpopulation problem? Will those countries be scrutinized?

I hate to just pick on Greece when we should look right in our own backyard and take a look and learn. Nowhere is it a pretty sight!

I wish all of the athletes God Speed -- Safety -- the ability to do their personal best.

I happen to know personally an American who will be in Greece, but will present himself as an Irishman..................as he attends various committees and meetings.

It is a sad world we live in right now.

I read horror stories every day about some atrocity in this country and others at mistreatment of animals. I am not interested in seeing that video, Leslie, personally, but I have read about the problem in Greece. It all sickens me, and if humans could be more responsible across the globe, this wouldn't have to happen. :(

But in reality, those athletes didn't have anything to do with the Greek government's decision, so I plan to support them by watching and enjoying.

I couldn't agree with you more--to me, the Olympics are just boring. There are a few things I'll watch, if I'm bored, but otherwise I don't watch them.

I remember sitting down with my dad and watching the 68 Games. He was very proud that his home country was able to host such a huge event. Even tho there was quite a bit of controversy on the planet at that time, everyone was able to take two weeks to forget about the problems...until those two yo-yos decided to bring politics into the mix and onto the medal stand....

I digress...

It's a couple of weeks to watch ordinary people do extraordinary things. They jump farther, move faster, pull a little more out of a tired or hurt body, then shine for a few minutes on the world's stage.

It's the Jamaican bobsled team, Gabriele Andersen-Scheiss, Eddie the Eagle, Ben Johnson, Jeff Blatnick and some people that you will see, forget their names, but remember them for what they did and didn't do.

I spent two weeks in 1984 having the time of my life here in Los Angeles......And it's fun to relive some of that with the other cities that have had the chance to step up and have the world watching.

It's a little more than sports-

It's the people.

I always had hard time reading my dad's feelings.
In 96 I packed his a$$ up and we went to watch the torch pass thru on it's way to Atlanta...We parked in the lot of a restaurant and waited for about two hours...

When the time came and the motorcade was passing he spot where we were, out of he corner of my eye I saw my dad stand up and begin to applaud as the
procession made it's way up the street.

My dad was a good natured and very reserved man, not lent to spontaeous shows of emotion, but I was very thankful that a flame, on it's way to a sporting event, gave me a glimpse into that private side of my dad.

Jazz,
Sit down and enjoy the Games.

I'm sure your mom won't mind you jumping up and down and screaming your head off. I get the feeling she would do the same thing.
;)

Richard, that moment with your dad was very special. :) In 1996, I had just moved to Greenville and the Olympics were held in Atlanta. I didn't get to attend any of the events in person, but the torch came through our town and it was a very special moment. We are about 2 hours NE of Atlanta. I got chills and tears as the former mayor of our city, who was nearing 80 years old at the time, came through with the torch. It was a very exciting moment! And the weekend after the Olympics ended, my friend and I went to Atlanta and experienced some of the excitment by visiting Centennial Park and some of the special places and activities that had popped up as a result. It was so much fun.

Thanks David, I think we kiwis will need all the extra support we can muster up, we don't do too bad for a small country, but those Aussies always beat us, mind you they are huge in comparison as is the US of A, lot more people to choose from, their is a guy in the olympics with my surname, he is no relative that we know of, But I am sure he is related somewhere a long the line, well I would like to think so, especially if he wins us a medal lol.

I will be watching it on the giant screen so it will be awesome, David at least you will have something besides soaps to watch in the hospital, and something you will enjoy, yes look out for the kiwis won't you mate.

Leslie thanks for sending me the link, but unfortunately it would not work, not sure I would like to look at a video, however as by chance I got this in my inbox today, anyone who wants to send a protest to the prime minister of Greece, go to this website., THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES, on there is an article addressing this and an email address of the prime minister that you can send you letter, I would love to see all of PT members get together on this and send an email, it might not be much , but it is the best one can do.

As much as I am horrified at this, I do have to agree with you Logan.

We watch it as much as possible - without cable to satellite TV. Regular TV only shows so much, so that's all we get to see. However, we're really devastated! We'll be camping this weekend and we can't get the regular channel 5. We do have satellite TV in the motorhome, but it just so happens the site we have has a big ol' tree right in the path of the satellite so it doesn't work. :( Therefore, no olympics for us until we get home Sunday night. :(

Terry is always so funny. After watching, say, the gymnastics and seeing somebody do something really incredible - like those multiple flips, cartwheels, jumps and then a flip backwards for good measure - he's always like "That's nothing, even I could do that." I'm like "yeah, right." :D :D

LOLOLOLOLOL,

That's rule number 4 in the chapter headed "How to impress your Significant Other".

Rule 5 states...

When asked to perform the manuever you just saw claim a:

A) war injury
B) football injury
C) motorcycle accident injury
D) not enough space in the room
or
E) "Are you crazy? You know that was a long time ago!!"

Yep, I'll be watching faithfully-one nice thing about not having to get up early the next day..
I concur, Richard, it's about amazing, dedicated atheletes from all over the world and politics should be left out of it, cause it sucks when someone uses the podium as a sounding board for their opinion. I clearly remember the incident you mentioned. I can't wait to see the Iraqui wrestling team do their thing with the freedom of knowing they won't be sent to the Saddam School of Torture for losing. Of course I always root for the home team, but regardless, when you excel, you excel.

I think the italians creamed us in the Basketball, and what about the swimming , south africa winning over Aussie and you guys, that takes some doing, very strong contenders, but I am sure they will both make a great comeback in the water, the Americans and the Aussie's always do so well.

Hah!!! Finally something that's in my time zone (well, almost); I don't need to stay up all night to watch.

And - finally a gold medal for Germany!!! :D

I just checked out that website Kirsten posted - I never knew sports like judo, table tennis, badminton and sailing were Olympics sports! What's handball? Personally I loooove watching gymnastics. I wish I was that skinny!!!

I've decided that the worst part of being in a very different time zone from where the Olympics take place is that the news of the day's results travels very quickly due to the internet! I didn't want to know about the results of the big swim event between Ian Thorpe and Michael Phelps until I watched tonight, but I'll be darned if it wasn't glaring me in the face on the MSN homepage a little while ago!!!!

Team handball isn't the bounce off the wall kind of ball!

It's a across between hockey and basketball.

It's two teams that play on a court with two nets as the goals.
The object is to advance the ball by running or passing it up court.

I have been watching the swimming this morning, one of my favourite events, China is doing very well in the pool, as is USA and Aussie not as good as usual, mind you I have only seen a few races, I don't think NZ is very strong in this department, can't see any medal prospects this year there.

I was mistaken Italy did not actually cream us in the Basketball, the final score was very close, but USA you creamed us for sure, that would have been the game you watched David.

I can't wait for the cycling, not the road race, but the other, I find this very exciting, probably the most exciting event for me to watch.

Yeah Kirsten, gold for your country , well done, which event was that in,? I missed it.

Lizzielou, watch out for NZ in the sailing, we do quite well here, and the rowing, fingers crossed.

Grrrr .... I'd LOVE to watch the Olympics, however stupid NBC cut their local broadcasting in San Francisco and all I get is snow on Channel 11. I live in a very old Victorian with no cable access. The local NBC people don't seem to think a large metropolitan area like San Francisco is important enough and have done nothing to help us get better reception. I tried watching the other night -- very snowy bicycling .... but I'll keep trying. Some nights it's not too bad.

The first 6 channels of our cable really suck and, of course, channel 4 is where all the action is...I took a look at the hookup from the pole and fixed it!!!

For one day....I recently found out that our cable company installed new wires EXCEPT the cables into the houses....

Wait until they find out that I am going to satellite....

Carole,

Isn't velodrome racing a kick in the head???
I watched some of the rowing on friday and saturday night...names please???

I wouldn't mind taking home an Olympic athlete.....;)

Logan,
I turn off all the TV and radio, It's just like the World Cup.....I was up at 3:30 a.m. watching soccer..Oops! FOOTBALL......

Ah yes Richard that was the name I was looking for, I really find the velodrome cycling sooo....exciting, especially if our guy's are in it, I remember when we had the commonwealth games here in auckland, I just about screamed the house down.

Here are some of our people to look out for Richard, twin sisters from my city, Caroline and Georgina Evers-swindell,( our medal hopefuls) single sculler Sonia Waddell, also from my City, and women's pair Juliette Haigh and Nicky Coles. look out for Barbara Kendall in the sailing, she has won us medals before.

I just watched the basketball last night with NZ playing China, I was outraged at the stupid Ref, he let China off with at least two fouls, one this guy just deliberately pushed our guy in the chest to the floor, he was mad we got a goal, this kind of thing really is so unfair, I don't know why the rules are not obeyed. SUCKS!!, yes we lost, but it was an exciting and close game, and I am not being a sore loser, a foul is a foul and that is that don't you think?

Oh well onwards and upwards, the Kiwis are not fairing too well in these olympics so far, our medal prospects are fading....sob...sob, now one gold would be nice.!! lol:)

Excellent Kirsten, I think this is the worst NZ has ever done, we have yet to get a medal, fingers crossed, I watched the womens weight-lifting, it was great to watch, but if those women are not on steroids I will eat my hat, some of them have very little femininity at all., still they are awesome to watch.

Kirsten

Yeah, many of these women are looking like guys indeed, and I'm sure a lot of them are on steroids.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the kiwis! :)
