I thought it would be fun to bring back "horse trivia". I did one a long time ago in Pet General and it went pretty good. I thought I would put it in "general" because more people look in "general" than "pet general" I've noticed. The last thread I think was almost 50 pages!! Wonder if we can beat that!?!?

It's pretty basic...post a question dealing with horse breeds, horse care, etc. A person will try to answer the question, if they get it correct it is their turn to post a question, if they are wrong than other people can have a chance to answer it.

Sound fun!? Ok..let's start! :D

1) A pot belly, weight loss, and a thick curly coat that refuses to shed is a sign of what?

G.P.girl
07-16-2004, 09:36 PM

BTW i LOVE your sig! it's so cool!!!!

Desert Arabian

boscibo
07-18-2004, 02:28 PM

Name 6 different Western events.

Desert Arabian
07-18-2004, 04:18 PM

trail riding

I hope those are ok, I will post a question right away since you said you will be away for a while.

True or False: A mule can reproduce.

slleipnir
07-18-2004, 05:42 PM
False

boscibo
07-18-2004, 06:46 PM
I'm not YLL, but you're right, mules cannot reproduce. I think there are some very rare cases of it, but I am not sure of the validity of those claims.

I have a tough question: What color is sometimes claimed to be a real horse color, but in reality no horse has ever been proven to actually be this color?

Desert Arabian
07-18-2004, 07:14 PM
Yep, they can't reproduce.

Answer: White/Albino!?!? *bites fingernails*

boscibo
07-18-2004, 07:20 PM
Yes! I thought that one would be harder.

Slleipnir, I will pass my question on to you. You post a question instead since you answered first.

I am suprised more horse lovers like CountryCowgirl, cocker_luva, etc haven't stopped by. I wonder why?

slleipnir
07-18-2004, 10:39 PM
Thanks, YLL, but you can go, that's fine. It's too late here so I don't feel like thinking of a question so youmight as well go.

Desert Arabian
07-18-2004, 10:44 PM
Are you sure!? :p Hmm, I need to think of one too.....
....
......
.......

Yep, those are good! Other questions I have on my question list:

Why are you selling the horse?
What's the horses temperment?
What's the horse like in traffic?
Does it load, clip, bathe, and stand good for farrier and vet?
Has it ever been shown before?
What's she like in heat (if it's a mare)?

There are tons and tons and tons of questions you could ask.
:p :p

Here is a Morgan history question...

Name the person who started the Morgan Horse breed.
Name the original horse that started the breed.
How old did that horse live to be?

Oh man, I read that Margurite Henry book too, a looong time ago.

slleipnir
07-21-2004, 06:47 PM

Vermontcat

Between the three of you, you got all the answers right!:)
Justin Morgan was the man, he called his horse Figure and Little Bub was a nickname too.
Figure's name was changed to Justin Morgan after the death of Justin Morgan the man. The horse lived to be 32.
Boscibo answered first but Slleipnir got all 3 answers right so I guess one of you should go next.

Desert Arabian
07-22-2004, 11:05 PM
How do teeth tell a horses age?

G.P.girl
07-22-2004, 11:06 PM
they get longer and stick farther out. also, there's this black spot on the top of one and you can tell by the shape of it

cocker_luva
07-22-2004, 11:09 PM
yep

Desert Arabian
07-22-2004, 11:20 PM
Can you be more specific? There are certain shapes in the teeth, what are they called? At what age do the shapes appear? Sorry, I should have been more in-depth above.

There's a lot to telling age by teeth ;)

slleipnir
07-23-2004, 10:19 AM
Permanent teeth, cups (like the older they are, they're smooth out..hope that made sense..), angle, shape of the teeth (I mean like weared or aged..)..hm I think some teeth conditions too...

I don't really know..

G.P.girl
07-23-2004, 10:26 AM
oh sorry,
you can see the infundibulim (sp??) spot on the teeth when horses are about 6, and you can just barely see the end of it when they're 10. the Galvayne's groove (also known as pulp cavity i think) appears when the horse is 8 it's black and it starts out as a tiny dot and it gets bigger as the horse gets older. the incisor teeth get worn down and it shows a different cross section, but that onllly works up til the horse is 8. after that, the horse is considered aged.

Desert Arabian
07-23-2004, 01:26 PM
Slleipnir, yep that's really good. G.P Girl, yours is too! I think G.P Girl has the right of way to post a question, since she answered first.

Stars and cups are the shapes that appear in horses teeth. At age 10 horses will start to get their Galvayne's groove, which general disappears at age 30. At age 12, some horses get wolf teeth. At age 5 the horse should have oval teeth with a large cup, at age 10 the tooth turns round and gets a star along with an enamel spot. When a horse is 15 the teeth are triangular and can have a small enamel dot. By age 20 their teeth are biangular and have a star. There is also a hook that appears on top inscisor 2 at age seven, is gone by age 9, and reappears at age 11.

I had to learn a lot about teeth and aging for camp, I had to help age 48 horses, that was a lot of work and a lot of confusion.

There is a lot more to it than what you see here, but it would require me to type a post that would take an hour, there is so much to learn. :o

I'll post a question.

What 2 animals are bred together to make a mule?
What is a Hinny?
Can you breed a mule? Why?

Desert Arabian
07-24-2004, 09:57 PM
Major mule fan here...I can answer that. :D

female horse/male donkey makes a mule
male horse/ female donkey makes a hinny
Mules cannot reproduce because their chromosomes make them fertile, I am having a brainfart and can't remember exactly what it is. Ack! Brain don't poop out on me now!

Vermontcat
07-25-2004, 07:04 AM
YLL, you're right.
The last part is that most mules are sterile or infertile so they can't reproduce.

At a horse show yesterday there were two mules in the western classes.
One of them must have had an Appaloosa as a mother because it has Appaloosa markings.
I'm not sure if I got a photo of them but I can try again today when I go back there.

Your turn YLL.:)

Desert Arabian
07-25-2004, 01:54 PM
Aww, that's awesome! I can't wait until the mule fest in Missouri in September! There was a gorgeous appy mule there too, it was the most beautiful mule I have ever seen- I will try to dig up a picture and post it.

Describe Strangles (what is it, what does it to do the horse, what are the signs of strangles, etc.)

In Memory of Rocky the mustang & Jumbo the lippazaner- who died from strangles. :(

slleipnir
07-28-2004, 09:14 PM
An infectious disease. Pus discharges from nose and swells lymph glands by the jaw.It can give them fever and they could stop eatting and stuff..It's not usually fatal.....

Desert Arabian
07-28-2004, 09:26 PM
Yep. Your turn! :D

Just want to add:

It can be very fatal to horses, because the lymph nodes can get so large that they "strangle" (hense the name) and suffocate the horse by pressing on the pharynx. It can also spread down to the thorax and abdomen, and when the lymph nodes burst, the horses can die. Strangles is EXTREMELY contageous to other horses, if one horse has it, the whole herd will get it if the infected horse is not isolated and treated.

slleipnir
07-28-2004, 09:37 PM
Sorry I can't think of good questions..I g2g to bed now so I'll only be on for a few mins..

What is Stringhalt? Symptoms? Causes?

Desert Arabian
07-28-2004, 11:37 PM
Stringhalt is an over flexation in the hock, the cause is unknown but it is thought to be caused by deteriorating nerves. When they walk they jerk their leg up really hard, sometimes kicking their belly.

slleipnir
07-29-2004, 04:21 AM
Yup :)

Desert Arabian
07-29-2004, 10:31 PM
Sorry it took me forever to respond, some one should have taken my place!

Hmm, on the topic of health issues....

What's CID? What breed gets it? What does it do to the foal?

Desert Arabian
07-30-2004, 03:39 PM
Come on! I know someone out there knows what CID is! :p

slleipnir
07-30-2004, 04:02 PM
Combinded Immunde Deficiency? Arabians get it. Not really sure what it does actually o_O It's some type of infection I guess that kills them

Desert Arabian
07-30-2004, 04:48 PM
Yep, it occurs in Arabian and Half-Arabian foals. There are a shortage of lymphocytes (sp!?) in the blood, which basically shuts down their immune system and they do not respond to vaccines/immunizations. The foals get really ill, mainly with pneumonia, the foals dont survive.

:(

Your turn!! :D

name all the colors of the american quarter horse, catergorize dilutes & dense colors :-)

Desert Arabian
08-01-2004, 11:57 PM
There are 3 basic colors: Black, Chestnut, and Bay. Of course there are different variations of chestnut like liver chestnut, sorrel and variations of bay like sandy bay, bright bay, and blood bay. Dun, cream, grulla, palomino, dapple, buckskin, cremello, and perlino are dilute colors. Patters can be overo, tobiano, tovero, sabino, rabicano, and many appy patterns (blanket, leopard, etc).

Desert Arabian

Eh, I don't care for cremellos too much. :p :o

Um, let's see, a question...or dear...all I have are easy ones! :p

What's a Welara, Quarab, Morab, and Pintabian?

cocker_luva
08-02-2004, 01:59 PM
well im not sure what a Welara is, but im gonna guess a Welsh Pony/Arabian

Quarter Horse + Arabian = Quarab
Morgan + Arabian = Morab
Pinto + Arabian = Pintabian

all are crossbreeds of arabian.

just a guess :)

slleipnir

Fine..I don't have horse books here (not home) so the only thing I can think of (although its easy) is

What is colic? Signs? Treatment? Anything else..lol-is going to bed-

Snuggles
08-08-2004, 10:26 PM
well i dont know how to describe it in horse terms, but its like a twisted gut thing from bad feed/hay or like ingesting too much sand & stuff where they like wanna roll, or do roll, i dont know the treatment of past walking them out. :(

Desert Arabian
08-08-2004, 10:29 PM
In severe cases surgery is needed to untwist the guts. Cribbing too much can also cause colic, that happened to Jailrock at camp.

slleipnir
08-09-2004, 07:28 AM
