Okay, i'm having some huge difficultings teaching Elvis to "stay" I have him on his leash, and make him sit. I hold my hand out to his face and i keep repeating stay, ect. but for a few secongs he follows me, and I just repeat it. it isn't going anywhere. He keeps doing the same thing! and we've been practicing it for awhile now.

Any tips?

Place the dog in a sit

Put your hand in front of their face and say "Stay!"

Don't move. Just stand beside them. Repeat until you feel the dog understands.

Do the same thing except take a step out and turn to face the dog (right in front of the dog, not allowing them to walk forward). Repeat as necessary.

Keep doing the same thing, adding only a foot at a time. I find it much more important to have a dog do a solid 5 minute sit/stay with me 6 feet away than having a dog do a 20 second sit/stay with me 50 feet away. Everytime the dog budges, place them back in the same position. Don't let them get away with inching forward.

I did this with my dogs. I also said "no" everytime they budged. Some do, some don't. It's without a doubt, the most solid command they know.
