Here's a thread where we can all learn something new. I was wondering what slogan is on your license plate. New Jersey is the "Garden State" (you just can't find a better tomato than a Jersey tomato! ;) ) and Pennsylvania, where I am originally from, is the "Keystone State." I thought this would be a fun thread since there are so many states represented here. How about it, what's on your license plate? :)

Maryland doesn't put anything besides the name and the MD shield on ours - the original one anyway. There is the "Treasure the Chesapeake" one and the agriculture one that says something about farming... but that's it. MD plates are lame.

kentucky is "The Bluegrass State." This is what Kentucky's license plate looks like. It's actually caused a lot of people to complain, because some people find the slogan and smiley face kinda lame. I don't really care either way.

Ohio used to say "The Heart of it All" but for a few years we have these new bicentennial plates that say "Birthplace of Aviation":D (Wright brothers and all that) We had to turn in our Texas plates that we had all our lives and they had the slogan "The Lonestar State" http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/sirrahbed/sad-smiley-046.gif

Liz- I love the special Ky spay & neuter plates!

I'm not really sure, but I think we have "Land of Lincoln" on our plates....or maybe we used to. They changed them recently and I know what they look like, but I couldn't tell you what they say. Funny how you see them ALL the time but don't really look at them.

I LOVE those Animal Friendly plates. Illinois had one they called Pet Friendly....until a company called Pet Friendly decided to sue and try and get some money out of Illinois for using "their" name. Evidently the whole thing still isn't settled because we still can't get pet friendly plates. I want one. Why don't they (Illinois) just use Animal Friendly like the other states. Sometimes the politics of Illinois and Chicago just really irks me.

Indiana's are boring and ugly (they are just flat boards... no pressed letters/numbers) with no slogan. They do have a TON of specialized plates, though. The most common one is a nature one or something.

Ontario's is "Yours to Discover" There are 4 letters on the left and 3 numbers on the right, and there is a crown in the middle seperating them.

Missouri is the "Show Me" state as in "I'm from Missouri so you have to show me." (little over used if ya live here)

Our are white at the top and fades to green at the bottom. We have Missouri in blue and underlined with a green squiggle and Show Me State at the bottom in blue.

:D North Carolina and Ohio (Birthplace of Aviation) seem to have a fight in who claims the Wright Brothers!! We have Wright Patterson AFB and lots of streets named after them. I will have to look that up because I think they came from one state but actually flew in another:rolleyes:

OK here is the deal with the KY plates.

The old plates (not the ones before the happy face, but actually two plates ago) looked like this:

http://www.geocities.com/heritagecustomprinting/1988-98_VVL772.jpg

My favorite Kentucky plate ever, with the twin spires of Churchill Downs and the mare and foal running in the middle.

What happened was that a German photographer, Peter Thomann, sued the state for copyright infringement, saying that the image on the plates was similar to his photograph, 1963's Stute mit Fohlen or Mare and Foal, seen here:
http://www.tfaoi.com/mi/mi176.jpg

Which actually, only the Kentucky Horse Park has permission to use, in their logo (seen here, sorry image is so small):
http://dev2.kyfairexpo.org/images/logos/horse_park_logo.GIF

Kentucky changed the plates shortly after all this came up. :D

Lots of people have been putting stickers over the smiley faces (whom the state is calling "Mr. Smiley" ). I could post some of them here but not all are safe for the young'ns!!!! Many people have argues issuing a lame standard issue plate is just a ploy to get people to pay more for the special plates, ones that look more normal (spay/neuter, horse council, nature, what-have-you) and I agree. Very sneaky!!!

So there you go. Now you know more that you ever wanted to about Kentucky license plates.

I have always LOVED these ones. I wish my dad got the Yosemite one when he got our new car, but he didn't. There's also one that has California on the top, and says *The Golden State* at the bottom. I don't think I saw that in the list though. Most license plates around here are the plain white ones, that just say *California* at the top. I haven't seen many others on cars.

Hawaii's says "ALOHA STATE." They've used this rainbow design since 1991.

From 1981-1990 Hawaii plates featured a Hawaiian warrior...

From 1976-1980 Hawaii plates included a hibiscus in the upper right corner and a Hawaiian warrior with Diamond Head and palm trees in the background...

That is funny! Here in Ohio, they act like we own them! I mean, Wright Patterson AFB, lots of streets named after them and our plates claim "Birthplace of Aviation". At the base, one whole area is called "Kittyhawk". So, I have just thought everything Weright Brothers and aviation happened HERE.
I did a bit of research last night and learned that the brothers DID come from Dayton and had a cycle shop but the made a glider that they experimented with and had two crashes at Kittyhawk, NC. They came back to Dayton and perfected a gas powered airplane and Ohio claims they has their first "successful" and controlled flight over Huffman Prairie which is a landmark here in Fairborn. Kinda funny that both states try to claim them!
I am not from Ohio though, so I think it is funny:p

I don't think we try to own them I think we just try to own the fact that the first flight actually took place here...I don't care either way although I am from here.....but yea its pretty interesting to learn two states fighting over them I never knew that:o :D
